Day 2577 – Heartbroken

Today, my heart is so heavy. Last night, the amazing historic Ellicott City was flooded and experienced extensive damage. I mean, unbelievable damage. A quick search online will show it. I am filled with many emotions about this for many reasons. We live just under 2 miles away. It is crazy something like this happened so close. I took a walk around our apartment complex this morning and there was some minor evidence of flooding last night but mostly just displaced garbage and grass against cars. As I started this post, I tried to find photos I’d taken in my many visits there….I had none. Not even plates of food. I may have some buried and not tagged well on this blog but it was still a sad thing. I’ve had coffee at several places, had drinks and tacos. So many memories. It also brought up memories of our very near death experience in the Gunpowder River. I’ve watched videos, looked at pictures and just wept.

As I was scrolling through my Facebook feed as well, I was struck by all of the other tragedies people are experiencing. Some far away, some as close as two miles away. It reminded me how many hurt and broken people there are and reminded me to be kind when someone has an attitude with me. When someone doesn’t return your smile or your wave, just remember, you have no idea what they’re going through.

Day 2573 – Take Your Houseplant For A Walk Day

Let me say from the outset, I have been SO excited for this day! One of the things I do for my “day jobs” is a little social media. I found a few websites that list fun “days.” Two months ago, I was going through the upcoming months to help plan. What did I find? Oh yes, take your houseplant for a walk day! So I did.

I started by taking them on a walk to Bret’s head. This is Spike.

And this is Stumpy.

They did devotions with me.

I let them play outside for a while.

I’m also a multi-tasker….so my little guys went on my run this morning. Thankfully today was an interval day, so I was able to pause and not throw off my pace.

Don’t worry, I clean up after my plants.

I showed them my favorite place in the neighborhood.

They took a quick break…I mean, they are REALLY out of shape!

I gave them some inspiration.

I let them play.

Then I let them climb. Stumpy is a little afraid of heights, not my Spike though!

They really liked this spot, they complained when I picked them up. :/

They got to see some wildlife.

They liked hanging out in this tree.

They gave me some big hugs for the trip.

Poor guys are all tuckered out now.

Day 2570 – Finally Getting Things Done

For about a year, I’ve been meaning to do a few things. Since I stopped photographing weddings, I wasn’t maintaining my Facebook page. I created new pages for new ventures (a new website, a new Facebook page, etc.) but they all were pretty much placeholders. I ended up going on lots of adventures, worked new jobs and just put them on the back burner.

This week, I feel like I finally caught up on a few things. I felt fully “back” after vacation, I typed up my notes from Essentialism and created my personal essential categories in life. I have been doing so many things I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. I’ve almost completely transitioned my to do list into Asana and off of my iCloud calendar. Now, that’s just for events. Ahhh, just the sense of relief at getting these things done is amazing.

Well, today, I finally updated my blog header, description, avatar and Facebook page to reflect the new direction of the blog. I say new, but it’s been here for about a year. I even put up a post on my photography business page.

So here we are, updated blog and in some ways, updated life.

As I created the new header, I was reminded that I am in no way a graphic designer, but I love that Jenny Lake is my header. 🙂

Day 2569 – Two Benefits Of Being A Minimalist

I love living a minimalist life. It was one of those things that came out of nowhere but it makes complete sense for our lives. In the last few days, two experiences stood out that made me want to write this post.

First, the apartment was a little messy and impeding my ability to work. It was still morning and I wanted to get to work. So I set a timing for 10 minutes. In TEN minutes I cleaned the apartment. Not a “shoved everything into a box or a drawer” cleaned but actually straightened up. Since we have so little, everything has a place and it’s easy to get it there.

Second, I was able to spend about 3 hours last night finishing a book. I read about half of the book in pretty much one sitting. Now, this is more a time freedom thing, but I think it still goes along with our minimalist life. Because my responsibilities are light in the home and in life too really and I can carve out time on a Friday night to finish a book. It is amazing freedom.

What about you? Are you living a minimalist life? Even if it’s just one aspect of your life. What are the benefits you’ve found?

This is the book I finished last night. Great story by the way, I can’t wait to get the next book. This guy also write The Grimm Sisters series.
