Day 2523- Why Live A Minimalist Life?

We started living a minimalist life through a series of decisions that really had no larger purpose in mind. We started sleeping on the floor because it felt better on Bret’s back. We didn’t get a bed for our apartment because we didn’t have a truck. We didn’t keep things that didn’t fit in the car because we were curious to see how that would work. It really seems like a backwards way of getting to where we are now.

After we made these decisions, we thought about the why. Why are we not keeping things? Why are we getting rid of so much? It really came down to living as sojourner’s in this world. We believe this world is not our home. We’re just passing through. Why settle down if this isn’t the final destination?

Another question we get when we encourage others to live this way is ‘what are you filling your time with? Why cut care of things out?’ (i.e. not having a lawn to cut, etc) It’s something we’ve been pondering recently. We’re big on seriously considering our decisions. When someone asks us why about a decision we make, we take the time to rethink our position and choices.

So, I knew we had the sojourner reason. But I discovered another reason this morning, or I should say, I was able to put words to another why while listening to a John Piper sermon on prayer. He referenced Matthew 6:25-34 (see below) about the birds of the air not worrying because God takes care of them. So why don’t we worry and think about worldly concerns? So we can seek the kingdom of God. That is a big reason why we do what we do and live why we live – to have more time and brain space to learn about God. To dwell on his word and what it means for our lives. We have created an environment in our home where we aren’t distracted by cleaning lots of things or having to take care of lots of material things – so that we can sit back, relax and meditate on God.

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. ‘Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.‘” Matthew 6:25-34

Day 1903 – Starting A New Journey

Today when Bret came home from school, we talked about a few things and we were freshly reminded of something that should be so obvious.

We HAVE to pray together. I’m being honest here and not saying we need to pray more. We are woefully failing in this regard.

As a Christian couple, we believe that our relationship with Christ, both individually and as a couple, is so important to the success of our marriage. We cannot do this “marriage thing” without God. With this fresh reminder, we have set a goal to pray and do devotions every morning and every evening. Tonight was such a sweet time of prayer about different things we’re walking through as well as some great reminders in the things we read.

We are going to read the Duck Commander devotional…um, how long have we owned that?! (Insert all knowing, forever preserved blog post proof – purchased on Day 1651, how many days have we read together? ummmm, yea…)
We are also going to read Morning and Evening by Charles Spurgeon.

I’m excited to see where this journey takes us! So what about you? What devotionals do you do with your spouse? Comment below and let us know what to read next!

Day 1233 – Praying With Open Hands

I’ve been wanting to write this post for a while. Months, probably. And it’s on the topic of prayer.

I thought this would be a post on how we’ve been praying specific prayers. But as I was writing, I realized it’s more about praying with open hands.

As you might expect, one of my consistent prayers is for more business….but over the last year, it’s changed. I will ask for business, but I will add, if it’s Your Will. I pray for financial security, if it’s His Will. I ask for growth, in whatever means it takes.

The theme that continues to run through my prayers really comes down to giving my requests to my Lord and leaving them there.

It’s holding my business up to Him, but with open hands. It’s understanding that at ANY moment, it can all be taken away.

And can I tell you, it is so freeing. It is so peaceful. Knowing that He knows EVERYTHING, so I don’t need to worry or question the WHY.

I am in a situation now that I never expected I would be in a year ago. And yet, I’m the most joyful and peaceful I’ve ever been. I’m so thankful for how God has changed me in that way.

So, open your hands, hold loosely to what you ask for. His hands are safer.

And since I can’t really share a picture of “prayer” I will share a picture of clouds. I always think of prayer when there are pretty clouds. 🙂
