About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 1943 – Bret Got Husband Points Today

One of the “secrets” of a marriage is to continually date and woo your spouse. Our alarm goes off at 5:45 every day. Most days, Bret will go through one snooze cycle. Some mornings I’ll go through 2-3. More often than not, Bret has been bringing me a cup of coffee for when I do get up. He tries to fake me out every morning….especially when I ask about coffee….it’ll take me a minute or two to realize I have a hot mug next to me.

This morning, I got up before he came back down. I walked into him writing me a post it note to go with my cup of coffee. πŸ™‚ This guy is the coolest.

Day 1942 – The Best Free Business Investment You Can Make

There are countless pieces of advice on business out there, on pretty much every topic and every type of business. There are systems, get rich quick schemes, books, webinars, conferences, etc. I have invested my fair share into all of these things. A lot more than I really should have, to be honest, so I hope knowing that, I know a little bit about what I’m talking about.

So, what is this magical free investment in your business? What can make all your dreams come true (if you get of your own way of course)?

Simple. The library. Hands down, this has been the best investment in my time and education AND my business over the last ten years. The amount of knowledge you can gain from a library is staggering. And I’ll bet I have an answer for your most common “complaints” about it.

Whining excuse reasoning – I don’t have time.
I’m sorry, but yes you do. You have so much more time than you realize. When you want to check Facebook, read a page in a book. Even reading one page in a book each day means you read a book or two a year. You find time for the things that are important to you. Ask yourself if your business and making money is more important than Facebook/Candy Crush/Clash of Clans/watching TV/whatever. This is especially true if you are the owner of a small business – your family is counting on YOU to eat, don’t let them down.

Whining excuse reasoning – My library is small.
Sorry again, so is mine. You can reserve books online and send them to your branch. I would say I’ve requested hundreds of books since I realized I could do this. It’s so convenient to put in the request and pick it up from my branch when I can. I do this online, but you can get help at your local branch from your librarian. Full disclosure – I used to drive to multiple branches to get the books I needed. What a waste of time and gas.

Whining excuse reasoning – I hate to read.
Answer? Books on tape. Again, use that requests feature. There are a ton of books on tape, fiction and non-fiction. This is especially helpful if you have a long commute. You can also listen to these while you’re on the treadmill walking/running.

Whining excuse reasoning – Reading books won’t help my business.
Over the last year, I’ve read several books that have completely changed my mindset, my business and my life. Through the knowledge I gained, I made big changes in my business that have increased my productivity and helped me to bring in more money….to the point that we can actually look into ways to SAVE our money! What a change from 2 years ago when Bret lost his job and we were living paycheck to paycheck!

Whining excuse reasoning – Any other excuse reason you may have.
Running a business isn’t easy. It takes a great deal of work, time, sacrifice, blood, sweat, tears, fights with your spouse, money….and the list goes on and on. There is not “get rich quick” answer to cancel out the hard work. If someone tells you there is, be very very wary. You’re probably making THEM rich and not yourself. You have to put in the time in different areas of your business. You have to read and you have to actually DO the things that are suggested in those books….if they line up with your business model, brand and target clients, of course.

What about you? What’s your excuse and how can I talk you into reading and using your library?

Bonus – you can get NEW DVD releases at the library too….for FREE. There will be a waiting list for the newest stuff (unless you put in a request early), but hey, a free movies add up! Even if you’re using Redbox!

Day 1941 – How I Stay Organized When There Is A Ton Going On

My goodness, I have a bunch going on right now! Being Bret’s secretary, running my photography business, helping my mom out around the house, personal projects, writing a book and tasks for a new long term client.

So what’s a girl to do? Why use the huge white board above her desk as a post it noter’s dream!

Viola! What I love about this method is I can move things around easily. I still have a printed to-do list but it’s slowly being replaced…..what can I say, I’m old school. πŸ™‚

Day 1940 – The Days Things Don’t Go As Planned And Then They Do

Well, we got up with plenty of time to go to church. No Daylight Savings Time got in our way! But for a number of reasons, we decided to stay home. We listened to a sermon online and just hung out. About half way through, we got a message that a family member was in distress. So we finished the sermon in the car and took care of it. We were planning on getting lunch with another family member, but since we were half way to where we were going to have lunch, it made sense to cancel. But we decided to go without them.

I mean, why NOT go to Broom’s Bloom when you get the chance?

After that we got a few things from Target. It’s been pretty cold in the basement, so these guys will help a lot!

And because I’m a 5 year old in a 32 year old’s body, I had to get this. I mean, hello, $1 at Target! I love reusable bags! πŸ™‚

Day 1939 – Ahhh, A Nice Saturday!

It was an all around good day for Bret and I. He got to chill most of the day and he’s hanging out with my broseph now (we call all of my brothers that….but it’s funnier when it’s actually Joseph that he’s hanging out with). I got a bit of work done, both personally and for others. Bret and I spent a few hours building another gazebo outside! It was a lot of fun working with Bret, listening to worship music and just chatting. I’m so glad we can work together!

This is a shot under the other gazebo my folks have….I didn’t take a picture of our progress at all! Bad photographer!
