Day 2809 – One Of The Most Important Things You Can Do For Your Business And Yourself…Networking

I’m a big proponent of personal development. One thing I see that’s a big benefit to business owners is networking. Especially certain types of networking groups. I’m a part of a great networking/brainstorming group. It’s filled with like minded entrepreneurs. I always come away with great ideas and ways I can help other people. After I finish this post, I have a list of folks to email with things that I thought of but didn’t have time to tell them about their businesses.

If you’re looking for a good networking group, know that it takes work to find a great one. It takes commitment to making it a priority to attend. It also takes following your gut and leaving one that doesn’t work for you.

Do you agree? Do you think networking is one of the most important things you can do for your business and yourself? Let me know in the comments below!

I got this shot on my way to my car. I love downtown Baltimore. 🙂

Day 2790 – Crying In The Coffee Shop – or – Officially An Author

I am sitting in the coffee shop, crying. Neither of things is out of the ordinary, but the reason today is new. I am officially a paid author. I realized I published my book* in December, but today I got my first payment for book sales. I also got my first payment for being an affiliate partner with Amazon. I officially made money while I’ll slept. It is so awesome to see the physical, er, digital statement, of a few of my goals. I found myself feeling the same way I did when I saw my book in person for the first time. Utterly overwhelmed. I’m so thankful for the spark in my soul to write and share my experiences. I’m so thankful that others are interested in reading what I’ve written. Thank you to those who have purchased my book, read my blog, or clicked on an Amazon link* and made a purchase. Y’all encourage me to keep going.

And to those who have dreams, continue to chase them!

Day 2787 – 5 Habits Every Aspiring Reader Should Develop

I have a current personal goal of reading 300 books this year. Before you think that’s crazy, I’m thinking the majority of the books, probably about 200-250 will be children’s books. I’ve read 64 books this year and only 11 have been “grown up” books. I love to read and I love to encourage others to read. So, I wanted to give you some of my habits to read more.

My Top 5 Habits Every Aspiring Reader Should Develop

1 – Have a Goodreads account and app on your phone. This amazing website and app has helped me find new books, track what I’ve read, what I want to read, and get an idea if a book I’m thinking of reading will be something I would enjoy.
2 – Have a “To Be Read List” – I use Goodreads for this. Using the app, I can scan a book and quickly add it to my to be read list. I also took my account a step further and added two shelves – to be read fiction and to be read non-fiction. This way, if I’m at the library, I can quickly look through my current 390 books on either list.
3 – Have a set time that you read. Maybe it’s 15 minutes before bed. Maybe it’s while you drink your cup of coffee. Whenever it is, keep that date.
4 – Have a location where you love to read. This is especially helpful if the location is really comfortable. I’ve mentioned before my favorite spot is curled up under the heating vent.
5 – Read books that you love. Don’t read books you think you HAVE to read because everyone says you have to read them. Also, don’t feel like you HAVE to finish the book. As hard as it is to give up another check mark on my goal of books, there are times when I’m not feeling a book and I stop reading.
5a – Do a reading challenge. This year I’ve already read some books I never would have thought to read if I wasn’t participating in a reading challenge.

What do you think of my list? What ways do you cultivate a reading habit?

Day 2771 – A Lesson In Marketing From Past Jennilyn’s Mistakes

I’ve been relying on income from freelance sources for some or all of my income for over 12 years now. I’ve learned so much since I started, from how to use my photography gear, to how to use different editing software, to how to code a website, to how to market. You know I regularly check my previous year’s posts on Facebook. I see soooooo many statuses with me saying “like my Facebook page,” “check out my website,” in so many words, my Facebook feed screamed “BUY FROM ME!!!!!!!” I am so embarrassed by past Jennilyn. I’ve learned you don’t get raving fans from shoving your wares down potential clients throats. You get raving fans by sharing great content that is important to them. I sure hope I learn this lesson from past Jennilyn as I jump into new ventures. I hope I am more concerned with getting my messages to people that need to hear it than trying to get everyone to listen.

What about you, have you ever made a really embarrassing marketing mistake in your past?

Day 2767 – Repost – What Should You Do With Your Life? (The PJs Go With The Post, Really!)

Today ended up being one of those days where I ran around ALL day. Oy. Since this chick is way tired, I’m resharing a post from two years ago. Enjoy!

~~~~~~~
I was going to post Bret’s story about his two year long journey to attempting a Guinness World Record twice. I even reread his story, edited it down (just a little), emailed it to him to review at school as a last check. That was going to be the post today.
But then something happened.
I’m listening to an amazing two week event. It’s called On the Road and Making Money (you can probably still sign up if this interests you!) So far I’ve heard about a half dozen calls and have garnered some really great advice. It’s set a fire under my butt to make big changes in my life and my business. It’s given me ideas for one of my clients. It’s only the first week and it’s already been life changing.
Today, I listened to a rebroadcast called “Take Your Business on the Road to Explode Your Ecstatic Brand and Attract High-Paying Clients” by Christina Morassi. My biggest takeaway was this – it is ok to be you and to share that in your business. I found myself listening with tears streaming down. My journey has definitely been on the road to fully embracing ME and not apologizing for it. It was more of a “preaching to the choir” talk.
It was awesome to be reminded it’s ok that:
  • I love to have a stack of 29 books from the library, 2 on hold and requests for 2 more (my current numbers).
  • That I LOVE puzzles and have completed over 700 on the Jigsaw World app on Facebook. (I listen to sermons/webinars/etc. while putting together puzzles, so it’s not ALWAYS indulging in fun just for fun.)
  • That I get giddy excited about PivotTables and Excel spreadsheets.
  • That I wear adult footed PJs.
  • That I cry at beer commercials.
  • That I would drive across the country and not take a shower until Nevada.
  • That I get so into non-fiction books about research studies it’s like I’m reading an intense fiction novel.
  • That I can get my heart broken, but still love on someone.
  • That Christ and following Him is the number one thing in my life. Even if it turns people off or causes me to “sacrifice” things/people/whatever.
So today, I want to encourage you to fully embrace who you are. Every single aspect of you makes you wonderful and uniquely YOU! It is OK to be you!
“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11
