Day 3427 – repost – “Can You Go Into Bars?” “Can You Hang Out With People Drinking?” And Other Common Questions About My Sobriety

I’ve shared my story about struggling with alcoholism before. It’s common knowledge that I don’t drink. I want to say at the start that everyone has a different experience with sobriety, alcoholism, etc. This is just MY experience and what it’s like for me. Don’t take this post as a “oh my friend doesn’t drink, so this will apply to them!”

I, thankfully, experience almost zero temptation and struggle with drinking. The only reason for this is God’s work in my life. This is not a will power thing. It’s all God.

Ok, let’s jump right in!

“Can you go into bars?”
Yes! I love hanging out with my friends and bars are a great place to do it. Happy hour specials can be fantastic! It’s a cheaper bill for me either way! πŸ™‚ I will say, there are some times, especially when I went to Padonia Station/Ale House a few weeks ago, that I think about memories (ha ha, or non-memories) of my drinking experiences. I joked with one of my friends there, oh yea, I remember throwing up in that bathroom and that one. Fun fact, I was driving home from Padonia Station the night I was arrested for a DUI. So, I will say, there are SOME times that I think about these things. But it doesn’t make me sad or make me want to not go to a bar. It makes me SO thankful that God did not leave me where I was. Thankful that God had mercy on me during those times and kept me safe.

“Can you hang out with people drinking?”
Yep! If anything, I may be a bad influence to those who are drinking….I get drinks when they need them…this is especially true if I’m driving. Again, not everyone has the same experience with drinking. Some people can actually control themselves and not make a mess of things. I am not one of those people! So, I’ll just drive the ones that can! πŸ™‚

“Are you tempted to drink?”
I would say, there might be a little temptation here and there. Bret has a box of wine in the fridge right now and I’ve had the passing thought – “I’m an adult, I can decide to drink a glass, I’d be fine.” But since I’m sober when I’m thinking this, I realized, um, no, I’d not be fine. My biggest weakness was after that first glass, I’d HAVE to have as much as possible. So, any time I feel a slight temptation, God very graciously reminds me of what I gave up.

“Will you ever drink again?”
No. I have no intention of drinking again. There is absolutely no reason for me to do so. I can celebrate with friends with a can of coke just as much as a shot or glass of wine. I can go to Ireland and tour the Guinness factory and not have a drink (one day soon, I’ll share about my first brewery tour – which was actually the brewer of the last beer I drank). It was making this decision that finally sealed my sobriety. Every time I would “quit” before, I would find an excuse to drink down the road. So, no, no more alcohol for me.

Are there any questions I didn’t answer, let me know in the comments and I’ll do another post!

And for lack of a photo that really fits, here’s a “shine” that I do drink. πŸ™‚ (oh my, I crack myself up)

Day 2930 – I’ve Always Wanted To Do That – or – Did You Save Your Money? – or – How To Save For A Road trip

One year ago today, I posted a blog titled – How To Go From β€œI’ve Always Wanted To Do That!” To β€œI Did That!”. I detailed a good budget for a road trip, very close to what Bret and I did and spent last summer. I also gave a challenge – save $40 a paycheck for 2 years. If you did that, you would have enough saved for a road trip very similar to the one we took. So, I have to ask you, did you save your $40 a check this past year? If you did, you’d have $1,040 saved for your trip. $40 might sound like a big number, but it’s really not, that’s $20 a week, $2.86 a day. What small purchases are you making each week that add up to this? If you said no to a coffee or a meal, you could take your trip.

