About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 3316 – Book Lovers Day

Day 3315 – Planning Work When You’re Going Away

This Friday, Bret and I will be taking a quick trip to Boston and then Lenox to see John Williams (composer of Star Wars, ET, Indiana Jones, etc.) I’m so excited to see him in concert! We spent a bit of time deciding if we would take a longer trip and hit the other 3 states we haven’t visited up that way (VT, NH, ME), but realizing just how much there was to see there and how much we’d be rushing through, we decided it made more sense to just visit MA. After making the decision, I then figured out what I needed to do for work before we left.

If you’re not using it yet, you gotta make Asana a part of your life. I currently have six different accounts for six different businesses. While you don’t need to create so many accounts, it works for me to separate each one. What I love about Asana is I can quickly look at the upcoming tasks by date. I can see what HAS to be done and what can be moved. I can easily change dates and know what to add to each of my written to-dos. This hybrid system of a digital to-do list that I then put on paper to-dos has worked well for me.

I looked at my needs for this blog and for my Facebook group. I wrote everything out and brainstormed what I could write about. I plan on writing and scheduling those today.

Next, I printed off a packlist from my personal Asana account. This is something that is relatively the same for each trip, but I plan on making modifications and using that information for supplementing my new blog.

I also created a to-do list for what I need to do before the trip – booking the rooms, finding different things to do, etc.

So a good deal of the “work” of figuring out what I need to do was already done since I track my tasks in Asana.

In some respects, I feel like I’m overplanning for what is really only one day off since I mostly just do personal project type stuff on the weekends, but it was a good reminder for the benefits of planning things out in advance.

What do you do when planning your work while you’re away for a trip?

Day 3314 – Happy Lighthouse Day!!

Lighthouses make me so happy! This first photo was taken at the top of the Fire Island Lighthouse, and I have to say was just an amazing view.

What’s your favorite lighthouse?

Day 3313 – A Long Overdue Update On My Reading Challenges

It’s been far too long since I gave y’all an update on what I’ve been reading and if I’ll get close to meeting my huge goal of 300 books read in a year. My current total is 111 books read and I’m feeling pretty good about things. I’ve had to adjust a few things, such as my Goodreads goal is 175. Seeing that I’m XX books behind is a horrible motivator. I’ve learned so much already this year that has impacted my life and caused me to be a better person. The reading challenges definitely encourage me to read outside of what I normally read and that’s a great thing. I have been challenged, encouraged, and motivated. Hopefully, you find your new favorite book on this list.

I’ve linked to some books that I thought were truly amazing, that I read more than once, or I think could help others. Those links are affiliate links, so if you decide to purchase them, I’ll get a small commission, as always, I only share links to things I’ve read and think are worth sharing.

Day 3312 – Being Sober – What Impacts Me Changes From Day To Day

My experiences with sobriety, thinking about my alcoholism, talking to others about experiences, and what causes me to get upset honestly changes from day to day. A few months back, I watched a Cinema Sins video about The Girl On The Train. I didn’t watch the movie because it had nudity, and the silly Cinema Sins videos give me an idea of what a movie was about without having to watch it. Turns out, the main character is an alcoholic. When I watched that video, I realized it really shook me, and I spiraled down with thoughts about my drinking and things that I did while drinking. It made me think – can I not watch, read, talk about other alcoholics?

And here I am, reading the book, The Girl On The Train, and instead of spiraling in my thoughts, I find myself impressed that the author could write an alcoholic so well. I’m asked a lot about how my sobriety impacts my life, from what it’s like to go into a liquor store to being around others drinking to just talking about my drinking days. In a lot of ways, things are pretty consistent, but sometimes, something that would have knocked me down for a few days doesn’t bother me at all.

I write all this to encourage you to be patient with your newly sober, longly sober, want to be sober friends. Dealing with alcohol and remembering our past changes from day to day. So don’t get upset if what bothers us one day is completely ok the next. Dealing with sobriety is a long, hard, wonderful process, and we need you to be there to support us – no matter what that means on any given day.
