Day 3352 – What Do You Want to Do Before You Die?- A Book That Reminds You To Dream Big – Read A New Book Month Day 14

What Do You Want to Do Before You Die?: Moving, Unexpected, and Inspiring Answers to Life’s Most Important Question* by The Buried Life was another one of those random finds at the library. It was indeed a moving and inspiring book. The story of the guys who started The Buried Life have a really, really cool story.

This was a quick read but it had a big impact on me. I started my own “Before I Die” list and I have to say, I’ve got some pretty big things on there. Reading the book, which is a compilation of what others have said they want to do before they die, caused me to dream bigger than I ever have…and I dream pretty big.

Some things on my list aren’t surprising – run a marathon, surf, visit all 50 states with Bret.

But some were HUGE – start a non-profit, give away a million dollars, walk on the moon. But here’s the thing, why NOT dream big?

There was a great quote in the book:
Never tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon.” – Anonymous

If you’re looking to increase your dreams, this is the book for you.

Day 3351 – Profit First – A Book That Changed How I Look At My Businesses And Income – Read A New Book Month Day 13

I first heard of Profit First: Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-Making Machine* by Mike Michalowicz on Sunny Lenarduzzi’s YouTube channel. I’m SO glad that this book found its way into my reading list. I just finished it yesterday and I have to say, it has already had an impact on our businesses. We have adjusted every source of income to take a profit out. So I can say, all of our sources of income are profitable now.

There are lots of books about finances and income and how to allocate your money, but what I really liked about this one was he gives you a system that works with where you are. It encourages baby steps and taking a good, hard look at what you’re doing. As luck would have it, Bret listened to this at the same time, so we were able to talk about what we learned in almost real time. It is so important to be on the same page with finances!

If your business isn’t profitable or if you’d like to increase your profitability, this is the book for you.

Day 3350 – Ready Player One – A Book For Video Game Fans – Read A New Book Month Day 12

I’ve read Ready Player One* by Ernest Cline twice and it was just as enjoyable each time. It is packed with an interesting story (I LOVE tournament type stories), hilarious, and chocked full of 80’s references. Bret and I both read a lot but we don’t typically read the same books either at the same time or at all. After I read this book though, I essentially shoved the book into his hands and forced him to read it. The only other time I’ve done that was with You Are A Badass At Making Money. Thankfully, I was not wrong in my suggestion as he loved it too.

If you’ve seen the movie or have read the book and not seen the movie, well, to be honest, they’re two different things. I understand the changes they made for the screen but there was so much they left out. What helped me not hate the movie because of so many differences was to think of them as two different animals. The movie was still a fun ride, I will give it that.

If you’re looking for a fun fiction book that gives you lots of great brain pictures, this is the book you’re looking for (said in my best Obi-Wan voice).

Day 3349 – Blue Sky White Stars – A Children’s Book That Captures The Heart Of America – Read A New Book Month Day 11

Seventeen years ago, the events of 9/11 made me realize how much I love this country and that I am actually quite patriotic. Having driven across this country four times and seen so many amazing places and met many great people, I can’t help but love it even more. During my year of reading children’s books, I came across the book I’m sharing today. Blue Sky White Stars* by Sarvinder Naberhaus and illustrated by Kadir Nelson brought me to tears upon reading. Despite being short on words (a total of 68), the images and contrasts are starking and moving. It is an amazing picture of our country, with all its diversity.

If you’re looking for a book to share the vastness of our great country with your kids or if you want a beautiful book about this old U S of A, this is the book for you.

Day 3348 – Dream Big, Think Small – A Book That Surprisingly Changed Everything – Read A New Book Month Day 10

I’ve talked about Dream Big, Think Small: Living an Extraordinary Life One Day at a Time* by Jeff Manion before, but it bears repeating during read a new book month, because this one completely changed my life and mindset about small steps.

Before I read this book, I stressed about how much work I was doing on this blog and really, all areas of my life. I felt like what I was working on just wasn’t making a difference in my life. But this book taught me that even little, bitty, baby steps added up to a lot over time. Just the act of showing up and writing for five minutes each day adds up to two and a half hours of writing in a month. Just the act of showing up for this blog every day and writing a few hundred words adds up to about half a million over the lifetime of the blog. I was floored by that one right there. This idea of just reading a few pages every day in a few books adds up to full books read.

If you’re feeling like you’re not making headway on things and find that you’re beating yourself up, this really is the book for you. I point to this book as a huge life-shifting book, and often. What’s funny, is I found it completely randomly. It wasn’t in the new books section, it wasn’t recommended by someone else. I was killing time in the library, and walking the stacks, and found it that way. I don’t do this type of library search often, but I’m so glad I found this book. I read it last year, but it is still helping me to not negate the small stuff I do every day.

This photo is a picture of how I track the “small stuff” in my life. I’ve since modified this to include quite a bit more, but the idea is the same, little bits, every day.
