About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 3181 – How To Deal With Disappointment In Marriage – repost

This came up in my cleaning up the blog session this morning. While not a big marriage disappointment (not getting to take a trip), I think the advice still holds true for bigger disappointments.

Tomorrow marks 9 years since I met Bret. Because of this, we never really celebrated Valentine’s Day. As our dear friend Josh says, you should celebrate love every day. I joke a lot that we celebrate on the day we met so we can get cheap candy.

A bonus of Bret teaching is the number of holidays he gets off. Last year, President’s Day fell on our “met-ya-versary” and we did a mini getaway. It was so great. So this year, I thought, maybe we could do another one? As luck would have it, I found a great Groupon and we booked a 2 night stay Sunday through Tuesday. Bret had to be back to work Tuesday morning, which meant we’d have to leave super early.

As the weather report firmed up, Bret thought it wise to cancel the trip. So we did. I have to admit, I was really disappointment. I’ll be the first to tell you that our living situation is fantastic. It honestly feels like we’ve been on a trip for the last 10 months. But it’s always fun to go away. So once the trip was cancelled, I was really bummed. I even went as far as to look up hotels that were closer for a 1 night stay…before the weather got in the way. It was supposed to start around 11/12, so we figured it wouldn’t be so bad getting home. Bret was on board, but then we decided it probably wouldn’t be a good idea. Again, I was disappointed.

Here’s what we did instead…

Thursday night, we went on a date to a restaurant nearby. Delicious food and good conversation.
Saturday, we got coffee and enjoyed good conversation.
Sunday after church, we tried a buffet and it was one of the best buffets we’ve ever been to. After we got home, we watched a movie, read and chatted. We were able to watch The Walking Dead and Talking Dead live.
This morning, as we walked out the door to grab Dunkin for breakfast, it had already started to snow…a good 3 hours before the weather had called for. I realized, Bret made a really great decision. It would’ve been a mess coming home from the second option of a hotel.

While at first, I was really disappointed….and I let Bret know I was disappointed (I think a big key to dealing with disappointment). I told him since we couldn’t go, I wanted to do something….or at least know what we would do. I’m thankful for that conversation, because it has been a truly wonderful weekend and celebration of us.

How do you deal with disappointment in your marriage?

Day 3180 – Make Up Your Own Holiday – Say No Day

Since adding this fun day, Make Up Your Own Holiday, into my marketing calendar, I’ve been thinking what holiday would I create. There were a few contenders – minimalist day, prioritize your marriage day, say no to downgrading marriage entertainment day (this would be movies that make light of marriage and/or make you cheer for a spouse to cheat or leave).

But at the end of the day, saying no has been a big thing in my life and I want to champion it.

I think the biggest hurdle in saying no is the guilt and judgement you face. Society wants us to say yes to everything, people want us to say yes to them, it’s hard to understand when someone says no, especially if saying no is drastic. I know this is the hardest part of me saying no to different things. I say no for lots of reasons to lots of things. Some of them are very very painful.

At the heart of saying no to things is taking care of yourself. We are our biggest resource and we are a limited resource. If you don’t say no to things, you will use up your resource. You cannot work 24/7 forever. You cannot stay awake forever. You cannot play that game forever. You cannot help others all the time forever.

By saying no, I protect myself, our marriage, and our businesses.

What are you saying no to today?

Day 3178 – A Big Reading Accomplishment – 500 Books Read And Tracked On Goodreads

A few days ago, I checked my Goodreads read shelf, and realized I’ve tracked 500+ books read! I started tracking back in 2014. How I’ve used Goodreads has changed over the years, but it is definitely THE best way to track the books you’ve read, want to read, want to share with others, etc. It is seriously a must have app/tool/whatever you want to call it for anyone who is serious about reading.

Do you use Goodreads? Share your tips and tricks and experiences below.

This is an older photo, but a pretty good representation of my bookshelf at most times. 😀

Day 3177 – Thanks Snow! – or – Real Dates With Bret!

Whooo hooo! I’m so thankful for the snow this week! While I did come down with a cold on the first day, it has been a really great time off with Bret. The first day I mostly rested after I finished my priority work, but we did get to watch Thor Ragnarok. I’ve had a hold request on the DVD at the library for over a month, how wonderful that it arrived the DAY before the snow day! We had recently watched Spiderman Homecoming, in an effort to catch up before Avengers Infinity War. Yesterday, Bret was off of school again, but by lunch, most of the snow had melted, so we were able to watch Black Panther in the theater.

I am SO pumped for Infinity War!
