About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 3401 – Fallback Friday To My First And Only Marine Corps Ball!

Oh friends, this has been quite a week. I am SO excited to have a restful and productive weekend. It’s the first weekend in a month that we’ve actually been home! Because of the nature of this week, lots of things have been slipping and put to the side (the time of my blog posts included if you haven’t noticed). With that in mind, I’m taking it a little easy today and sharing photos from the USMC ball we FINALLY got to go to, five years ago today. 🙂

Bonus, this first photo was from our first attempt.

Day 3400 – Leaving A Legacy, Even In A Short Life

I’ve blogged a few times about my dear friend who passed away 16 years ago, but today a new thought struck me. He left a heck of a legacy.

Scott was the second big super young loss of my life. He was a much closer friend than my first loss and I still feel the empty spot where he would be.

But as I sit here, 16 years after losing him, I am overwhelmed with the legacy and impact he left on my life. There are nice phrases people can say about how to live your life, but the following are true of me, and I can point to Scott as the reason why.

So Scott, thank you for teaching me these lessons.

– Hug tightly, longly, and with all that you are, because you never know if it’s the last hug.

– Live every day as if it was your last.

– Say what you need to say, so you don’t regret not saying it.

– Enjoy life.

Day 3399 – Bret Just Upped His Halloween Game

I’m going to start by saying I have permission to share this photo!

You may remember how I dressed up like Bret and walked around his school.

This year, he dressed up like his co-worker. I stopped by the school today and I have to say, he did a great job! His co-worker dressed up like Bret and she looks spot on too! They have each of the others’ mannerisms down pat! I had to sit down I was laughing so hard.

Day 3398 – Why I Shared About My Alcoholism

When I was first asked if I would share a testimony at my previous church, I thought I would talk about some awesome things God had done in our lives up to that point. I had put together something, but it was just “eh.”

A few months prior to being asked, I had a moment of “I have to get up and write RIGHT now” where I wrote about my drinking and sobriety. At the time, I thought it as more of a “get it out of my head but never share with anyone” type of thing. Then one day in church, someone else shared something deeply personal in her testimony.

On that particular day, we were helping out in both services, during the second listen of her testimony, I pulled up what I had written about my drinking. Reading through, I thought, I have to share this. This person sharing their struggles, led me to share mine, which has led to others sharing with me.

If you had told the drunk/hungover me that I would put all of it out there, I would have laughed at you and never thought it possible. Then again, that Jennilyn would probably not believe she’d ever get sober.

So if you have something to share, share it. Even if it’s just with a friend. As Thrice would say, “Every scar is a bridge to someone’s broken heart.”

Day 3397 – Calls From Iraq – or – Remembering The Past Makes You Super Thankful For The Present

11 years ago, I was in a long distance relationship, like super long distance. Bret was deployed to Iraq and our communication was very limited and inconsistent. He’d send emails or MySpace messages from time to time. I’d get letters as well. In rare circumstances, I’d also get a phone call. Those were so so so special. Because I knew they were a limited time and he’d have to wait to get to access a phone.

Even when he was living in California, we were limited in communication. But that experience has been HUGE for our relationship and I still see the benefits of that time now. It makes me so thankful for conversations we can have regularly.

Having a long distance relationship really forces you to work on the communication and that is one thing that I attribute our awesome marriage to. Sure, it would’ve been nice to have met someone in my own time zone, and had a normal relationship, but what I have gained by having a crazy relationship has more than made that short time worth it…..ha ha, and I ended up with a crazy relationship and that suits me so much better.
