Day 3490 – Reading Goals For This Year

When I started this year, I knew my reading goals had to be different than the last two years. I think the last two years were about volume and not as much about substance…and enjoyment. So my goal for this year is enjoyment.

I am working through three challenges, but the goal isn’t necessarily to finish them. I’ve already put my enjoyment goal into practice. I started reading a book, and just wasn’t feeling it, there was no joy in it, so I stopped.

I’m reading kid’s picture books again, they truly did bring me so much joy in 2017 when I read 200 of them. The simplicity of the messages of the books is amazing, and I am brought to tears or unfettered joy often. My most recent “made me cry” read was Sterling, Best Dog Ever by Aidan Cassie. I’m tellin’ ya, kids books man.

Day 3461 – End Result Of My 2018 Reading Challenges

Woooooo! Hello 2019! Last year was such a great year for my reading and I loved what I read. Here is my last batch of books read. I’ll share my final counts below. If a book has a link and one of these little guys * it is an Amazon Affiliate link. That means I’ll get a small percentage if you order it or something else, at no additional cost to you.

If you want to see a nice overview of my reading, check out this lovely page Goodreads has put together.

Book #159 – Howliday Inn – this fulfilled a book originally published in the year you were born in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #160 – Pippi Longstocking – this fulfilled a book by a Scandinavian Author in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #161 – Sea Prayer – this fulfilled a short story in the BCPL reading challenge.
Book #162 – Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – this fulfilled a book written before 1920 in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #163 – Unwritten – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #164 – Water from My Heart – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #165 – It Doesn’t Have to Be Crazy at Work – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #166 – The Bible – this fulfilled a book on theology in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #167 – Thunder and Rain – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #168 – Elevation – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #169 – Waiting for Eden – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #170 – You Are a Badass Every Day: How to Keep Your Motivation Strong, Your Vibe High, and Your Quest for Transformation Unstoppable – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #171 – The Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #1) – this fulfilled a banned book in the Modern Mrs. Darcy challenge.
Book #172 – Happy People Read and Drink Coffee – this fulfilled a book in translation in the Modern Mrs. Darcy challenge.
Book #173 – Crabby the Crab – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #174 – Rattles, the Barn Cat Misfit – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #175 – Harry the Happy Mouse – this fulfilled none of my challenges.

The best book I read this year – The Third Door: The Wild Quest to Uncover How the World’s Most Successful People Launched Their Careers*

The second best book I read – You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth*

The hardest book I read – Death of a Salesman. I have taken great pains to follow my dreams and craft a life that I want. This was hard to read to because of that. It makes me so sad when folks spend their whole lives working towards something to have so little at the end and be filled with much regret.

Favorite New (to me) Author of the year – Charles Martin. I am loving how he writes, especially about marriage. I’m tearing through his catalog and haven’t been even close to disappointed yet.

My favorite reading challenge – Hands down, The Mommy Mannegren 52 Books in 52 Weeks Challenge. Make sure you check out the 2019 challenge!

Final counts:
The 2018 Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge – read 12 out of 12. Completed!
The 2018 #BWELLREAD Reading Challenge – read 12 out of 12. Completed!
The 2018 Popsugar Reading Challenge – read 31 out of 50.
The 2018 Read Harder Challenge – read 14 out of 24.
The Mommy Mannegren 52 Books in 52 Weeks Challenge – read 52 out of 52. Completed!
Reading Bingo – this was one I got from my local library. It’s from Penguin Random house, but I can’t find a link to it. – read 15 out of 24.

Are you doing any reading challenges next year? Let me know which ones!

Day 3430 – Update Of Reading Challenges – One Month To Go, Will She Hit 300 Books?

Whew, 11 months down, 1 to go, so how is my goal of 300 books in a year going? Well, it is extremely unlikely that I will hit that goal. My current book count is 158, unless I read 142 short books, I won’t hit it. But, my realistic goal of 175 this year should be achievable.

Here’s a breakdown of my last month of reading and my thoughts. There are a few affiliate links in here, marked with this -> * because I did read some great books. This means if you click on a link and make a purchase, I’ll get a small percentage of your order, at no additional cost to you. It’s a way you can say “thanks” for the recommendation:

