About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2200 – When To Rob A Bank – or – A Nice Reminder About Why I Blog

We’ve made a lot of choices in our life over the last year or so that have severely simplified our lives. Because of the choices we’ve made, we have a lot of free time. Some days it’s tough to think of a blog topic because most of our days look like this:

Get up around 5:45/6
I listen to a sermon while Bret is getting ready for work 6-7
Bret goes to work, I finish a sermon or two 7-8
8-3/4ish
I do work for clients
I read
I blog
I might go for a walk or run or Dunkin’ run
I might play video games, depending on my work load
I clean up the apartment/do the wash, etc.
I might chat with a friend

Then when Bret gets home, we generally hang out in the evening. Typically, we’re watching movies or chatting on the porch.

If I was reading a blog about the above, I’d get bored. But I guess you guys don’t get bored, because I know you guys are reading!

As I was pondering what to write today, I came across a few quotes in a new book I’m reading – “When To Rob A Bank” by Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner (The guys who wrote Freakonomics). These quotes are from the introduction about the two writing a blog for ten years.

“But mostly, having the blog gave us good reason to stay curious and open about the world…All these years, we routinely asked ourselves why we kept blogging…It didn’t pay; there wasn’t any evidence the blog helped sell more copies of our book. In fact it may have cannibalized sales, since every day we were giving away our writing. But over time we realized why we kept at it: our readers liked reading the blog, and we loved our readers.”

I actually read the first sentence with a few tears. This blog has helped me to be aware of what’s going on around me each day. Since I’ve written the blog for over four years, it has become a habit and I feel “wrong” if I haven’t blogged for the day yet. It has helped me look at life and ask the question “what is the most cool, fun, important, life-changing thing that has happened to me today?”

Even when I think my life is a little “boring,” I can still find inspiration in a few lines of text. πŸ™‚

Day 2198 – First Trip To Bengie’s Of The Summer – Maryland’s Only Drive-In

If you need something fun to do with your family and friends in Maryland, you gotta check out Bengie’s Drive-In. Not only is it the last drive-in in Maryland, it’s also the biggest movie screen in the country!

If you haven’t been before, please make sure you take some time to read their rules online. They’re cash only and have a number of rules that help to make everyone’s experience more enjoyable. The staff is good at making sure the rules are enforced. Case in point – Bret was in the driver seat and causally put his foot on the break before the movie…within a few minutes, a staff member came over to ask him to stop. It is really distracting to have lights on. I’ll admit, the first time I went, I thought, WOW, there are a lot of rules and signs posted about them! But after going and hearing The Voice, it all made sense. The rules are there to make sure everyone has a good time, so I’m GLAD they have them! We have had a great time every time. So don’t be scared when you see the rules! πŸ™‚

Another reason you should check out Bengie’s is it’s a small business. I think it’s important to support them!

If you needed more reason, check this out….you can see at least 2 movies for $10 a person. That’s a steal. Even if you only stay for one movie, that’s still cheaper than a theater. The snacks are really affordable too. We spent about $20 throughout the night and we got – a medium soda, nachos, a soft pretzel, two extra sides of nacho cheese, two waters, cotton candy and a large coffee. Next time we need to try their burgers…which are around $4!

So, go to Bengie’s tonight or tomorrow night! Check out Ant-Man and Inside Out. Both are great films at a great location.

Day 2196 – What Happens When You’re Really, Really Quiet

Today I was working on the porch because the weather is AMAZING! I love cool days in July!

I had been sitting so long, someone came to investigate my porch…

I sat in silence watching this little guy. He kept looking at me, but not moving. Then he started to scratch his chest and it reminded me of a fat old man lounged out in front of the tv scratching his stomach. I stifled a laugh, but it was too loud and away ran my friend. But he left a chuckle on my lips. πŸ™‚

Shortly after, I saw a hummingbird flying nearby. I found myself thinking I might be Snow White….but none of the animals have offered to do my dishes, so I guess I’m still me. πŸ™‚
