Day 3430 – Update Of Reading Challenges – One Month To Go, Will She Hit 300 Books?

Whew, 11 months down, 1 to go, so how is my goal of 300 books in a year going? Well, it is extremely unlikely that I will hit that goal. My current book count is 158, unless I read 142 short books, I won’t hit it. But, my realistic goal of 175 this year should be achievable.

Here’s a breakdown of my last month of reading and my thoughts. There are a few affiliate links in here, marked with this -> * because I did read some great books. This means if you click on a link and make a purchase, I’ll get a small percentage of your order, at no additional cost to you. It’s a way you can say “thanks” for the recommendation:

Book #149 – Murder on the Orient Express – this fulfilled a book by Agatha Christie in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge. This was my very first Agatha Christie book. I wasn’t wowed or disappointed, just, “eh, ok, I can mark that off list.” I did enjoy watching the new movie afterwards.
Book #150 – Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance – this fulfilled a book you’ve heard nothing about in the BCPL reading challenge. Ok, I fudged this one a little bit because I had heard about it before, but the whole motorcycle maintenance, nope, didn’t know much there. This one was recommended a bunch in Tim Ferris’s books, and by his podcast guests. I was very, very underwhelmed. I rarely finish books that I won’t rate 4 or 5 stars, this one ended up being a 3. I only finished it because it was long (~18 hours of an audiobook), and I had already put in so much time. Oy, happy to have that one done.
Book #151 – Do Purpose: Why brands with a purpose do better and matter more. – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #152 – I’d Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life* – this fulfilled none of my challenges. What’s really funny is that this was written by Anne Bogel of The Modern Mrs. Darcy, and this didn’t fulfill anything in her reading challenge. This book, oh this book, was SO delightful and a MUST read for any book lover. It would make a great gift for one as well, so if you’re wondering what to get the reader on your list who has read everything, I’d recommend this.
Book #153 – Death of a Salesman – this fulfilled a book that has won a Pulitzer Prize – any year in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge. Oh man, this was a HARD read, mostly because I have taken GREAT steps to NOT live a life like this. Oy, hard hard hard.
Book #154 – Ink and Bone – this fulfilled a book with a mystery in the Reading Bingo challenge.
Book #155 – EC Stories: Flood, Recovery, Community* – this fulfilled a microhistory in the Popsugar challenge. I have known the author, Kat Forder, for years and when I heard she was writing a book about the 2018 flood in Ellicott City, I knew I had to read it. This was by no means an easy book, but it truly does help to answer the question “why rebuild after ANOTHER flood?”
Book #156 – The Little Prince – this fulfilled a foreign book translated into English in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #157 – Vox – this fulfilled a book nominated for an award in 2018 in the Modern Mrs. Darcy challenge.
Book #158 – The Mountain Between Us – this fulfilled a best-selling book in the Reading Bingo challenge. I have to say, this was one of the better books I’ve read in a long time. I absolutely adored how the author talked about marriage. I will say, the movie was much like how Ready Player One was, in that you need to see both things as their own things. I only watched about 15 minutes all told of the movie, because they changed the characters SO much.

Current counts on each challenge:

The 2018 Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge – read 10 out of 12, 2 to go.
The 2018 #BWELLREAD Reading Challenge – read 11 out of 12, 1 to go.
The 2018 Popsugar Reading Challenge – read 31 out of 50, 19 to go.
The 2018 Read Harder Challenge – read 14 out of 24, 10 to go.
The Mommy Mannegren 52 Books in 52 Weeks Challenge – read 48, 4 to go.
Reading Bingo – this was one I got from my local library. It’s from Penguin Random house, but I can’t find a link to it. – read 15, 9 to go.

Original goal of 300 – read 158, 142 to go.

I plan on finishing The Modern Mrs. Darcy challenge, The BWELLREAD challenge, and the Mommy Mannegren 52 books in a year challenge. That will give me 7 more books and I’ll only need 10 more to hit my goal. In a lot of ways, I’m looking forward to reading those last 10 just for fun and whatever I want, without trying to fit them into a challenge.

Day 3405 – What Am I Reading Now?

It’s been a while since I gave an “in progress” reading photo, so here you go! I’m making my way through some of the harder prompts in The Mommy Mannegren 52 Books in 52 Weeks Challenge.

I’m reading Death of a Salesman for a book that has won a Pulitzer Prize – any year. I’m really having a hard time with this one. I can’t really get into it, but I’m putting in about 2 pages a day.

Pippi Longstocking is going to be for a book by a Scandinavian Author. It’s been really fun to read this one. I believe I read it as a kid and I definitely have lots of Pippi tendencies.

Howliday Inn is going to fulfill a book originally published in the year you were born. What’s great about this book is that the author, James Howe, wrote one of my all-time favorite kid’s books, Brontorina. It’s been really funny so far.

The Little Prince is going to fulfill a foreign book translated to English. I tried to read this last year but just couldn’t get into it. I’m trying again and I am enjoying it so far.

EC Stories, Do Purpose and I’d Rather Be Reading are just ones I’m reading because I wanted to. I’m not sure if they’ll fit into any of the prompts, but we’ll see.

What are you reading right now?

Day 3402 – 148 Books Read – Update Of Reading Challenges

I figured today was a good day to give you an update of my reading challenges! My current goal is 200 books, and I think I can make it. As I’m getting down to the end of a few of the challenges, it’s getting much tougher since I put off some of the harder categories.

Book #133 – Note to Self: Inspiring Figures Write to the Young People they Once Were – this fulfilled a book of short stories in the Reading Bingo challenge.
Book #134 – An Audience of One: Reclaiming Creativity for Its Own Sake – this fulfilled a book involving a sport in the Popsugar challenge. He talks a lot about surfing, so I eeked this one in. 😀

Book #137 – Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity – this fulfilled none of my challenges.

Book #141 – That One Spooky Night – this fulfilled Read a creepy book in the BCPL reading challenge.
Book #142 – One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish – this fulfilled a book you read in school in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #143 – Influencer: Building Your Personal Brand in the Age of Social Media (affiliate link) – this fulfilled a book with a one-word title in the Reading Bingo challenge. Haha, this was another eeker cus it technically has a subtitle. What can I say, it’s getting close to the end of the year. But all joking aside, this book was AMAZING for anyone thinking of being an influencer online. Very meat and potatoes and I love those kinds of books. I highly recommend it! As I mentioned, it is an affiliate link, which just means I get a small percentage if you order, at no additional cost to you. It’s a way of saying thanks for my recommendation!
Book #144 – We’re All Wonders – this fulfilled any book from the 2017 Good Reads Choice Awards in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.

Day 3368 – Update Of Reading Challenges – Read A New Book Month Day 30!

I decided to use the last day of this awesome month to share what I’ve read recently and to give an update on my reading goal. As I close out the 3rd quarter, me thinks 300 books is not going to happen. I’m shooting for 175 at this point, but we’ll how the next three months go. p.s. holy smokes this year has flown by!

I definitely learned a lot about having one focus on this blog for a month…in that I’m a fan (because I knew what to blog about) and not (because I knew what to blog about). My life is too varied and too many different things happen to be limited to one topic and I really enjoy the freedom of this blog to share whatever the heck I want. So, I can’t wait to jump back into the “I have no idea what I’m going to blog about today.”

Without further ado, here is my update.

