About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 3495 – Blogs You Can Follow

Excitement level is high over here, only six more posts to write and I’ll be done. I know some of you are sad at my leaving, which I really appreciate. I wanted to pass along a few blogs that I love to read myself to help you fill the void. These are two that I personally read almost every time they release a new post.

Beauty Beyond Bones
The main thing she writes about is her experience with her eating disorder and recovery, but she talks about all kinds of things.

No Wine I’m Fine
I have really enjoyed this one. As I’ve mentioned before, it can be lonely being the only sober one in the room sometimes. So if you’re looking for one about being sober, I highly enjoy this one.

Day 3494 – Dump Your Significant Jerk Day – or – Deleting My Facebook Account

I’m in the process of deleting my Facebook account, and I have to say, when I saw this “fun day” pop up, I thought it was a perfect time to talk about why I’m deleting it and how hard it’s been to actually do it.

So why delete Facebook? One of the biggest things for me is the emotional drain. Even having a tightly curated “close friends” feed, where I only have folks that share good things and that I want to keep up with, unfollowing anyone who shares ignorant, angry, or negative post, and blocking it on my phone, I still get pulled into looking at the full feed and seeing posts that just don’t help me as a person.

Facebook became an important part of marketing in my different businesses and for a long time, I couldn’t justify leaving. Until a few weeks ago, when I realized that I didn’t HAVE to be on there anymore because of what I’m working on now.

I have also realized just how much of my life has revolved around Facebook, from the many accounts that were set up using the “sign in with Facebook,” to keeping in touch with people, to saving things to look at later. I have like 10+ tasks to complete in my Asana reminder. Things like making sure there is an admin for Facebook groups and pages I manage, to saving things I need.

The thing I’m most looking forward to after I delete Facebook and stop posting on this blog? Actually consuming content without feeling like I’m so far behind in my own creation. I’m also looking forward to finally writing books again.

Have you deleted your Facebook? Do you think I’m crazy to do it?

Day 3493 – Currently Reading And A Marvelous Gift To Me!

Last night, I gave myself a gift – Marvel Unlimited. It’s basically access to over 20,000 Marvel comics, yes please. While it’s simply overwhelming how much there is to read, I cannot wait to tackle it.

I’m also making my way through the books in the photo. I really am loving Hindsight and am writing down lots of nuggets of wisdom.

Day 3492 – The Things That Surprised Me About Blogging Every Day

When I started this blog all the way back on April 11, 2011, I had no idea the path it would take. My original goal was to give potential and current clients an inside look into our marriage. We strove to be friends with our clients and this seemed a good way to do that…and to keep us at the top of everyone’s minds.

For five years, that’s what this blog was, it also included sharing about our travels, which lead to a book about road trip travel. Since stopping photography, it has become a hodgepodge of topics, but a few things surprised me during the time and as I look back.

After reading, Dream Big, Think Small: Living an Extraordinary Life One Day at a Time, I was struck by the power of showing up each day. It was at that point that I did rough math and figured I had written, likely, over half a million words.

I realized that blogging every day stretched my writing muscles in lots of great ways.

I never expected people to respond like they did about my alcoholism and sobriety.

I don’t think I expected folks to read it so much and pay attention so much.

So thank you all for the surprising things. 🙂

Day 3491 – Inspire Your Heart With Art Day

I’ve known about this day since last year, but I wasn’t sure what image I would include. As it turns out, I read a fantastic kid’s book last night, Imagine! by Raúl Colón. This was really just an image book, but the author’s note really added to the story.

As I’m writing this 12 hours later than normal, I’m sooooo happy with my decision to stop posting here. Boy howdy. Tomorrow starts the single digits of remaining posts, anything special you want to know/have me write about? Let me know in the comments below.
