About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2786 – Bret Works At The Best School!

Last night, I got to check out the coolest event at Bret’s school, literature night! Classrooms were transformed into worlds from books. The Boxcar Children, Little House On The Prairie, Lemony Snicket, The Berenstain Bears, cookies and milk in honor of If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, they also had several Jeopardy! games about books, and my favorite room, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. It was amazing how the rooms were transformed. There were lockers with scenes from books too. It was all I could do to not jump up and down like a little kid. It was neat to see how much Bret’s students like him. Everywhere we went, kids were saying Hey Mr. G! I got one or two Hey Mrs. G’s!

The first room we checked out was The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe. You had to go through the wardrobe to get in!!!

In the winter section, they gave kids packages to carry and an obstacle course to carry them through. Then they had a beautiful map of Narnia. *swoon*

img_5684

In the next room, we received a little vile of Aslan’s potion. (see below for a picture). There was a white witch handing out Turkish delight and if the kids ate it, they were frozen by the witch. But then someone had a fan with a lion around it and that was Aslan’s breath unfreezing them!

The stone table was there.

Another favorite room was the Berenstain Bears. They made their tree house!!!!

img_5686

We sat by the fire for a few minutes too. πŸ™‚

After we finished up, we were helping pack up and it turns out they were giving away books! I got some GREAT ones! I can’t wait to read them and pass them on!

What a great night. πŸ™‚

Day 2784- Why You Can’t Afford To Travel

I absolutely love to travel. I especially love road trips. I love being able to escape the routine. I love waking up with the ocean as my background. But I used to see travel as unattainable and expensive. I would see people taking these amazing trips and jealousy would flood my mind and I would think things like “I really wish I could do that.” I mentioned how my business life changed when I read The 4-Hour Workweek (* Affliate link) by Timothy Ferriss. But there was another change in my brain about travel after I read his book. It’s not as unattainable as I previously thought. I can’t remember the exact amount and I can’t look at the book at the moment, but, roughly, there was a family of 4 or 5 who sailed around the world for a year or so. Now, how much would you expect something like that to cost? $100,000? A lot right? Well, they did it for about $25,000, I think. To sail the world and see amazing things. That’s crazy! So that was a BIG change in how I thought about travel. It’s not as much as you think.

While we were at the beach, I was reading Tim Ferriss’s new book, Tools of the Titans. I want to share an affiliate link to this, but I haven’t finished it yet and I don’t want to promote something I haven’t fully investigated. But I have to say, this book is AMAZING. It has such a great “pick and choose” format and I love that. There is so much great advice and practical tips and immediate actionable things. I happened to read the section How to Earn Your Freedom on the beach and I was struck by how we seem to view travel. There were a lot of things I highlighted in that particular section, but I think this quote is the most applicable to this post.

Long-term travel doesn’t require a massive ‘bundle of cash’; it requires only that we walk through the world in a more deliberate way.” – Tim Ferriss Tools of the Titans p. 364

If you think you can’t afford to travel, you will never be able to afford travel.

Before we decided to go the beach, Bret and I had a long conversation about what we would do to celebrate our “met ya versary.” At first, it was not a fun conversation for me, coming from being in a pretty awful financial situation, and having hard conversations about money. Even though Bret was talking about the budget for our trip in a completely different way, I found myself getting stressed out and discouraged. But then Bret said something that completely turned my mind around. It was not “we can’t afford this” it was “what can we do to bring in the money that we need?” It was such a different mindset and was more of an exciting conversation.

We did a few things over the weekend, including going to the movies and getting a few meals, but for our purposes, I want to share just the expenses for the trip to the beach.

One tank of gas – $34.83
Breakfast – $34.22
Lunch – $12.46
Dinner – $15.13
Drinks – $9.70 (water, tea, beer)
Oceanfront room – $98.35
Breakfast – $9.94
Lunch – $13.77
Total – $228.40

As you can see, we paid for every single meal. We only packed water and coffee for the drive down. We did no planning, no pre-booking of the hotel, or looking for the best deal. If we had done a little more planning, we could have packed a cooler with drinks and sandwiches and saved a ton of money. We’ve driven across the country and back for under $500. We know about saving money while traveling!

Another thing about this particular trip is that we were only gone from 3 a.m. on Sunday morning until Monday around 4 p.m. That’s only about 37 hours.

