Day 3329 – Making Adjustments To My Work Day – or – Bret’s Going Back To His Day Job Today

Today, Bret goes back to work at his day job. While there is some sadness because I’ve loved having him around all day and I’ve enjoyed how much easier it is to share a car, I’m also really excited. We’re making some changes to our real estate investing business and we’ve spent the past few weeks gearing up for those changes. A few of them include me stepping up, growing, and helping more in the business. If you had told me I would be stepping up and growing in the way that I am even six months ago, I would have told you – “No way! I’ll NEVER do that!” Which, is funny, because I try not to say never or always about anything. There are absolutely no guarantees in life and I don’t want to live like there are (well, outside of death and taxes). What I’m seeing is how different experiences have prepared me for these changes. From doing a similar thing for one of my clients to getting to be a part of a meeting with some folks we ultimately got to help in our real estate business.

I think when you start to focus on how your experiences are helping you, growing you, serving you, changing you, preparing you, it changes your outlook on life. If you’re calling each hard thing that comes up in your life as a challenge and not a hard thing, it makes it easier. For example, we’re calling this season of our lives “Investathon” because in a lot of ways, it’s like what I imagine training for a marathon is like. We found for a while we were calling this time things like “the apocalypse”, “the crazy time,” and saying things like “it’s going to be so busy!” Since we both read a lot about mindset and growth, we knew this was a terrible way to talk about it. The language you use to describe your life is huge.

When we talk about this season now, using a word like Investathon brings to mind a reminder that this isn’t a one and done thing. This isn’t a fit it all in quickly thing. This is something we have to show up consistently for, every single day. It’s a reminder that we’re creating a new way of life for ourselves. It’s a reminder that life is what you make it. I wanted to call this something different and I did.

I can’t wait to share how our Investathon goes and how I grow in the process.

Have you ever changed the name of something that made it better….or worse?

For fun, here’s me trying to be just like Bret! They do say the longer you’re married, the more you look like your spouse! 😀

Day 3055 – Happy Entrepreneurs Day!

Woo hoo! What a great day to celebrate! Even though I tend to say small business owner more often than entrepreneur because I always forget how to spell it. 😀

Here’s a few of my favorite entrepreneurs!

Day 3047 – Setting Boundaries And Keeping Them

I have a whole lot going on in my life. Working for clients, working for Bret, writing my third book, building my online presence, reading 300 books this year (29 to go…what?!), just to name a few. I’m learning that having boundaries in my life is the way to fit everything in. I’ve noticed a few habits that have been making it much harder to meet my goals. I’ve noticed a very unhealthy habit with my phone. From checking work emails WAY too much….I mean, seriously, how much is actually going to happen between 8:30 p.m. and 6 a.m.? I was also playing way too many games. I cut them all off, but I have found I need a few. So I’m up to 2 games. As for checking work emails, I am so freakin’ proud of myself….I didn’t check them at all from about Friday at 5 p.m. until, well, I haven’t checked them yet. I always thought the ideal day would include free time all day to use as I wished, but having structure is so important for my workflow. I still have a long way to go, but it feels great to see results already.

How do you set boundaries in your life?

Day 2580 – Working Heartily

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
Colossians 3:23-24

This has become my cornerstone for what God says about work. We can learn a few things about work from this.

God wants us to work.
There is a theme throughout scripture that God wants us to work. You can see God’s plan for man and work way back at the beginning.

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.”
Genesis 2:15

We were created for work. It is a blessing to work. Lest you be tempted to see work as a result of the fall, note that this verse takes place before the fall. Work is a good thing.

We can do whatever we want
I love this verse mostly because it starts with “whatever.” How many times have you found yourself in a stressful situation, thrown up your hands and said “whatever!”? I have purposed to memorize this verse, so almost every time I’m tempted to “whatever” a situation, I’m reminded of this verse.

But we can also look at “whatever” as a very open field. God didn’t say – if you’re a pastor, doctor or lawyer, work heartily. He didn’t limit it to farmers or writers or ice cream truck drivers. Whatever you do. That gives us a pretty open market on work! I would recommend knowing all of scripture and not doing work that goes against scripture – while lucrative, I would assume that robbing others as your profession doesn’t fall under “whatever you do.”

Work heartily
This is another great reminder about work – don’t be lazy. One definition of the word heartily is “in an enthusiastic and energetic way.” This is an encouragement to us to give it our all in our work. With great joy too (my inference). We shouldn’t drag our feet when we go to work. We should approach each new work day with vigor and energy. Why? That leads us to the next thing we can learn from this verse.

As for the Lord, not man

This work business isn’t for us and it isn’t for the man. (ha ha, see what I did there?) It is for our Lord, first and foremost. I think when we focus on working for the Lord and not man, it helps us to be enthusiastic and energetic. I think that God has gifted all of us with unique gifts that we can use for work. When we are doing what He gifted us with, we can find amazing energy.

We work for rewards from God
Another source for our strength in work comes from knowing that we will receive our reward from Christ. Even if you’re in a job that you hate, God has you there for a reason. It could even be just to build your character more into the character of His Son. God’s ways are not our ways and His rewards are not our rewards.

Reflection
What about you? What is holding you back from working heartily? Are you focused solely on getting “attaboy’s” from your boss (even if that boss is you)? Have you ever thought about work in this way? Spend some serious time considering how heartily you’re working and remembering who you’re working for.

Day 2249 – Sometimes A Lame Job Can Lead To Long Friendships (And Clients!)

Ten and a half years ago, I was working at Target. It was a low paying, overworking job. I remember Christmas was just a day to sleep in and work like crazy before and after. But I can look back on that time and I realize I made a LOT of friends and met future clients there. These friends and clients led to more friends and clients.

I met the following clients at Target…

I was reminded of all of the connections I have through working at Target because we went to a party last night with someone I worked with. I’ve made lots of friends through those friends. Here’s a few fun shots from last night.

So if you’re in a job right now that doesn’t pay a lot or you just hate it. You may be making connections that will last over ten years AND meeting some new clients. Who knows, you might make friends with your co-worker’s friends too. 🙂
