Day 3246 – How Bret Sold His First House And How He Has Been Successful – As Told By His Wife – repost With Updates

I thought today would be an appropriate day to reshare the following post. This afternoon, Bret and I will be going to a closing on our fifth house. It’s crazy how much has changed in us and our business over the last year. Looking back, I’m still not sure why I didn’t jump right in with Bret at the beginning. But now that we’re working together, it’s a perfect marriage (see what I did there?) of our skills. We definitely have found a groove and look forward to rocking out another amazing year.

The following things I noticed in Bret are still true today.

A few days ago, Bret sold his first house as a real estate investor. He has been working towards this for nearly 8 months. I wanted to share what I saw in his life that produced this awesome success.

He didn’t quit – There were many times he could have quit. Many times he could have said, “this is too much work, I’m not getting any results, I’m done.” But he didn’t. He kept working, he kept hustling, he kept growing.

He found a mentor – For years, I’ve noticed a trend among very successful people – they have a mentor. You always hear them say “my mentor said this, my mentor told me to do that.”

He listened to his mentor…eventually – This is a big key to success – actually listening to the one who has been there before you, who knows what you need to do, and ways you need to change. There were many times Bret’s mentor would say, “do this or that,” and Bret would do it….he might not like it, but he would do it…eventually.

He made a schedule, and stuck to it – I saw a big improvement in his business when he made a schedule and created systems in his business, and stuck to them.

He didn’t let successes give him an excuse to not work – There was one night in particular, where Bret had just spent several hours picking up a house. It was late, after midnight, and it would have been so easy to go to bed. It would have been easy to say “I’ll do it tomorrow.” But Bret followed his schedule and put out flyers.

He constantly fed his mind – Bret listened to so many books and podcasts while he worked.

He sacrificed – Bret is not a big drinker. He might have 1-2 beers on a weekend. Once he started with real estate investing, he limited himself to only having a beer at a party or when we hung out with friends. He repeatedly said, I want to wait to get beer until I close a deal. The night he closed his deal, he had two beers. ๐Ÿ™‚

We will be celebrating with a mini trip or two away in the coming weeks, but that night we celebrated with Taco Bell and Bret had his beer, finally.

Even though he’s celebrating here, he’s also still working.

Way to go babe, I’m so proud of the success you’ve achieved and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes us.

Day 2054 – Sometimes Sacrifice Leads To Regret, Sometimes It Leads To Untold Blessing

I’ve blogged a lot about sacrifice. I’ve blogged a lot about what we’ve cut out of our lives to pay off our debt.

I’m the type of person that does not live with regret. I can look at things and think, wow, that was a bad decision, but I learned from it. Or I can look at something and see how God could have used the situation in one way or another. If I offend someone, I do what is in my power to fix the situation, but at the end of the day, I’m not worried about my reputation. I truly believe that if I am in the right, one day God will defend me.

I can look back on my life and think, wow, it would’ve been really cool if I could have done that or should have done that.

Regret? No sir. I have lived my life, my choices are my own and I live with the consequences.

But I will say there was one thing that I do deeply regret. What’s funny, is that this is a seemingly small thing. You would think that I would deeply regret something big.

A few years back, Bret and I had the opportunity to go see a band we both really love, Thrice. The band has moving songs and a great range of style. The concert was during their farewell tour. It was one of those “we have to go or we will never be able to see them live” type things. But, they were touring during our very hard financial times….the times when we had to cut EVERYTHING out. So even though it wasn’t an expensive show, maybe $20-30, it was still too much.

I look back and see that it was wise to not go. And I HAD seen them myself…just not with Bret.

So, I harbored my regrets but knew nothing could be done.

Then something happened.

I’ve been a “fan” of Thrice on Facebook for years. Since they aren’t touring/together, I didn’t see many updates. But one day, an article popped up, the “Thrice was mentioned in a post” type thing. By George, it was an interview with a band member saying that they may tour again. WHAT?!?!?!?! Are you kidding me??? Are you saying that I may have a chance to see this band again? WITH MY HUSBAND??? I did some research, but no information. I then created a monthly reminder to check for a show. A few weeks back, I saw a post about a festival in Canada…but it was during the week and school….so, that wouldn’t work. But I pressed on and kept checking.

Yesterday, the heavens opened wide and a post was shared by Thrice. They would be playing at the Surf and Skate Festival in New Jersey. Three and a half short hours away.

Friends, we now have two tickets to see our beloved band in a few weeks. We’re even talking about splurging to get a hotel for the whole weekend.

So, if you’re going through a time of sacrifice. Of regret. Of thinking you will never get a chance to do/see/buy/whatever something. Take heart. Sometimes God sees your sacrifice and overwhelmingly blesses you with a gift you never expected.

Heaven knows we’re jumping for joy. ๐Ÿ™‚

Day 1375 – Six Months Living At My Parents’ House…

6 months ago, we moved in with my parents. The reasoning was a combination of Bret losing his job, photography not picking up as quickly as we expected and really just God’s timing. Now, most people raise an eyebrow when you’re 30 years old, married and move back in with your parents. I totally get this, I do. But, the thing that kept repeating in our minds was this quote “Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people wonโ€™t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people canโ€™t.”

Already, we’ve experienced:
– being debt free for the first time in our marriage
– 5 weddings shot and 6 more booked

But there are other benefits to living here:
