Day 1214 – La Cakerie, Jason Hisley And A Place For All Who Love Bacon, Cheese, Cupcakes and Bread

You might remember Jason Hisley from my post about him being on Sweet Genuis, or from Flavor Cupcakery or from stopping by his new shop, La Cakerie.

I met Jason through Flavor Cupcakery and officially at his Sweet Genius viewing party. We’re now Facebook friends…and that makes me feel like I know a celebrity. 🙂 I was invited to the opening of La Cakerie on Saturday…but just couldn’t make it out. I FINALLY made it by his new shop today! It worked out really well, because I was able to pick up Bret from school so we could try it together. I do want to point out that there is parking behind the shop! Wish I’d known before we paid to park…it was only a buck, but still….that’s another buck we could have spent in his store!

Ok, first impressions here…..I wanted to buy everything. I was drooling. Oooing and aaaaahing for about 5 minutes. It took us forever to make a decision. Check out the spread!

Yes, you read that right….Maple Bacon Donut. Hold on…there’s more…

So with all these wonderful choices, what did we get you ask? Here’s a picture….after we started digging in…

We got a soft pretzel with cheese, a HUGE cinnamon roll with the most AMAZING cream cheese icing and the Maple Bacon Donut. We also got a loaf of bread, not pictured, but just as delish.

Now you might be thinking, um, how was that donut? It was actually pretty amazing! Great combination of seemingly opposite tastes. I honestly couldn’t get over how perfectly they went together. The pretzel and cinnamon roll were just amazing.

So, what are you waiting for?? Go check them out! Here’s what they look like from the outside.

Their address is 49 W Chesapeake Ave, Towson, MD 21204 and their hours are 7am-7pm Monday through Saturday.

Day 1213 – The Best Auto Repair Shop In Towson Maryland

A few days ago, my car started a mini-hesitation when it started…and then my headlights were dimming a little when I would drive. This morning, Bret attempted to start the car and it was a struggle. So we decided to take it in for a check up. I was worried driving down, because while finances aren’t terrible right now, we don’t have a ton of disposable income. Turns out I just had some water log action going on. This seems to be a common problem after the hurricane. I also saw a TON of people come in for tires with screws/nails/etc in them. Something I NEVER would have thought about, but it makes total sense.

I did need tires though…something I’ve been putting off for a little while. Now here’s where we get to why I LOVE Hollenshade’s in Towson, Maryland. Instead of the typical scenario I’m used to in a car repair shop….a long list of things that need to be done and a big bill….they tell me what they recommend and if I ask, well, how long can I “get away without doing it” they’ll give me an honest response. Today it was a until the first snow. Since we’re pretty close to winter AND there was an offer for a $50 gift card if you purchased 4 tires AND my hubby thought it was a good idea….we went ahead and got them. They are some nice looking tires too!

Another reason I like them is there is a family atmosphere while you’re there. Asking customers about things going on in their lives (did so and so have her baby yet? How did the move go?). It is a family owned business since 1939…and you can really tell. 🙂

I also got a free calendar! Thanks Hollenshade’s!

Day 1209 – Remembering Scott

Today I wanted to honor a very dear friend. I met Scott through mutual friends at church and became close. He was one of those people that you LOVED to be around….whether he was cracking jokes that made you laugh so much you wanted to cry….giving you a hug that took your breath away…or showing you what true serving meant…or having a serious conversation. He was an amazing man. Much older than his years, to be sure. I have many memories of Scott, but two stand out in my mind and I always share when I talk about Scott.

First, I was hanging out with a bunch of my friends and then most everyone went to go watch a movie. I hung out in the kitchen with my boyfriend at the time and Scott. Why the kitchen? Well, Scott had an apron on and was doing all of the dishes. It was just the coolest thing. He is still an example to me of serving other people, without being asked. What makes me laugh when I think back to this story is that he was wearing the apron. It convicts me, even now, that I didn’t offer to help.

Second, there was a time he was doing a street outreach in Chicago and was talking to a homeless man. Scott told him you should go to church. The man said, I would, but I never know what time it is. Scott stopped, and took off his watch and gave it to the man. I heard this story second hand, but I can still picture exactly what the scene would have looked like.

My dear friend Scott was taken from this world ten years ago today. He was so young, in his first year of college. I wish that he hadn’t been taken from my life so soon. I wish he could have met Bret. I wish he could have attended my wedding. I wish I could have hugged him when I found out I would finally be a full time photographer. But losing him changed my life and I still feel the effects. Losing Scott made me embrace every day with joy, realizing I am NEVER promised tomorrow. The Ray Bradbury quote, “Stuff your eyes with wonder, live as if you’d drop dead in ten seconds.” comes to life in me because of Scott. It also helped me get through Bret being deployed to Iraq. Because I had accepted so long before that life was short and never promised, I could honestly say, “He’ll come back to me or he won’t and that’s ok” and TRULY mean it. I mean, it was difficult, but I believe that it would have been almost unbearable if I hadn’t experienced loss.

But, for now I will remember…”He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Rev 21:4) On that day I will get the best Scott hug ever.

Day 1208 – Completed Hurricane Puzzle

Ok, I’ll be 100% honest with my dear readers. The puzzle was actually finished on November 1st, but I have a special post scheduled, so I’m posting the finished puzzle today. It was finished at about 3 p.m. on November 1st even though I realllllly tried to finish it on October 31st….Just count it as my Halloween trick 😉

Here is the completed 2000 piece puzzle. Everyone helped and it was a great time…when the power was on and when it was off.

To give you an idea of scale…I put a DVD on the puzzle. Also, the puzzle is resting on a coffee table AND an ottoman.
