Day 3182 – “I Have The Worst Job Ever” – or – Perspective – repost

While driving today, I passed a road crew picking up trash and noticed the porta potty on a truck following them. My first thought was “man, it must stink (no pun intended) having a job like that.” But almost as quickly, I started thinking how it might be an answer to prayer for those on the crew. Typically, I think of road crews like that as those who are on work release or it’s part of their prison sentence to do this type of work. If that’s the case, then working outside is an AMAZING opportunity!

It seems to be an easy thing for people to complain about their job.
If you work in production, you wish you worked in the office.
If you work in the office, you wish you could get up and move around from your desk.
If you work as the secretary, you wish you were the boss.
If you work in an office, you wish you worked from home.

But I think we forget that there are two sides to every story….and every job.

So I give a plea – enjoy where you are in your job. Don’t complain. Understand that there are those who would be so grateful for what you have.

But if you do desire more, take action. I’ll leave you with a quote from one of my current reads:

“Mediocrity comes from the Latin words medius, meaning middle, and ocris, meaning rugged mountain. Literally translated, it means to settle halfway to the summit of a difficult mountain. It’s a compromise of abilities and potential; a negotiation between the drive to excel and the biological urge to settle for the most comfortable option.”

Day 3175 – Way Back Wednesday – Behind The Scenes: Murphy Wedding – repost

I had every intention of posting something else today (I thought I hit 500 books read on Goodreads and I logged in to get my profile link only to realize I was off by two books, doh!), and I got hit with a cold (again….come on Maryland with your crazy weather). So you’re getting something I posted five years ago today. We had such fun working as wedding photographers. It is an amazing part of our story as a couple and as business owners. There are aspects that I miss, like all the new people we got to meet and work with, the great food, and the behind the scenes photos. 🙂 Enjoy this little walk down memory lane.

Day 3172 – Advice On Working With Your Spouse In A Small Business – repost

Crazy that I posted this over five years ago and 1,901 days ago….and now we’re running another business together. While there have been some challenges with me having several clients of my own, but it’s still been great to build something together. 🙂

Yesterday, I alluded to a business Bret is starting…..

He is starting a personal training business!!! It’s a little different than most personal training businesses out there, but it’s really exciting! I’ll let him describe that for you. He’s still working on getting his Twitter/Facebook/Website together, so you’ll have to wait to learn more. BUT! I thought I would give some advice on working with your spouse!

As you know, I’ve worked with Bret as a business partner/consultant/second shooter/etc for the past 3 years. We believe that the husband is the leader in the marriage and household. It has been a big adjustment and large learning curve over the years. I learned that I am VERY independent, stubborn and prideful. These traits served me well as a single woman/business owner, but I really had to grow when I married Bret. I had to learn to say, you know what, I don’t know it all and Bret has some great points.

So advice for women business owners who are transitioning from being a single to being a married:

  1. Pray. Ask God to be glorified in your business and keep you at peace!
(That second part is SO important!)
  2. Be humble.
  3. Listen to what he has to say about your business. It’s always good to have a fresh set of eyes.
  4. Don’t make changes right away that he suggests. Talk through them, use the knowledge that you have about your business to get on the same page.
  5. See him as a partner.

Now, this next part, I don’t have “seasoned” advice, but I’m still going to take a shot!

Bonus advice for couples who have two different businesses:

  • Your business is NOT going to be exactly the same as your spouses. I am a wedding photographer, Bret is a personal trainer. Our target client is different. We can certainly help each other out, but some aspects will be different.
  • When they’re talking about their business, don’t be thinking about your business. (This was Bret’s advice!)
  • See it as an adventure to take together.

So there you go! That’s where we’re at right now and some advice! It can be a really awesome and fun thing! Today was great, we sat and watched a few hours of videos about marketing/branding/etc. It was a great refresher for me and an awesome start for him. I can’t wait to share how this goes for us.

Do you work with your spouse in a small business? What do you struggle with? What joys do you have?

And what better way to leave you than with a picture of us being joyful in our work!

Day 3159 – How We Continue To Stay Out Of Debt, How We Have Money Saved, And How We Had Extra For Taxes

If you would have told me 10 years ago that I would have a three month emergency fund, that I would be debt free for almost five years, that I wouldn’t get anxious when paying bills, and that I would get excited about taxes, I probably would have called you crazy.

I came into our marriage with about $30,000 of debt. This was from reckless spending, big purchases, starting a business on credit cards, and having to pay for necessities on my credit card while using all my cash paying for things for my DUI. Ha, if you also told me 10 years ago I’d be 100% ok talking about getting arrested and talking about my drinking problem, I would have called you crazy….and been super embarrassed that you knew I was arrested.

Through Bret working like six jobs, me working two jobs, extra money coming in because of the GI Bill, and very strict budgeting, we were able to pay everything off less than four years into our marriage. Since then we’ve stayed out of debt and have been able to save. Our savings accounts have fluctuated over the past few years. At one point we did have six months saved, but gave a bit away and went on a few adventures.

So what have we been doing since then that I was actually excited and not stressed at all about our taxes?

Here are a few things:

Since well before I was married to Bret, I kept a detailed spreadsheet that showed my income and expenses for 1-2 years into the future. I can see what times of the year will be harder than others (right now that’s the summer since Bret is paid on a 10 month schedule at his day job), I can see when we would have to dip into savings unless we made an adjustment, and I can quickly see how a change in expenses will change things for the rest of the year (and into the next). But this approach has some disadvantages and doesn’t show the full picture.

To get a very detailed picture of how we spend our money, we got an account on mint.com. It’s a free service that connects to all of your accounts. You can set up budgets for all areas of your life and get notifications when you’re getting close to a budget. When we first signed up, I was shocked to see how much we spent on gas. It was much more than I thought we spent. What I love about mint is that is shows a very real picture of how things are….not how you want them to be. It has limitations too, for sure. Just yesterday, I was told I was over budget for home insurance because I paid the balance in February instead of April. I know I have the money there, but mint wants to show me a big red in that budget. This is why it’s been helpful to use several methods to track our money and budgets. One thing I didn’t know I could do until recently was actually split receipts. So if I go to Walmart and buy groceries for us but also some notebooks for my business, and supplies for our business, I can split it in mint.

Before we got our first check for the real estate investing business, we decided how to divvy out the income. 30% goes right back into the business, whether this is a larger budget for the next few months, or to help us get through summer months. 32.5% goes into our savings account. 32.5% is saved for taxes. 5% is for celebrating/travel/etc. Because of this method, we were able to have money set aside for taxes. So there was no anxiousness for when the bill came to both pay our accountants (who we LOVE by the way), or even if we had to pay the government. Because the money was there, for that purpose. It was a totally trippy feeling, but very very cool.

The next thing we want to work on is having a good idea of if we’ll owe or get money back. We don’t want to go into our tax season wondering what’s going to happen. I mean, we had this money just sitting in an account waiting. If we had known what our taxes would have looked like a few months ago, we could have invested that money back into the business sooner.

And I’ve heard some businesses use things like boats to save on taxes, so….life goal? 😀
