About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 3105 – 8.5 Years Married To My Favorite Guy

Every day married is a milestone, in my eyes. Every day I get to spend with Bret is a gift. We’ve gotten into the habit of saying something along the lines of “I’m glad I get another day with you!” or “yay! You’re alive today!” each morning.

Today is our eight and a half year anniversary. I don’t typically celebrate half anniversaries…mostly because I forget about it. But I do celebrate on most 11th day of the month and Saturdays, and by celebrate, I tell Bret “happy anniversary!” to which he replies “thanks” and/or “dang it!” (because I said it first).

Who knows how many sleepovers I’ll get to have with my weirdo best friend, but I am sure enjoying each one I do get.

Day 3105 – Happy Peculiar People Day! – or – Is Anyone Really Normal?

I love this quote from the Days of the Year website – “Peculiar People Day is here to celebrate the leaders of the strange and unusual, those who refuse to succumb to the world’s idea of what is normal and sane.”

Whether it’s being a minimalist, or not wanting kids, or publicly sharing about my alcoholism, I’ve never quite felt normal. It took years until I could accept myself and say “wait, I LIKE being abnormal!”

So friends, celebrate what makes you peculiar today!

Day 3104 – Change Your Mindset, Change Your Life

“Mindset” is such a buzz word, it can be easy for it to lose its meaning from overuse. But changing our mindset in different areas has truly changed our lives the past few years. We’ve had some major shifts in how we view our money over the last year, as well as how we spend our money and think about saving for things. I’m in the process of creating a budget for an EPIC trip to Disney World and Universal Studios. I want to include EVERYTHING we want to do and not come at it with a “how can we do this cheaply” mindset. I’m trying to take my own advice from My road trip book (Note this is an affiliate link – so I’ll get a small percentage if you purchase) and I’m planning a big trip so I know what it would actually cost. Instead of thinking it’s a “pie in the sky” trip, I’ll know, we need XXX to make this trip, what do we need to do to get there?

I had a seemingly “small” mindset shift from reading a book about consistently showing up, every day. Before I was just overwhelmed with everything I needed and wanted to do, but once it clicked that it’s ok to take even super small steps (one page read, one blog post edited, one small workout) because they add up to huge things over time. Instead of feeling “I’ll NEVER get all this done” I now think, “ok, I may still have a long way to go, but I’m making my way there.”

Also changing from a “We can’t afford this” mindset to “HOW can we afford this?” has been a huge shift.

I’ve even changed my mindset about my online presence. I thought I had to get my other websites up to date and regularly updating them to be successful. But it hit me – THIS blog is my home in this digital world. THIS is where I have set up shop. Even though my name isn’t in the web address, this is where people are finding me. And instead of trying to figure out what everyone wants me to write, I’ve embraced writing what I want and what I’m experiencing. (Thank you to Tribe of Mentors for this particular shift). And I’ve already noticed a change. From more views to more subscribers to feeling truly proud about each post. Sure, they’re taking a lot longer to write and that takes time from other projects, but I feel good about it.

I think the best advice on this whole “mindset thing” is that it’s ok to change your mind about things. It’s ok to think one way and then another and then go back to what you originally thought. Growth, honesty, and a willingness to fail is what we’re after here.

Have you had a recent mindset shift? Was there one big event that change your mind about things or was it little things along the way? Let me know in the comments below.

Day 3103 – My Favorite Photo Pose!

One pose I almost always make for a photo is the AHHHHH face. I feel the most confident and myself when I make this face. I feel like it says “I LOVE what I’m doing right now and I have to shout about it….even if I make no noise.”

When we take a selfie with a group now, we encourage this face. Thankfully, we had some willing folks to do so with us!

Day 3102 – My First Three Books Read This Year – 3 Down, 297 To Go!

Well, we’re seven days into the new year and I’m at 3 out of 300 books read. Not going to lie, I really hate seeing “you are 2 books behind on Goodreads.” But, I can look back on last year and see that it is possible.

It does feel pretty good to say I have completed 1% of my goal already. Two of the books were chosen only because of the different reading challenges I’ve started.

The first book of the year was on a display shelf at my local library. It had an interesting cover and when I picked it up, I noticed it folded open in fun ways. This fulfilled “A book that involves a bookstore or library” in the 2018 Popsugar Reading Challenge.
Book #1 – The Strange Library by Haruki Murakami

One of the first things I noticed in the 2018 Read Harder Challenge was “A comic that isn’t published by Marvel, DC, or Image” and this turned into the second book I read. It’s been a while since I read a comic and it felt great to do so again. It was a pretty interesting concept and I might read the next issues, but I remembered that reading too much violence isn’t good for me (and why I stopped reading comics). So we’ll see.
Book #2 – Welcome Back – Vol 1 – Help, I’m Alive by Sebela, Sawyer, Roe, and Zamudio

A little trick I picked up last year was to quicklyup my books read is by reading college commencements turned into books. They are inspirational, quick reads, that have sometimes changed my life. I suppose my definition of what makes a book a “full book” may be different, but hey. This book was “A book you meant to read in 2017 but didn’t get to” from the 2018 Popsugar Reading Challenge.
Book #3 – Now Go Out There (and get curious) by Mary Karr

Currently reading:
– Let’s Get Visible: How To Get Noticed And Sell More Books by David Gaughran – I’m reading this ebook a little every morning.
– Tribe of Mentors by Timothy Ferris – I’m working through this in the morning – I’m loving it!
Ready Player One (Amazon Afilliate Link) by Ernest Cline – reading this one a second time because I love it so much and can’t wait for the movie!
Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (Amazon Affiliate Link) by J. K. Rowling – reading this a bajillionth time because I’ve been meaning to reread the series.
– The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch

What are you reading today?
