Day 3413 – How A Song You’ve Heard Thousands Of Times Can Have A New Meaning

As I was running today, listening to Firebreather by Thrice (my running song of choice), I was struck by a new thought. Here are a few lines from the song, you can read the full lyrics here.

Tell me, Are you free
When the fear falls on you?
Tell me, Are you free
When the fear falls on you?

The song was written about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who spoke up about the injustices he saw in Nazi Germany. It has always resonated with me.

It has always been about someone who is killed for their belief. That belief has always been Christianity in my mind.

But this morning, as I was mid-run, it struck me that it can also be about speaking up about things that others shy away from for whatever reason. It brought me comfort to know that I rarely shy away from speaking up about things.

It gave me fresh encouragement to share that it’s OK to not drink, that you can have a full and wonderful and FUN life without alcohol.

That it’s ok to not have kids.

That it’s ok to sleep on the floor.

That it’s ok to not have furniture in the “normal” sense.

To shout from my little blog rooftop, that it’s ok if you are different from most of those around you. It’s ok if most people think you’re crazy. To remind you that there ARE others out there who think and feel like you do.

It may take time to find them, but I assure you, they are out there.

Day 3375 – Photos From Our Thrice Concert

Whooooo, what a great concert! Bret and I are both feeling our age after being in the mosh pit, to be sure. It was the longest set we’ve seen them play and they were amazing as always.

The mosh pit was a good one and the guys weren’t jerks and looked out for me.

We didn’t know/weren’t that interested in the first two bands, so we found our way to the upstairs. We got a great view to the side of the stage. I got to chatting with the security guard, and she actually let me get even close for this epic shot. After this, I headed down to the pit.

Day 3374 – Our Sixth Thrice Concert Tonight!!!!

I’ve have absolutely loved Thrice for years. I can’t remember who introduced me to them, or the exact year/album I started listening. But they have become the soundtrack of my life. Their songs are so deep and have so many meanings.

When I married Bret, in many ways, I had NO idea what I was in for in that I gained so much more than I expected. I gained a business partner, my very best friend, and a fellow Thrice lover.

Today we are attending our sixth Thrice concert (my seventh) and I just can’t wait! It’s so much fun to mosh together, sing along together, and just all around enjoy this amazing band. If you haven’t listened to them yet, please please please check them out. Specifically – Firebreather, For Miles, The Artist In The Ambulance, Image of the Invisible, In Exile, Beggars, Come All You Weary, and Phoenix Ignition.

I doubt we’ll get muddy like this again, but you know we’ll be sweaty messes after the pit!

Day 3253 – 123 Days To Seeing These Guys Again! (Maybe Less!)

Since learning Thrice is putting out a new album and touring in the fall, I’ve been listening to them non-stop. I was a little worried I wouldn’t get to see them this year because of their touring schedule and our travel plans. But everything aligned and I’ll get to see them at least once (likely twice!) this year.

Do you have a band that you’ve seen a bajillion times?

Day 2898 – How A Concert Taught Me I Am Getting Older – or – Mini Review Of The Deftones/Rise Against/Thrice Tour

I had this vision of how to spend my 35th birthday – at a concert, moshing. What better way to say “screw you” to a mid-life crisis than by rocking out? I wanted to see Thrice on their summer tour with Deftones and Rise Against. The show on my birthday (happening tomorrow) is taking place in Raleigh, NC. We were waiting to see if Bret closed a deal before we booked anything, ha ha, to see if we had money to go! We ended up nixing all overnight traveling, and decided to spread out the “celebration money” and do more things locally. I even saved a few bucks on the tickets. So we decided to go to the show in at the new MGM casino in National Harbor. I have to say, it’s a beautiful place! Parking was super easy (and free) and there were lots of signs leading the way to the theater.

After Thrice played, we decided to walk around a little bit. While Rise Against is all well and good, we were like, Eh. We found our way to a big, outdoor deck with a colored water fountain, overlooking the harbor. The night was perfect. A warm breeze. Ah, so peaceful.

After hanging outside for a bit, we went back in for the last song of the Rise Against set, and then Deftones. I thoroughly enjoyed their set! They were such a big part of my late teens/early 20’s. I even got goosebumps when they played Change (In The House Of Flies). Amazing show.

But, there was another side, a side I don’t like to admit – I’m getting older.

During the Thrice set, we saw the mosh pit, and headed over. Upon arriving at the circle, instead of watching for a minute or two to get a feel for the vibe and intensity, I hopped right in.
Barely 10 seconds passed before I was on the floor.
I hopped up, ready to keep going, nope, sorry lady, you’re back on the floor.
Hopped up again, oh, hello again floor!

Probably best that I was humbled so quickly, or else I’d be more beat up. I still enjoyed the set, and I love hanging out on the side of the pit. It’s nice and open, and you only have a few people running into you.

As we sat in between sets, I realized, wow, I already have a bruise.

The next day, we were able to sleep in, and upon waking I felt like an elephant had stepped on me.

I spent the day hobbling around, complaining about my sore neck…and body.

I was so not with it, that I dropped almost half a bag of floss picks on the floor. I just looked at them, then at Bret, and said “I can’t adult today!”

I took multiple naps and lay downs.

In some ways, I felt like I was recovering from a hangover. That’s something I haven’t done in almost 3 years!

My ears were ringing all day.

Dudes, I’m actually getting older. Now, to be fair, I did throw myself into an arena of guys twice my size, who were pushing each other around. But still, I’m getting older! I really don’t mind getting older, there’s a part of me that’s looking forward to all the senior discounts and freebies, but the past few days were the first time I realized that my body will show my age too.

All that to say, I can’t think of a better way to age, than by rocking out. 🙂
