About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 3226 – Life-Changing Book – You Are A Bad A$$ At Making Money

I read – a lot. I’m already clocked at 73 books this year, over 17,000 pages, and still going strong. Reading is such an important part of my life. It helps me to learn things that apply to my different jobs, my clients, and just my mindset in general. So for me to say that a book is life-changing is a little bit of a big deal.

These links are Amazon affiliate links. All this means is that if you decide to purchase the books or something else on Amazon, I get a small percentage, and you don’t pay anything extra. I will only ever use affiliate links to books and products I have read and/or use myself. I totally, completely, highly recommend these books.

The book in question is You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth by Jen Sincero. This and You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life have been on my To Be Read list for quite some time. I finally got the audiobooks out of the library and listened to both really quickly. She has a way of explaining our mindsets and making comparisons to other things that’s really clear and understandable. Full disclosure, there is language….if that wasn’t apparent from the titles of her books. I recommend the audiobooks because you can hear her inflection and pauses. Haha, and she’s really, really funny.

This book came at a bit of a perfect storm in my life where I had realized – I haven’t been valuing myself in my work (like, it’s embarrassingly bad), I have something to share (secret project I’ll share at some point), I need to make investments in myself and not only be all about investing in our real estate business. For all the books I read, you would think I would have recognized this in myself a lot sooner, but hey, life is about growth and change, amiright?

There was a section in You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life where she talks about the importance of you showing up and doing what you were put on this planet to do. She compared not showing up to your favorite band. How much would it stink if they never went into the studio, never practiced, never wrote any new song? And it just hit me, I have a message to share with people. I have a deep passion for something and by me not sharing that and helping others, they could be missing out on something great.

So, I decided to make a commitment, purchase a course bundle that will help me jumpstart the project, and get started on this new business/dream/project. But then, we were looking into buying a car, putting in an offer on our first house (didn’t get it by the way), and a ton of other financial reasons that said “you shouldn’t do this now!” But I fought my old ways of thinking, and I said you know, if I don’t do this now, I won’t do it. So, I took some time to write out a contract with myself. I listed things I struggle with and how I wouldn’t let them define this new project. And I purchased the course.

And all of this happened because of these books.

What book changed your life?

Day 3225 – Minimalism Series – What Is Minimalism? – repost

Ah, I’m getting super close to finishing my review of my blog and cataloging my posts. This post was the last I reviewed this morning and as we get a lot of questions about minimalism when we talk to people, I thought it would be good to give you our definition again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As we’re gearing up for a new year, I wanted to do a series for y’all about minimalism. I’ll share some things we’ve learned over the past few years and give you some tips to make changes in your life.
For today, I wanted to answer the question “what is minimalism?” What I love about it is that it can have a million definitions and I don’t think any of them would be wrong.
To me, minimalism is minimizing the bad (and the good) to make room for the great.
If you want to get rid of a lot of things just so you can have a massive movie collection, I think you’re still a minimalist, for example. Or if you have a big house with furniture, you can still be a minimalist.
What minimalism has taught me is that is causes you to ask why more often about what you own, as well as the things you do, more often and more deeply. It’s not about getting rid of all of your clothes, it’s about asking – “Do I wear this? Do I enjoy wearing it? If it doesn’t fit right, why do I keep it?” Some things are harder to let go than others, to be sure, but it’s a continual process. I can tell you, about 90% of the clothes in my closet bring me joy and I would call them my favorite clothes.
It also makes me more purposeful in the things I own and do. I don’t just whittle down my to do list and social calendar for no reason. Everything I do and everyone I see is on purpose. This gives me more time to hit the businesses hard, to read a lot, and hang out with Bret.
Day 3224 – How To Celebrate When You’re A Recovered Alcoholic
I have been sober for 3.61 years, 1318 days, but I still have struggles about some aspects of sobriety. One thing that I loved about drinking was celebrating. Having a cold beer on a warm day, enjoying wine on a porch, or champagne for big celebrations. There is a feeling of “missing out” on these things. I definitely have “I wish I didn’t have a problem with this, because I would love to drink this or that in this moment.”
I understand this is my choice to not drink. I understand I miss out on things because of it. I understand I’m in the minority. So when there are companies that put out quality non-alcoholic drinks, I feel seen, cared for, and appreciated.
Last week, I made a big commitment to myself and a new project. I am so proud of myself and wanted to celebrate. I went to a local grocery store, and happened upon their non-alcoholic drinks. I have to say, the Fre company is really on point with their drinks. They happened to have a Brut Sparkling alcohol removed wine/champagne.
Because someone, somewhere, thought of a person like me, in a unique situation, I was able to pop the cork, and drink the bubbly. What’s even better is that it’s lasted a few days, so even now, it’s fizzy….as I drink it out of the bottle.
Sober friends, have you ever had any of these drinks?
Day 3223 – How To Go From “I’ve Always Wanted To Do That!” To “I Did That!” – repost
I’m currently working on a secret project. Don’t worry, I don’t expect it will be a secret for too long, so stay tuned. This project has me thinking about actually doing the things you’ve always wanted to do. I took a big leap last week, on myself, and my dreams. In some ways, it feels like the first time I’ve done that, at least to this scale.
Given that I want more people to go from “I’ve always wanted to do that” to “I did that!” It felt right to reshare the following post.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Driving across the country gives you a lot of time to think, makes you feel very small but also very connected to this country. I absolutely love driving across this amazing country. I’m thankful I’ve had the opportunity to do this FOUR times already with Bret. The first drive was born out of a small travel budget to visit Bret’s family ($1300+ to fly, under $1000 to drive, with a few hotels AND having a car out there), but it has turned into a passion. I LOVE driving across this country!

