About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 1400 – The Perfect Storm Of Anniversaries

First, Bret and I have been married for 1400 days! Sweetness!!

Second, today is our 47 month anniversary!

Third, it’s our 200 week anniversary!

Now, before you think I’m some crazy married person (I mean, I am….but it’s explainable crazy ;))…I will tell Bret happy anniversary some Saturdays (not as much as I used to) since it’s another full week of marriage. Sometimes I’ll say happy anniversary on the 11th of the month as well.

So there you go! :0) Actually, it’s one of our “secrets,” I think, to celebrate even the little things in our marriage. Heck, you could say happy anniversary EVERY day of being married…because it’s one more day you worked at it and carried on.

Day 1399 – A New Era Of Life = New Goals

Over the last few weeks, a lot has changed…mostly that we are out of debt and I feel a freedom like I’ve never had before. I won’t say that I’ve been lazy, because I don’t think I have been. I think there is something to enjoying the fruit of your labor. I spent many years working two jobs, many days working 15-20 hours, many sleepless nights, much worrying. It was the busiest March and April I’ve EVER had…two jobs or not. So I don’t exactly feel bad about taking “off” as much as I have. I have spent some of the time thinking about my business…what can I do differently? How should I adjust my prices to be more profitable? How can I present myself in person and on the web so that I bring in THE perfect clients for us? All in all, it’s like a new era in my life. Not only in my business but also in my health.

Bret started his own personal training business in January of this year. There have been aspects that have been a little bit of a struggle…mostly the fact that I have to actually get off my butt and workout as well as not chow down on junk food….or at least workout enough to burn off said junk food.

I said I would share tips here and there. Well, today I’m sharing a tip and some big goals!

I want to run more. Running has always been a struggle for me. Mostly getting into a routine and increasing my mileage. I’ve done 2 Susan G. Komen 5k’s….but those almost don’t count because there are so many people…it’s just different. I’ve also done a mud run…also, doesn’t really count. I’ve never really been “trained” when I did said 5k’s. I don’t have a burning desire to do a race…though, I have a small bucket list, “maybe-I’ll-do-this-someday” feeling towards running a marathon. Mostly just to say that I’ve done it. Bottom line, I just want to increase my mileage…whether I do a race or not. SO! I’m attempting the 10% increase per week rule. If I stick with this, I’ll be up to marathon mileage by the end of the year. But seriously folks, if I can run 5 miles or even a 10k, I think I’ll be pretty happy. I’m going to run 3 times a week, starting with 1 mile. I did that this week AND I’m very happy with my times each run. That’s goal #1.

I also want to do body weight/free weight workouts. I’m starting with 10 minutes a day 3 times a week and increasing 1 minute a week. I’ll mostly be doing workouts from Pinterest and some routines Bret is using with his clients….which, HOLY COW is he tough on his clients! I did HALF of a workout and was sore for 3 days! Yikes! That’s goal #2.

So there you go. I’m putting my goals out there. Keep me in check if you want. I want you to also notice that I’m only working out 10-13 minutes per day. YOU can work out, even if you start small. No excuses.

Day 1398 – Bret’s Birthday Celebration!!

Today is my dear husband’s birthday! Last night at 12:01, I told him happy birthday and said, welcome to the last year of your 20’s! His face was priceless. 😉

I didn’t share this yet…but on Tuesday, I gave a short photography presentation to a girl scout troop! I will say that it gave me a HUGE amount of respect for Bret and teaching AND planning! Wow! I probably spend 5+ hours for twenty minute presentation. But it went awesome! They were very sweet and gave me a card AND a gift card as a thank you! TOTALLY unexpected but SO appreciated! It was to Padonia Station! Which, you know is one of our fav places to go! I was just so blessed at the timing! I wasn’t sure where I’d take Bret for his birthday…but this was my answer!

Here’s what we ended up getting!!!

Day 1396 – Honoring My Husband

I had a great time at the beach this weekend, but I did miss my dear Bret! I’ve been thinking over the last few days just how much I love him (oh yea, it’s going to be one of THOSE posts!) I guess that’s normal when you’re away from someone for a few days and you see them again. It gave me time to think about things I wouldn’t normally think about.

So, here we go!

I am SO proud of my husband and all that he does for us.

I am just in awe of the fact that he can go to school full time, teach a class at a group gym, substitute teach, run a personal training business, do odd jobs AND work for me on the weekends.

He shoots with me, but he also does some behind the scenes work too. I’ll edit a wedding, then he’ll go through and review what I’ve done too. It’s invaluable to have another set of eyes look at the pictures.

I still cannot believe he can get up at 4:45, train a client, go to school, do some homework, train another client in the evening and get up and do it all again the next day.

What blows me away is that he makes all these sacrifices so that I can follow my dream of photography. Wow. Talk about love that humbles you!

I am so proud of the ways he has grown since we got married. He has become an even more humble man (and if you know Bret personally, you know he is VERY humble). He has become more understanding of me (I’m not exactly the easiest person to love and understand!) He has grown exponentially in his trust in God.

I didn’t think it was possible, but I do love him a little more every day.

So, Bret, I love ya man.
