About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2275 – “Do You Miss Wedding Photography?”

Since we decided to stop photographing weddings, the biggest question we get is “do you miss it?”

Things we miss:
– Meeting awesome new couples, their friends and family
– Creating images of day 1 for great couples
– Wedding food
– Dancing at weddings (there’s something about that one dance we would squeeze in, with all our camera gear on)
– Seeing how happy the bride and groom were on their wedding day
– Seeing how happy the bride and groom were when they see the pictures

Things we don’t miss:
– The stress of getting ready for, capturing everything and the weather
– Not getting to eat at the wedding (I can’t tell you how many our plates got taken away because we had to jump up to photograph something)
– Working on the weekend

Things that are awesome now that we don’t photograph weddings
– Almost every weekend is free
– I LOVE my new job working for amazing photographers
– Bret LOVES having only one job (at one point he had five jobs at once)
– Consistent income – Bret has a set income and mine is pretty consistent as well

But I do miss our behind the scenes photos…

Day 2272 – Life Lessons From Ground Turkey

Today I was going to prepare a lovely meal. Ground turkey, veggies and couscous. It is SO delicious. I had just come back from a run and was VERY hungry. Here’s the thing – it’s been CRAZY busy the last week or so. I kept telling myself, I gotta make this, I gotta make this. Well, I finally did. When I pulled out the ground turkey, I noticed that the “use by/freeze by” date was 9/21. Ok, let’s try this….opened them up…hmmm, maybe they’re not ok…but I’m going to start cooking it…called mom (because what else would you do in this situation?)….she told me to Google it (did NOT expect that!)….Google and company told me not go over the date by more than 1-2 days. Well, crap.

So, here’s what I learned:

– It is mind boggling how fast a garbage disposal can get rid of two pounds of ground turkey. I mean, WOW!
– Your apartment may smell somewhat nice after partially cooking two pounds of old ground turkey, but there will be just a slight nastiness to the smell.
– Because of the smell, you will need to open every window, turn on every fan and light a candle.
– Don’t put off cooking meals like this. Make them when you get home from the store or the very next day. Don’t. Let. It. Slide.
– You will still be hungry after all of this. Perhaps it’s time to go to Dunkin Donuts.
– At least your apartment will smell like strawberries after it’s all said and done.
– Bonus points if you’ve already planned on going on out for dinner.