Book #149 – Murder on the Orient Express – this fulfilled a book by Agatha Christie in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge. This was my very first Agatha Christie book. I wasn’t wowed or disappointed, just, “eh, ok, I can mark that off list.” I did enjoy watching the new movie afterwards.
Book #150 – Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance – this fulfilled a book you’ve heard nothing about in the BCPL reading challenge. Ok, I fudged this one a little bit because I had heard about it before, but the whole motorcycle maintenance, nope, didn’t know much there. This one was recommended a bunch in Tim Ferris’s books, and by his podcast guests. I was very, very underwhelmed. I rarely finish books that I won’t rate 4 or 5 stars, this one ended up being a 3. I only finished it because it was long (~18 hours of an audiobook), and I had already put in so much time. Oy, happy to have that one done.
Book #151 – Do Purpose: Why brands with a purpose do better and matter more. – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #152 – I’d Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life* – this fulfilled none of my challenges. What’s really funny is that this was written by Anne Bogel of The Modern Mrs. Darcy, and this didn’t fulfill anything in her reading challenge. This book, oh this book, was SO delightful and a MUST read for any book lover. It would make a great gift for one as well, so if you’re wondering what to get the reader on your list who has read everything, I’d recommend this.
Book #153 – Death of a Salesman – this fulfilled a book that has won a Pulitzer Prize – any year in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge. Oh man, this was a HARD read, mostly because I have taken GREAT steps to NOT live a life like this. Oy, hard hard hard.
Book #154 – Ink and Bone – this fulfilled a book with a mystery in the Reading Bingo challenge.
Book #155 – EC Stories: Flood, Recovery, Community* – this fulfilled a microhistory in the Popsugar challenge. I have known the author, Kat Forder, for years and when I heard she was writing a book about the 2018 flood in Ellicott City, I knew I had to read it. This was by no means an easy book, but it truly does help to answer the question “why rebuild after ANOTHER flood?”
Book #156 – The Little Prince – this fulfilled a foreign book translated into English in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #157 – Vox – this fulfilled a book nominated for an award in 2018 in the Modern Mrs. Darcy challenge.
Book #158 – The Mountain Between Us – this fulfilled a best-selling book in the Reading Bingo challenge. I have to say, this was one of the better books I’ve read in a long time. I absolutely adored how the author talked about marriage. I will say, the movie was much like how Ready Player One was, in that you need to see both things as their own things. I only watched about 15 minutes all told of the movie, because they changed the characters SO much.

Current counts on each challenge:

The 2018 Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge – read 10 out of 12, 2 to go.
The 2018 #BWELLREAD Reading Challenge – read 11 out of 12, 1 to go.
The 2018 Popsugar Reading Challenge – read 31 out of 50, 19 to go.
The 2018 Read Harder Challenge – read 14 out of 24, 10 to go.
The Mommy Mannegren 52 Books in 52 Weeks Challenge – read 48, 4 to go.
Reading Bingo – this was one I got from my local library. It’s from Penguin Random house, but I can’t find a link to it. – read 15, 9 to go.

Original goal of 300 – read 158, 142 to go.

I plan on finishing The Modern Mrs. Darcy challenge, The BWELLREAD challenge, and the Mommy Mannegren 52 books in a year challenge. That will give me 7 more books and I’ll only need 10 more to hit my goal. In a lot of ways, I’m looking forward to reading those last 10 just for fun and whatever I want, without trying to fit them into a challenge.

Day 3402 – 148 Books Read – Update Of Reading Challenges

I figured today was a good day to give you an update of my reading challenges! My current goal is 200 books, and I think I can make it. As I’m getting down to the end of a few of the challenges, it’s getting much tougher since I put off some of the harder categories.

Book #132 – To Make Monsters Out of Girls – this fulfilled a book by a female author in the Reading Bingo challenge.
Book #133 – Note to Self: Inspiring Figures Write to the Young People they Once Were – this fulfilled a book of short stories in the Reading Bingo challenge.

Book #137 – Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #138 – Way of the Warrior Kid: The New Recruit – this fulfilled a book mentioned in another book in the Popsugar challenge. His first book, was mentioned in Tools of the Titans (I think. Haha, eeked this one too).
Book #139 – The Death of Mrs. Westaway – this fulfilled a mystery novel in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.

Book #141 – That One Spooky Night – this fulfilled Read a creepy book in the BCPL reading challenge.
Book #142 – One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish – this fulfilled a book you read in school in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #143 – Influencer: Building Your Personal Brand in the Age of Social Media (affiliate link) – this fulfilled a book with a one-word title in the Reading Bingo challenge. Haha, this was another eeker cus it technically has a subtitle. What can I say, it’s getting close to the end of the year. But all joking aside, this book was AMAZING for anyone thinking of being an influencer online. Very meat and potatoes and I love those kinds of books. I highly recommend it! As I mentioned, it is an affiliate link, which just means I get a small percentage if you order, at no additional cost to you. It’s a way of saying thanks for my recommendation!
Book #144 – We’re All Wonders – this fulfilled any book from the 2017 Good Reads Choice Awards in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #145 – Where the Wild Things Are – this fulfilled a book that was once banned in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #146 – The Amazing Social Lives of African Elephants – this fulfilled a book set in Africa in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.

Day 3368 – Update Of Reading Challenges – Read A New Book Month Day 30!

I decided to use the last day of this awesome month to share what I’ve read recently and to give an update on my reading goal. As I close out the 3rd quarter, me thinks 300 books is not going to happen. I’m shooting for 175 at this point, but we’ll how the next three months go. p.s. holy smokes this year has flown by!

I definitely learned a lot about having one focus on this blog for a month…in that I’m a fan (because I knew what to blog about) and not (because I knew what to blog about). My life is too varied and too many different things happen to be limited to one topic and I really enjoy the freedom of this blog to share whatever the heck I want. So, I can’t wait to jump back into the “I have no idea what I’m going to blog about today.”

Without further ado, here is my update.

Book #124 – Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine by Mike Michalowicz – this fulfilled a book based on a true story in the Reading Bingo challenge. I highly recommend this one. We’ve already seen big changes in our finances because of this.
