About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2611 – A Full Night Of Movies (Including GOONIES!) At Bengies – Maryland’s Only Drive-In

Tonight we are SO excited to FINALLY make it to the Dusk to Dawn event at Bengie’s Drive-in! Here’s what’s showing!

Pete’s Dragon, Star Trek Beyond, Kubo and the Two Strings, The Goonies. Nerve is also playing, but we’ll be taking off since it has nudity. 😦 But hey, four movies is probably going to be plenty!

I’m SOOOOOOOO excited to see Goonies on the big screen!

(old photo, obviously)

Day 2610 – Reposting The Best Day We’ve Had So Far (From 9/2/12!)

This day still holds as one of the better days we’ve had!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today was really the best day Bret and I have experienced so far. I mean, there have been a ton of good days, to be sure, but this was one of those….wow, this just gets better and better!
First, the sermon was AWESOME at church. It was on Luke 14:12-24 and the parable of the great banquet. There were a few things that really stuck out to me… first that Jesus is the master of the awkward moment. How he would ask questions that got to the heart of the matter and made people really uncomfortable. I mean, how comfortable are you with your sin? It doesn’t mean he’s trying to be a jerk and leave people in that uncomfortableness, it’s out of love to help us grow. It made me want to grow in making people uncomfortable like that.
Then we met up with Brian and Rebekah, our October 6th couple. We had lunch and then went to their venue, Deer Creek Overlook. We had so many awesome ideas for photographs and just had a super fun time getting to know each other.
After that, Bret and I headed down to Gunpowder Falls State Park – Big Gunpowder Falls Section off Bel Air Road. We’ll be taking engagement/family portraits for Kevin and Caitlin, our March 16th couple, there on Saturday.
The last location we scouted was Rocky Point Beach and Park in Essex. We’ll be taking engagement portraits in a few weeks.
I will post pictures from each location over the next few days…mostly because I didn’t want to overwhelm you with so many pictures!!
We were driving home and at the end of Rocky Point Road and saw a sign for Island View Waterfront Cafe. I pointed it out in a “hey, look at that, isn’t that neat?” and he said, “let’s go!” We don’t really go out a lot, so I was SUPER excited about it!
We got seats outside and this was our view…
It was just perfect. But then the wind picked up and we felt a few drops…but hoped it would pass…sadly, it started to rain, so we moved inside and this was our view!
I ordered cream of crab soup and it was amazing! One thing I notice in cream of crab soup is if there are “flour clumps that you think are crab.” I think that’s the WORST feeling….you think you’re getting this awesome lump of crab meat and ew no!! There were NO flour clumps! The soup was the perfect amount of creamy, but not too thick. There was a lot of big pieces of crab. AND (this is truly the BEST part of this restaurant) along with the regular salt and pepper shakers…there were OLD BAY SHAKERS on EVERY table! AH! As soon as I finished the soup I wished I had ordered a bowl instead of a cup. Ah! I washed it all down with a Fat Tire.
My meal was a shrimp salad sandwich on a croissant with lettuce and tomato! I also ordered mashed potatoes instead of fries. Old Bay on top of that was just perfect!
Another highlight was seeing two families that arrived and left BY BOAT. How cool is that??
If you’re interested in checking them out (which you TOTALLY should), here’s the specials they had listed on the door outside…I know I’ll be going back for those $1 and $2 crabs!
Day 2608 – A New Way To Drink Coffee
A few weeks ago, we spent the night at our friends’ house. They warned us that they drink their coffee a little different….they put in cinnamon and cayenne pepper for antioxidants. We were excited to try something new and, well, we adore it! We’ve made our coffee that way ever since. Bret has even been toying with measurements for the perfect blend. Me? I’m a little more, um, non-measurement in my preparations. It’s been a very tired day for me, so I decided to make a half pot of coffee to power through. I added in my version of measurements and booooooooy howdy, I added a lot of cayenne pepper! Hello antioxidants, I guess?
I definitely made this face on the first sip….
Day 2607 – 26 Things I’ve Learned And Love About Marriage
Wowie! 2600 days already, I thought it would be fun to compile 26 things I’ve learned and love about marriage in honor of such an anniversary!
1. I’ve learned that time goes by really fast – as Gretchen Rubin says – the days are long but the years are short. How true it is!
2. I’ve learned that it is amazing how much you change.
3. I’ve learned that it is amazing how much you stay the same.
4. I love having someone who accepts me as me, it is so comforting.
5. I love having someone who challenges me to grow in ways I need to. It really is a form of love.
6. I’ve learned it’s important to have fun together.
7. I’ve learned that you should find a husband who makes your coffee in the morning. (This may be the secret to our marriage right here)
8. I’ve learned you really get to know your spouse when you take a road trip together.
9. I’ve learned sometimes the best vacations are the ones where you hide out in your home.
10. I’ve learned it’s important to be your spouse’s best friend.
11. I’ve learned it’s extremely important to share things with your spouse first.
12. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t hold on too tightly to the dream that your spouse will wear the same ring you put on his finger 2600 days ago.
13. I love that blogging every day about our marriage helps us remember things we’d forgotten about.
14. I’ve learned that this marriage business is very serious.
15. I’ve learned it’s really fun to read a book in like a day and suggesting your spouse read it and he does in a few days (I’m looking at you Ready Player One).
16. I love how living a minimalist life together has made room for a much richer and fuller life.
17. I’ve learned that Bret is a really good dish washer.
18. I’ve learned that I am way more selfish than I realized.
19. I’ve learned that one of the best gifts you can give your spouse is acceptance, but encouragement to grow when they’ve fallen for the millionth time. I am floored by how Bret loved me through the many awful experiences of my alcoholism.
20. I love that marriage just gets better and better.
21. I love that we’ve grown together.
22. I love that there are still things we don’t know about each other.
23. I love that Bret encourages me to follow my dreams.
24. I love that marriage has made me a better person.
25. I’ve learned that lots of things change in life.
26. I’ve learned that, I just love being married to Bret. πŸ™‚
This is us on like Day 2, 3 or 4.