Book #112 – Obama: An Intimate Portrait The Historic Presidency in Photographs – this fulfilled A book you heard about online in the Reading Bingo challenge. This was a really cool read and I recommend you check it out.
Book #113 – Practical Meditation for Beginners: 10 Days to a Happier, Calmer You – this fulfilled A book with an ugly cover in the Popsugar challenge. This was a really helpful guide to meditation and opened my eyes to different ways to meditate I’ve never tried before.
Book #114 – The Cake Therapist – this fulfilled A book with food on the cover in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge. This was a slower read for me, but fun story. lol, made me hungry every time I read. 😀
Book #115 – Cape Cod and the Islands: A Drone’s Eye View by Christopher Seufert – this fulfilled none of my challenges. I’ve added in some photography books to my reading challenges and this one did not disappoint.
Book #116 – The Wendy Project by Melissa Osborne – this fulfilled a book with a character who shares your name (there was a Jen in there) in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #117 – The Many Deaths of Scott Koblish – this fulfilled a funny book in the Reading Bingo challenge.
Book #118 – Little Moments of Love by Catana Chetwynd – this fulfilled none of my challenges.
Book #119 – The Third Door: The Wild Quest to Uncover How the World’s Most Successful People Launched Their Careers by Alex Banayan – this fulfilled a book written by an author under 30 in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge. This was one of the best books I’ve ever read.
Book #120 – Me & McDuff: How a Dog Inspired My Journey to a Creative Life by Leslie Oschmann – this fulfilled a book with bad reviews in the Mommy Mannegren 52 books challenge.
Book #121 – Kid President’s Guide to Being Awesome by Robby Novak – this fulfilled Read a book you’ve always meant to read in the BCPL reading challenge.
Book #122 – Blue Sky White Stars by Sarvinder Naberhaus – this fulfilled a book with your favorite color in the title in the Popsugar challenge.
Book #123 – Passive Aggressive Notes: Painfully Polite and Hilariously Hostile Writings by Kerry Miller – this fulfilled a book that scares you in the Reading Bingo challenge.
Book #124 – Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine by Mike Michalowicz – this fulfilled a book based on a true story in the Reading Bingo challenge. I highly recommend this one. We’ve already seen big changes in our finances because of this.
Book #125 – What Do You Want to Do Before You Die?: Moving, Unexpected, and Inspiring Answers to Life’s Most Important Question by The Buried Life – this fulfilled a book of social science in the Read Harder Challenge.

Day 3367 – Read My Books! – Read A New Book Month Day 29 (And Four Years As Sober Jennilyn!)

I would be remiss if I didn’t suggest my own books this month. As an aside, today is my FOUR-year soberversary! If God hadn’t changed my life four years ago, I don’t know if I would be able to say I published two books.

Being sober has changed so much of my life and I’m so thankful that reading more and writing more is included in that list. I have found my voice through this blog and my books. YOU my readers, have in many ways changed my life. Your interest in my alcoholism has encouraged me to pursue writing a book about my experiences. Your blog views have meant the world to me.

My first book, Trusting God With 2 Cents: 22 Days To Becoming A Successful Christian Business Owner, was quite a journey. I learned so much about myself, writing, and what God has to say about work while writing. It started in one place (very much about ME and MY experiences) and ended in a completely different (very much what GOD says about work, and very little about me).

I always said that I would consider that book a success if just one person was impacted. If you check out the link above, you’ll see a wonderful review. That book is a success to me.

Earlier that year, 2016, we took our fourth cross-country road trip. That trip changed me in so many ways. The biggest was my love of road trips was rekindled and my desire to share the joy of more travel was set ablaze.

The worst thing I hear is “I’ve always wanted to do that, but….” I want to grab folks and say, that’s just not true! I started my journey in sharing my knowledge about road trip travel in my second book, Planning an Epic Road Trip on any Budget. I also started my road trip community on Facebook.

I definitely see that book as a success as well because of the folks who have made changes in their travel lives because of it. I’ve loved growing with my community and sharing the joys of planning for and taking trips. If you want some help planning a road trip, come join us!

Even if you haven’t (and aren’t planning on) buying/reading one of my books, you showing up here on my blog means so much to me. I’ve blogged before about wanting to stop some days, but it is you, my dear readers, who help me to carry on. You are a part of my growth as an author and a blogger. Thank you.

Check out all of my 2018 Read A New Book Month recommendations.
