About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2746 – Networking With Husband Pants

Today, Bret has off of work and today happened to be a networking event. I talked him in to going with me and I’m excited to share this time with him! The networking group is headed by Carly Fuller of Carly Fuller Photography. She’s put together such an awesome networking group! It’s truly one of my favorites.

Day 2744 – What I’m Reading Now – or – Reading Challenges

I finished last year reading 75 books, a goal I wouldn’t have had if I wasn’t active on Goodreads. Some of those were kid’s books (about 14). As I started the year with a goal of reading 100 books. I also came across a few other challenges – The Modern Mrs. Darcy 2017 Reading Challenges (I’m doing both) and the BCPL Reading Challenge. I’ve already read 29 books, but about 25 of them are kid’s books. I have no idea how many kid’s books I’ll read this year, but I think 75 books that are not kid’s books might be a goal. We’ll see how the year progresses.

Why am I reading so many kid’s books? Well, they’re super fun! Duh! But also because I’m writing a kid’s book too! It’s an idea that has been marinating for years and I hope to get it to paper sooner rather than later.

What have I learned so far? First, that having a challenge pushes me to read books I wouldn’t otherwise read. A perfect example is from the Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading For Growth Challenge – to read a book that’s more than 600 pages. I thought I was set reading Bonhoeffer because Goodreads said it had 608 pages, which it does….technically….but the actual book is only 542, the rest is front materials and indexes. I still hope to read it because it’s been so highly recommended and the source material for my favorite Thrice song, Firebreather. So, I found myself wandering the library looking for a big book. Yesterday, I found, Me Being Me Is Exactly As Insane As You Being You – a novel told completely in lists. Oh friends, I LOVE lists! This has been such an interesting way to tell a story that I’m already 1/6 of the way through. I NEVER would have picked up this book. It’s exciting to see how just by adding a little bit of structure to my reading, it’s opening up new worlds of books.

Another one I wouldn’t necessarily pick up is Unprecedented – a book on the recent election. I’m curious to see how it skews (if at all) and what I learn.

You’ll also see Love Comes Softly in the photo – this is a book I picked up because of the Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading For Fun Challenge – A book you’ve already read. I read this book when I was a teen and it really holds up. πŸ™‚

What are you reading right now?

Day 2743 – Repost From Three Years Ago – The Most Magical Moment At Disneyland

I reread this post while sitting in my car and just let the tears flow. I think we should all take more time to appreciate this beautiful moments in our day. πŸ™‚

For this story, I need to start about 15 years ago.

When I was 16 and my brother was 14, our grandparents took us to Hawaii. We had amazing adventures and saw great things. It was a wonderful trip and I’m so thankful that I had the opportunity to go. One of the highlights for me (don’t laugh!) was the pineapple whip at the Dole plantation. It is really just this frozen yogurt/pineapple thing….but the taste is amazing. I really cannot put it into words, but hopefully the fact that I still remember how amazing it was after 15 years is description enough.

This March, you may remember, my grand father passed away.

While I was in California, I went to Disneyland!!! It was an AMAZING day! I felt like a kid again and have a whole lot of pictures and stories about that! But this story is the most important and deserves its own post.

At some point during the day, my friend mentioned that she HAD to stop at this pineapple place for a pineapple whip. I gave her a “mouth open/shut up/are you freakin’ serious” look. I then explained about the experience in Hawaii and that it MIGHT just be the same thing!

In the evening, we finally got in line for this potentially SAME thing! While waiting in the 20 minute (or more) line, I told my friend about how my grandfather had passed away in the spring.

We got up to the counter, ordered and stepped out of line. I was a little nervous to try it, because it had been built up in my mind for 15 years.

I took a bite. It was the same.

I closed my eyes to really focus on the taste.

As soon as I did, I was transported back to Hawaii. I felt the spray of ocean air. I smelled the smells of the pineapple plantation. I felt the hot sun. I remembered my grandfather.

I opened my eyes, full of tears. My friend asked if I was crying (I want to insert here that I teared up a LOT during the day from sheer joy….so she wasn’t surprised or worried about that). I said that I was and to give me just a moment to explain why. I knew if I explained why at that moment, I would burst into loud sobs.

So we walked to the next ride and I enjoyed the whip. Remembering my trip to Hawaii, remembering my grandfather, and remembering that even a 31 year old can have a magical moment at the happiest place on earth.

Day 2742 – Throw Back Thursday To My First Visit To California

About 9 years ago, Bret had returned from Iraq and we had just the best visit! I still remember wondering if we would end up getting married or not. So glad it all worked out, I like sharing life with this guy!
