Day 3098 – How To Read 300 Books In A Year

Last year, I read 304 books. 200 kids books (picture books) and 104 “adult/full length” books. I was super proud of myself and learned a lot about a lot through reading so much. My previous year, I read 75 books. I like challenging myself to do more, so this year, I am planning on reading 300 books again, but all or very nearly all “adult/full length” books. I know I will read, I have to, but having a big goal is helpful. And a big shout out to Goodreads in helping to keep track of my goal….and telling me if I’m off track.

So what do I do to set myself up for success in this area?

I set aside several times a day to read. My morning tasks include reading through a book on book marketing/blog marketing/etc and reading through Tribe of Mentors. This helps me to chip away at 2 books. My evenings I want to read a little out of a non-fiction and read a fiction book as well. Since we just got back from being away, there are things to catch up on, so my evenings aren’t as open as they normally are, but in the future, I hope to spend an hour or two reading.

I keep track of my progress in Goodreads and on a sheet of paper. This serves as a double check to make sure I’ve recorded all of my books, and an easy way to count up adult vs. kids.

I use reading challenges to expand my options of books. Last year I started two challenges but they fizzled out by February. I’m not sure if I’ll complete any of the ones I’ve chosen this year, but they really help my options. This year, I’m hope to attempt the following:

The 2018 Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge
The 2018 #BWELLREAD Reading Challenge
The 2018 Popsugar Reading Challenge
The 2018 Read Harder Challenge
The Mommy Mannegren 52 Books in 52 Weeks Challenge

There are some fantastic ideas in there (in order of the lists above):
a classic you’ve been meaning to read
a book with a one-word title
a book that was being read by a stranger in a public place
a comic that isn’t published by Marvel, DC, or Image
a book with bad reviews

I listen to audio books during my longer commutes.

But most important, I won’t beat myself up if I don’t meet my goal. The reasons to read are many (authors should read a lot, reading gives you many perspectives, etc) and just the act of reading and learning new things elates my soul.

Are you doing a reading challenge this year?

Day 3086 – Headless Snowmen Cookies

After a completely crazy week, I would say it’s summed up nicely in this picture. I was able to have a quick business coffee with one of my favorite vendors. I grabbed a cookie too. I was so hungry that I took his head off before I took a picture. Thankfully I remembered while I could piece him back together. Still would’ve been a funny picture without his head though…

Day 3083 – My Current Work Watch List!

One of the things I do for Bret is find information online as well as create and maintain spreadsheets. A lot of the work is repetitive/doesn’t need 100% brain focus, so I watch movies or shows in the bottom of my screen while I work.

Here’s what’s on the playlist this week!

Day 3076 – Why Habits Are So Important

As I’ve been making my way through my morning, very slowly and much later than normal, I realized that my morning habits are so ingrained, that I was able to move through them easily. My brain knew what to do next. My morning “always dos” are devotions, writing, working out (though when I’m sick I mark the day as a rest day), reading a book about marketing my books on Amazon, reading Tools of the Titans (SO close to the end!), working on my Pinterest account, blogging, and posting in my Facebook group (Monday through Friday). These are things that happen every day, pretty much no matter what. Because of these habits, I’m making progress towards several goals, even if it’s slow progress.

So while I’m definitely not operating at 100%, the important things are getting done.

Do you do anything every day, no matter what?

Day 3074 – How To Handle Sickness When You Work For Yourself

I’m grateful that this sickness is mostly falling on the weekend, so I don’t have as many responsibilities. But how do I handle sick days being a small business owner? Let me share!

First, I keep my to do lists very organized. I use Asana to keep track of my projects, recurring reminders, and for brainstorming ideas. I am a huge fan of Asana and I’m not sure how I lived without it. This allows me to open each (I have one for each of my clients, and one for my personal projects and Bret’s business), see what to do’s I have for each day, and make my to do lists for any given day.

As I’m looking through my to do lists, I’m writing a list for that day. On the weekends, I’ve started doing one page, at the top I have things I have to do on Saturday and Sunday. Then a big list of the things I hope to do on both days.

When I sat down with the list I created for the weekend I looked through and added stars to to the things that HAD to happen today. Thankfully, past Jennilyn was kind and this weekend’s list was very manageable.

Giving yourself time to rest is very important, because, let’s be honest, as a small business owner, YOU are your company’s biggest asset. Especially if you are the only employee. This is where systems and automation are so important.

The biggest thing I have to overcome when I’m sick is not beating myself up for not working.

I am thankful that this current cold seems to be a much faster moving one than the last one.

How do you handle sickness in your business? Is it hard for you to take time off?
