Day 3246 – How Bret Sold His First House And How He Has Been Successful – As Told By His Wife – repost With Updates

I thought today would be an appropriate day to reshare the following post. This afternoon, Bret and I will be going to a closing on our fifth house. It’s crazy how much has changed in us and our business over the last year. Looking back, I’m still not sure why I didn’t jump right in with Bret at the beginning. But now that we’re working together, it’s a perfect marriage (see what I did there?) of our skills. We definitely have found a groove and look forward to rocking out another amazing year.

The following things I noticed in Bret are still true today.

A few days ago, Bret sold his first house as a real estate investor. He has been working towards this for nearly 8 months. I wanted to share what I saw in his life that produced this awesome success.

He didn’t quit – There were many times he could have quit. Many times he could have said, “this is too much work, I’m not getting any results, I’m done.” But he didn’t. He kept working, he kept hustling, he kept growing.

He found a mentor – For years, I’ve noticed a trend among very successful people – they have a mentor. You always hear them say “my mentor said this, my mentor told me to do that.”

He listened to his mentor…eventually – This is a big key to success – actually listening to the one who has been there before you, who knows what you need to do, and ways you need to change. There were many times Bret’s mentor would say, “do this or that,” and Bret would do it….he might not like it, but he would do it…eventually.

He made a schedule, and stuck to it – I saw a big improvement in his business when he made a schedule and created systems in his business, and stuck to them.

He didn’t let successes give him an excuse to not work – There was one night in particular, where Bret had just spent several hours picking up a house. It was late, after midnight, and it would have been so easy to go to bed. It would have been easy to say “I’ll do it tomorrow.” But Bret followed his schedule and put out flyers.

He constantly fed his mind – Bret listened to so many books and podcasts while he worked.

He sacrificed – Bret is not a big drinker. He might have 1-2 beers on a weekend. Once he started with real estate investing, he limited himself to only having a beer at a party or when we hung out with friends. He repeatedly said, I want to wait to get beer until I close a deal. The night he closed his deal, he had two beers. 🙂

We will be celebrating with a mini trip or two away in the coming weeks, but that night we celebrated with Taco Bell and Bret had his beer, finally.

Even though he’s celebrating here, he’s also still working.

Way to go babe, I’m so proud of the success you’ve achieved and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes us.

Day 3240 – Geek Pride Day!

Ah me, I am a geek about a lot of things. Whether it’s tracking my reading through Goodreads, or creating checklists for flossing, or getting really excited about Pivot Tables or Star Wars, I love geeking out about these things. I’m thankful that I finally let myself embrace these things about myself and truly not care what people think.

How are you a geek?

Day 3238 – “I Have The Worst Job Ever” – or – Perspective – repost

While driving today, I passed a road crew picking up trash and noticed the porta potty on a truck following them. My first thought was “man, it must stink (no pun intended) having a job like that.” But almost as quickly, I started thinking how it might be an answer to prayer for those on the crew. Typically, I think of road crews like that as those who are on work release or it’s part of their prison sentence to do this type of work. If that’s the case, then working outside is an AMAZING opportunity!

It seems to be an easy thing for people to complain about their job.
If you work in production, you wish you worked in the office.
If you work in the office, you wish you could get up and move around from your desk.
If you work as the secretary, you wish you were the boss.
If you work in an office, you wish you worked from home.

But I think we forget that there are two sides to every story….and every job.

So I give a plea – enjoy where you are in your job. Don’t complain. Understand that there are those who would be so grateful for what you have.

But if you do desire more, take action. I’ll leave you with a quote from one of my current reads:

“Mediocrity comes from the Latin words medius, meaning middle, and ocris, meaning rugged mountain. Literally translated, it means to settle halfway to the summit of a difficult mountain. It’s a compromise of abilities and potential; a negotiation between the drive to excel and the biological urge to settle for the most comfortable option.”

Day 3235 – When To Step Away From The Computer

A major portion of my work is done on a computer. From blogging to writing to work for clients, most of my job is on the computer. Yesterday, I powered through a course I purchased and spent hours on the computer. This caused my back to become sore, specifically the muscle controlling the mouse. I knew I had to get off the computer and stop working for the day. It’s harder for me to stop working on the weekends because I see it as “project day” and I want to get a lot done. But I have to listen to my body and stop when I need to.

Thankfully, my soreness is gone and I can work today.

Does your body let you know when you need to stop?