I’ll check back with you about this next year, where I hope you’ve saved $1,040…..or $2,080. πŸ™‚

Day 2527 – Repost – Love To Travel, But Don’t Have The Money? – or – How We’re Flying To California For Free (Almost)

This was originally posted February 27, 2015.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We LOVE to travel!! I don’t think we realized how much until we had more money to do so!
Before this Christmas, we tended to take the super cheap ways in travel. We’d have to get a lower grade room or sleep in our car. We even had to cut our honeymoon short. Being in debt for so long, finally paying it off and Bret landing a teaching job has radically changed our financial situation.
We’ve splurged a little over the past few months with travel and eating out. I told you a few days back that we’re taking a weekend trip to go to a concert. While booking the hotel, I realized, you know, I just learned a LOT of great tips for saving on flights…I should share that!
A few months back, we finally signed up for a Southwest credit card. I think it’s one of the better rewards credit cards out there…especially if you fly even a little.
I lucked out and signed up during a promotion; if you spend $2000 within your first 90 days, you’ll get 50,000 bonus miles.
We hope to hit that number pretty soon. What I love about the Southwest Credit Card so far is how easy it is to earn miles and opportunities for bonus miles.
A particularly awesome way to rack up the points is Rocketmiles (clicking on this link and booking a hotel will give me bonus miles, for full-disclosure). This is a way to earn rapid rewards through booking hotels. I just booked our hotel for the concert and will get a bonus 5,000 miles! I mean, that’s like spending $5000 on my credit card! So, just by booking a hotel through the website (which we needed anyway), I’m getting miles.
Let me give a practical example.
You earn 1 mile for every dollar spent on your purchases. You’ll get 2 miles for every dollar spent through Southwest and their travel partners (hotels and car rentals). I’ve noticed they send a ton of other ways to get bonus miles too. Before Valentine’s Day, they had an offer for bonus miles if you ordered flowers through 1-800 flowers.
Now let’s break down your potential based on your normal cost of living expenses. Since this can range depending on a million factors, I’m going to just use $2000 as a starting point. I’ll also use our typical travel as well.
Yearly expenses amount – $24,000 i.e. 24,000 points
Our bonus for signing up and spending the amount required on the new credit card – 50,000 miles
Our bonus for booking a hotel through Rocketmiles (clicking on this link and booking a hotel will give me bonus miles, for full-disclosure) – 5,000 miles
Rough estimate of cost of tickets to California at Christmas time for two – $1,100
Rough estimate of points for California at Christmas time for two – 76,578 miles
Rough cost of tickets to California at Christmas time after using points – $22.00
Total miles earned – 79,000
Miles left over after booking flight – 2,422
Cost to visit family for Christmas – $22
What about you? Do you have any money saving travel tips??
Day 2523- Why Live A Minimalist Life?
We started living a minimalist life through a series of decisions that really had no larger purpose in mind. We started sleeping on the floor because it felt better on Bret’s back. We didn’t get a bed for our apartment because we didn’t have a truck. We didn’t keep things that didn’t fit in the car because we were curious to see how that would work. It really seems like a backwards way of getting to where we are now.
After we made these decisions, we thought about the why. Why are we not keeping things? Why are we getting rid of so much? It really came down to living as sojourner’s in this world. We believe this world is not our home. We’re just passing through. Why settle down if this isn’t the final destination?
Another question we get when we encourage others to live this way is ‘what are you filling your time with? Why cut care of things out?’ (i.e. not having a lawn to cut, etc) It’s something we’ve been pondering recently. We’re big on seriously considering our decisions. When someone asks us why about a decision we make, we take the time to rethink our position and choices.
So, I knew we had the sojourner reason. But I discovered another reason this morning, or I should say, I was able to put words to another why while listening to a John Piper sermon on prayer. He referenced Matthew 6:25-34 (see below) about the birds of the air not worrying because God takes care of them. So why don’t we worry and think about worldly concerns? So we can seek the kingdom of God. That is a big reason why we do what we do and live why we live – to have more time and brain space to learn about God. To dwell on his word and what it means for our lives. We have created an environment in our home where we aren’t distracted by cleaning lots of things or having to take care of lots of material things – so that we can sit back, relax and meditate on God.
Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, β€˜What shall we eat?’ or β€˜What shall we drink?’ or β€˜What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. ‘Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.‘” Matthew 6:25-34