Whenever I mention I’ve driven cross country, people almost always say “I’ve always wanted to do that!” Then they say something about “one day….once I retire….” I don’t know if I just think about things differently or my life experiences have shown me another way but I just don’t understand how people think it will be so long down the road. I understand it costs money and takes time away from a job and responsibilities. I get that. But what I don’t get is the lack of planning to get there. Driving across the country IS a possibility for you. Even if it takes a while to get to that point, you can get there.

Ok, here comes the honest Jen. We spent over $2000 on this past trip. Way more than we planned, but it was a great trip. The lesson learned is to budget higher than we expect AND reallllllly stick to that budget.

Anyways, let’s use $2000 as a base number. We did a 3 week trip, but spent about 2 of those weeks staying with family. Let’s give you 2 weeks and a hotel/cabin/camping every other night. We’ll also give you a “to California and back” type route. So you’ve looking at about 7,000 miles. This cost us about $450 in gas. We rented a car, so I’ll toss that in too.

A breakdown of expenses:
Gas – $450
Rental car – $600 (we used a discount for teachers, so ours was about $450 – look for discounted options)
Nights in hotels/cabins/campgrounds – 7
Average price per night – $50. Camping is normally cheaper and there are a ton of options for free or nearly free (check out this website for some great options!) We stayed in a KOA cabin for about $50 and a hotel for about $85 in Moab. So I think $50 is a good average, if you can handle camping.
Total needed for lodging – $350
Total for packed meals for two – ~$250 – I bought groceries here and in California before we left. I took time in California to look at ads, look at ibotta and checkout51 deals. This also includes some for ice along the way and the ice chest we purchased. Looking back, I’d maybe spend a little more for a better ice chest OR pack better. I WAY overpacked on my cold foods on the way out, and I think I went through ice faster because of it. It seemed like the way back was better on ice usage. If you’re staying in hotels, you can get some from the ice machine as well. Since we had a small ice chest, I only used 1-2 buckets of ice. If you’ve got a big ice chest, I do NOT recommend this tactic. But, given my history, I’m not one to break rules.
America the Beautiful pass – $85ish – if you want to see the national parks, this is a must. You can pick one up at some of the national parks, but only if they have one on hand. I ordered mine online and did a rush because a typical mailing was too close for comfort to our leave date.
Various fun meals on the road, souvenirs and fun side trips – $300+ – we did fun safaris, got nice local meals and souvenirs. I would make sure this budget is higher than you think you need it to be.

So here’s what we’re looking at:
Gas – $450
Rental car – $600
Total needed for lodging – $350
Total for packed meals for two – ~$250
America the Beautiful pass – $85ish
Various fun meals on the road, souvenirs and fun side trips – $300+

This totals $2035. Some things are flexible – the rental car, doing extras, meals, lodging, etc. But $2000 seems to be a good number.

Let’s look at this from a saving perspective. If you saved $10 every paycheck, you’d have $2000 in 8 years, you’d have enough to go. Not exactly a short amount of time, but if you’re around my age, that’s a LOT closer than retirement.

Let’s say you can save $20 every paycheck. Well sir, you’re taking your trip in 4 years.

But check this out, if you can save $40 every paycheck, you’re taking your trip in two years. TWO years!

So next time I talk to you, you better not say “oh when I retire someday….” NO! You CAN take this trip sooner than that! 🙂

Day 3222 – Sleeping On The Floor, By Choice – repost – With Updates

Three years ago today, I wrote the following post. Three years later and we still sleep on the floor. It continues to be the best sleep I’ve ever had – though, I have also been sober for the duration of sleeping on the floor, so I’m sure that has some weight on the quality of sleep.

We made a YouTube video about sleeping on the floor, which you can watch here, if you haven’t seen it already.

We have been sleeping on the floor for almost 3 weeks. Here’s how it’s going!

First and foremost, we LOVE it! I feel like we get pretty restful sleep…even if it isn’t a full 8-9 hours. I want to say the last 3-4 nights, I’ve gotten between 6-7 hours…yet, I’m getting up with Bret and I’m feeling great throughout the day. I don’t really yawn (except for right now…because I said something about it) and I don’t really feel tired. I have no aches and pains.

Sleeping on a pile of blankets means that cleaning is SO easy. Just pull the blankets to the other side of the room, vacuum, move back and done!

There was one bad….a huge bug….a centipede bent on attack. Seriously, it RAN toward our bed! The alarms sounded and I was sitting up slowly and I saw his approach and I leaped from the floor with the grace of, well, there is nothing I can compare it to….I did not sound out a verbal alarm, only the wide eyed look of fear and Bret leaped too. This guy was in the corner of the room and RACED to our bed and ran around on it! Bret grabbed a shoe and that was the end of that. As far as I know, there have been no other attacks….but for the sweet sleep, a bug here and there is a small price to pay.

Since we’ve been trying to “live light” and only have things that we need, it’s helped with cleaning the apartment. I did a good scrub down and vacuum yesterday and I think I finished in under 30 minutes. What? I mean, that’s awesome! What have I learned in this area? By George, I want to get rid of more! It’s crazy how easy it becomes once you start. It is so easy to throw things away when your eyes are not on this world.

So, would you sleep on the floor?
