Day 2937 – A Huge Email Time Suck Off My Mind

Hi, my name is Jennilyn and I’m an education junkie. I watch webinars, read articles, watch YouTube videos, read books, and sign up for a million email lists. When I set up the Journey With The G’s website, social media, and email, I started using that account to sign up for marketing emails. Now, I get dozens of emails each day that I just don’t have time to read. Yesterday, I finally had it. I’m all about minimalism in life, which I strive for, but fail often. Hi, my name is Jennilyn and I’m not perfect.

Now, if you didn’t know, Google is amazing in how they have their email set up. There is a way to route your email so it doesn’t clog up your inbox. I took the time to add a filter to EVERY email list I’m on. I took a few minutes with each to put them in sub categories, some with a little note, so when I DO have a minute to sit down and read some of the excellent content coming my way, I’m reminding myself WHY I signed up in the first place. If you have this problem too, let me walk you through what I did.

How to set up filters in Gmail
Copy the email address
Open a new window and open your settings, this makes it easier to add a bunch of filters for each email at once
Click on Filters and Blocked Addresses (at the top of the screen)
Click on Create a new filter at the top or in the middle of your screen (depends on if you have filters set up or not)
Paste the email address into the From box
Click on Create filter with this search
this is how I did mine, but there are lots of options to choose from. I wanted to file these emails right away.
Check Skip the Inbox (Archive it)
Check Apply the label:
Select New Label in the drop down
Check Nest label under:
Select to read (or whatever you call the label)
Type the company or person’s name as the new label
For example, if you signed up for the Journey With The G’s email list, you might say “Journey With The G’s (travel advice)”
Click Create
Check Also apply filter to XX matching conversations
Click Create filter

All the emails that fit that description will be moved!

Go back to your inbox window and refresh. Repeat the process until your inbox is empty. In the future, I will be adding filters when I join a list. If you’re like me, and go on a sign up binge, you totally forget why you signed up for someone’s list. I’m hoping adding this small switch in my education workflow will help me really learn and not be bogged down with 20-30 email notifications every day that I honestly won’t get to in that moment.

Now, this is what I see when I go into my gmail. 🙂

Day 2847 – A Book That Changed My Life – Unmistakable

While enjoying my time here, I finished reading an absolutely life-changing book, Unmistakable* by Srinivas Rao. The whole idea of the book is that being only, is so much better than best. You want your work to be unmistakable.

I have taken copious notes while reading this book. But I wanted to share this quote in particular.

We become so indoctrinated, it’s as if we’ve been institutionalized. We forget that our life is what we make of it. Only when we have the audacity to question the status quo can we disrupt it.

I cannot even put into words how many life-changing thoughts came through the pages and into my brain. So many things that gave me confirmation about who I am, who I want to be, and not caring what others think.

If you need a little (or big) jump start in your life, I highly recommend this book.

Day 2291 – How To Read More/Listen To More Podcasts/And All Around Get More Done

A few days back, I watched a great video on FightMediocrity. This guys does animations on books and I’ve really enjoyed learning from books I may not read on my own. One of the suggestions he shared from a book was playing audio books at a higher speed. So if you have a 10 hour book, on speed 2x and a half an hour commute, you’ve listened to one book in a week. Today I tried it out on a podcast and holy smokes, it worked. I listened to an hour podcast in half an hour and I still processed what I was said – faster. I did pause it at one point to write down a note and, no lie, I felt like I was writing in molasses. I felt SO SLOW! But it was a great experiment in fast learning.

It’s a lot like Spritz that will allow you to read websites faster. This is something I really need to use more, especially when reading articles and blog posts online. You can set the speed and rewind if necessary. I just read an article at 250 WPM and I was done in about a minute and a half.

But I will say, there are some things I LOVE learning slow. Nothing beats holding an actual book and turning the pages. But if it’s on a topic that I know really well and will repeat a lot, why not use a tool that will help me get the new knowledge faster?

Have you found any tools that help you learn faster?

p.s. This is an old image, but a great book!

Day 1942 – The Best Free Business Investment You Can Make

There are countless pieces of advice on business out there, on pretty much every topic and every type of business. There are systems, get rich quick schemes, books, webinars, conferences, etc. I have invested my fair share into all of these things. A lot more than I really should have, to be honest, so I hope knowing that, I know a little bit about what I’m talking about.

So, what is this magical free investment in your business? What can make all your dreams come true (if you get of your own way of course)?

Simple. The library. Hands down, this has been the best investment in my time and education AND my business over the last ten years. The amount of knowledge you can gain from a library is staggering. And I’ll bet I have an answer for your most common “complaints” about it.

Whining excuse reasoning – I don’t have time.
I’m sorry, but yes you do. You have so much more time than you realize. When you want to check Facebook, read a page in a book. Even reading one page in a book each day means you read a book or two a year. You find time for the things that are important to you. Ask yourself if your business and making money is more important than Facebook/Candy Crush/Clash of Clans/watching TV/whatever. This is especially true if you are the owner of a small business – your family is counting on YOU to eat, don’t let them down.

Whining excuse reasoning – My library is small.
Sorry again, so is mine. You can reserve books online and send them to your branch. I would say I’ve requested hundreds of books since I realized I could do this. It’s so convenient to put in the request and pick it up from my branch when I can. I do this online, but you can get help at your local branch from your librarian. Full disclosure – I used to drive to multiple branches to get the books I needed. What a waste of time and gas.

Whining excuse reasoning – I hate to read.
Answer? Books on tape. Again, use that requests feature. There are a ton of books on tape, fiction and non-fiction. This is especially helpful if you have a long commute. You can also listen to these while you’re on the treadmill walking/running.

Whining excuse reasoning – Reading books won’t help my business.
Over the last year, I’ve read several books that have completely changed my mindset, my business and my life. Through the knowledge I gained, I made big changes in my business that have increased my productivity and helped me to bring in more money….to the point that we can actually look into ways to SAVE our money! What a change from 2 years ago when Bret lost his job and we were living paycheck to paycheck!

Whining excuse reasoning – Any other excuse reason you may have.
Running a business isn’t easy. It takes a great deal of work, time, sacrifice, blood, sweat, tears, fights with your spouse, money….and the list goes on and on. There is not “get rich quick” answer to cancel out the hard work. If someone tells you there is, be very very wary. You’re probably making THEM rich and not yourself. You have to put in the time in different areas of your business. You have to read and you have to actually DO the things that are suggested in those books….if they line up with your business model, brand and target clients, of course.

What about you? What’s your excuse and how can I talk you into reading and using your library?

Bonus – you can get NEW DVD releases at the library too….for FREE. There will be a waiting list for the newest stuff (unless you put in a request early), but hey, a free movies add up! Even if you’re using Redbox!
