About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 1833 – Getting To Know Our Clients

One of the things included with every package you book with us is a time to “get to know each other.” It’s basically about 2-4 weeks before the wedding and we spend a little bit of time finalizing the details of the day. The rest of the time is normally spent just chatting and getting to know each other. It’s MUCH easier to smile in front of the camera with people you’ve already belly laughed with and told some of your stories to.

Today, we had a get to know you with one of our upcoming couples and it was such a blast! Their wedding will be in their backyard and I’m SO excited to shoot it!

Here’s a shot of mine and Bret’s rings in my shepherd’s pie! Mmmmmm.

Day 1831- Bret Got A JOB!!!!!!!

After 5 years of school, substitute teaching and a whole lot of side jobs, I am SOOOO proud to say Bret signed a contract yesterday to be a permanent physical education teacher at an elementary school! Praise God!

It was so surreal looking over the benefits packet….knowing that we’ll have things like life insurance, DENTAL insurance and the option for 457b an account! WHAT?

It has been a tough (but VERY fruitful) few years and we are just blown away by the grace God has shown us over the years and this HUGE blessing on us.

Look at how cute he is in his teacher get up! 🙂 *not my picture, taken by a school provided photographer.

Day 1830 – A Life Changing/Life Affirming Book

I recently started reading The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss (* Amazon Affiliate link – this means if you buy the book or something else on Amazon, we’ll get a tiny percentage of your purchase, at no additional cost to you. As a very strict rule, I only share affiliate links to something I’ve used or read personally – I did finish this book and it changed my life). I’m not sure why I waited so long to read it. Maybe I had an idea of what it was going to be and didn’t think it was for me. As I started reading, I realized it was SO for me and in many ways, I’m already living my life like this.

The quote that grabbed me first was this:
“Let’s define ‘laziness’ anew – to endure a non-ideal existence, to let circumstance or others decide life for you, or to amass a fortune while passing through life like a spectator from an office window. The size of your bank account doesn’t change this, nor does the number of hours you log in handling unimportant e-mail or minutiae.”

I’m about 3 chapters in as of right now, but the whole idea of the book (basically, make your life like you want it…and don’t buy the societal myths of job security and using the best years of your life at a job you hate so you can have a comfortable retirement) resonates with me on so many levels.

I’ve made it no secret that we aren’t swimmin’ in the cash and livin’ the high life (financially). Truth be told, I’m making far less than I did at a 9-5 job….and some days, I’m like, sheesh, this sucks, people must think A, B, C….but after reading such a small part of this book, I’m not thinking like that at any more. Sure, I’m making less….but I’m living a MUCH fuller life!

It’s not about what’s in my bank account, I measure my life by the moments that are possible because of my work.

Have you read this book? What are your thoughts?
