Day 3401 – Fallback Friday To My First And Only Marine Corps Ball!

Oh friends, this has been quite a week. I am SO excited to have a restful and productive weekend. It’s the first weekend in a month that we’ve actually been home! Because of the nature of this week, lots of things have been slipping and put to the side (the time of my blog posts included if you haven’t noticed). With that in mind, I’m taking it a little easy today and sharing photos from the USMC ball we FINALLY got to go to, five years ago today. 🙂

Bonus, this first photo was from our first attempt.

Day 3399 – Bret Just Upped His Halloween Game

I’m going to start by saying I have permission to share this photo!

You may remember how I dressed up like Bret and walked around his school.

This year, he dressed up like his co-worker. I stopped by the school today and I have to say, he did a great job! His co-worker dressed up like Bret and she looks spot on too! They have each of the others’ mannerisms down pat! I had to sit down I was laughing so hard.

Day 3397 – Calls From Iraq – or – Remembering The Past Makes You Super Thankful For The Present

11 years ago, I was in a long distance relationship, like super long distance. Bret was deployed to Iraq and our communication was very limited and inconsistent. He’d send emails or MySpace messages from time to time. I’d get letters as well. In rare circumstances, I’d also get a phone call. Those were so so so special. Because I knew they were a limited time and he’d have to wait to get to access a phone.

Even when he was living in California, we were limited in communication. But that experience has been HUGE for our relationship and I still see the benefits of that time now. It makes me so thankful for conversations we can have regularly.

Having a long distance relationship really forces you to work on the communication and that is one thing that I attribute our awesome marriage to. Sure, it would’ve been nice to have met someone in my own time zone, and had a normal relationship, but what I have gained by having a crazy relationship has more than made that short time worth it…..ha ha, and I ended up with a crazy relationship and that suits me so much better.

Day 3392 – The Power Of Words To Help Or To Harm

One thing I’ve been thinking about recently is the power of our words. Making a passing comment has the ability to build up or tear someone down, and you may not even realize the impact.

For someone struggling to not drink, hearing “Oh! Why aren’t you drinking? Are you pregnant?? Just one drink!” is a huge deal. When I first stopped drinking, it was SO uncomfortable when someone asked what I wanted to drink.

I’ve talked with folks about this and it’s a very real struggle. I’m practically begging you to NOT make a big deal about someone not drinking.

For someone who has struggled to read, hearing “You only read ONE book this year?!?” When they’ve struggled their whole life to read, getting through one book is an amazing accomplishment. I hope that I haven’t inadvertently done this through my blogging about my reading.

Just like I pass no judgment on someone who drinks, I don’t take lightly your reading habits. If you’ve finally finished that book, I am SO proud of you!

For someone struggling to get pregnant, hearing “When are you having kids? You’d make such a great parent! You’re not getting any younger!” Can be absolutely devastating. I’ve blogged a lot about not asking someone when they’re having kids, and how us not having kids has made me really sensitive to folks that ask these questions. You have no idea what is going on in someone’s life.

For someone struggling to find a workout plan that works for them, hearing “That’s all you did? You should do more. Why aren’t you doing XYZ?” Is a total blow and might make them want to completely give up. You may not know that they’ve been trying to find something for years, and they finally find one that works for them, that has allowed them to show up consistently and make progress.

I am constantly aware that my words have power. I take that very seriously and am considerate of that with each post. I am absolutely humbled when folks talk to me about reading my blog, and what they’ve taken away from it.

I have had folks reach out to me about drinking and I am SO thankful that I put myself out there about my struggle. I think it’s important for others to know that they’re not alone and that not all alcoholics look the same. Some of them look and act just like you and me.

So be careful with your words. Take a few minutes to respond. And think through how they could be taken.

Day 3390 – How Long Does The Honeymoon Phase Last?

A few months back, I read an article, 18 Signs the Honeymoon Phase of Your Relationship Never Ended. It made me so happy to see something like that posted, because, honestly, we are still in the “honeymoon phase.”

I’m not sure if we’ll ever leave the honeymoon phase.

It’s not that our marriage is easy. It’s not that we don’t have hard times. It’s not that there haven’t been tears.

It’s that we’ve grown stronger, every day of our marriage. It’s that we see that struggles actually make you stronger. It’s that having someone to hold you when you cry bonds you together.

So how do you stay in the honeymoon phase?

You are brutally honest with each other.

You are best friends, telling each other everything, and if at all possible – first.

You are ruthless about boundaries.

You prize your spouse most of all.

Are you still in the honeymoon phase?