This happened to be one of our most amazing trips. What’s crazy is that it was so simple, it wasn’t that much money, and it was a quick trip. The whole thing has made me think how I used to view travel and money versus how I view them now. It has renewed my desire to encourage YOU that you can travel, even if you think you can’t afford it or have time to go. I’m sure there are areas where you can cut back and save that money for a trip. In the nature of being totally honest, we spent almost $400 at Dunkin Donuts last year. That’s insane! If you don’t already, I recommend you get a Mint account! It tracks EVERYTHING, sometimes that’s not a comfortable thing to see….like spending that much on Dunkin. But it’s helpful in budgeting and planning for things.

So when will you take your next trip?

Day 2783 – Distracted All Day

I had high hopes of a nice long “Why You Can’t Travel” post…but I was finding the words were escaping me as I tried to write. I hopped into other things and today’s post just went lower and lower on the “to do list.”

So, you get a pretty photo from a church. πŸ™‚

Day 2782 – So What Did We Do On Our Adventure Weekend? – Trip To Ocean City Maryland

Oh my goodness, what an amazing weekend! I will share a post in the next few days about my thoughts on travel and why people can’t afford to travel. I’m realizing more and more that I’m extremely passionate about this.

As I mentioned, this past Thursday was the ten year anniversary of meeting Bret. I told him in the weeks leading up to the day that this was an important day to me. He mentioned spending about $200 to celebrate…whether it was going away or just doing a bunch of fun things. Here’s how we ended up spending that (and some more).

On Friday, we signed the lease to our new home. Can’t wait to move! Our new landlords are super cool and we have had long conversations with them already.

While we were talking, my stomach made the loudest, craziest growl it has ever made. I seriously thought it was their dog at first. Ha! So, we grabbed dinner after.

I finally tried the Taco Bell Naked Chicken Chalupa. So freakin good! Had a kick I wasn’t expecting but really enjoyed.

img_5552

We always pass this kabob food truck and say we gotta try that some day! Well, Friday was someday. Also super delicious.

img_5553

On Saturday, we decided to cash in some free movie tickets to see Lego Batman. Dude, it was SO funny. I highly recommend it!

After the movie, we wandered around in a Wholefoods. My first time. Holy cow do they have their presentation down! Good looking produce. And hilarious produce. How cute are these Pee Wee potatoes?

If you’ve followed our blog for a while, you know we love to drive to the beach (Ocean City, Maryland) in the middle of the night and watch the sunrise. We left a little later than we would’ve liked, but we still arrived in time for the sunrise. Boy howdy, we were NOT disappointed! With the clouds, it was a stunning sunrise.

img_5563

The great thing about watching the sunrise in the winter is free parking at the inlet and not many people. Oh yea, we brought our chairs! Very comfy sunrise watching, for sure!

While we were watching, someone walked by and said their was a seal down the beach. We walked down and checked it out.

img_5608

After the sun was up, our stomachs were growling for food. So off we walked down the boardwalk. Remember, this is February and a Sunday….soooooo, nothing was open! We walked all the way up to 7th street and cut down to find something! We finally found a cute little spot, Sorianos. It was so nice to find someplace open!

img_5614

The food was amazing, and the sausage was some of the tastiest I’ve ever had. Nom. Nom. Nom.

img_5616

After our bellies were full and our bladders were empty, we walked back to the beach with chairs, blankets, and books in tow. We spent hours reading and chatting. It was absolutely wonderful.

img_5617

When we walked back to our car, we were surprised to see how many people had arrived. Thankfully, this meant there were some smart business owners who were open. I was craving some fries, but was discouraged to see the line for Thrasher’s. Dude, I would estimate at least 100-200 people in line. WAHHHHH? We did NOT wait in line, and kept walking. We were happy to find Polock Johnny’s and enjoyed cheese fries and fried Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. So. Freakin. Good.

img_5624

At this point, we started thinking about where to stay the night. We walked WAYYYYY up the boardwalk and back down the inlet, looking at hotels, looking at availability and figuring our the best place to stay. We drove up and down Coastal Highway, Bret searching while I pointed out places. We finally ended up at a Quality Inn within walking distance to Burger King, grabbed some dinner and settled in for a relaxing evening. We even jumped in the ocean! Oh man, it HURT, but we did it. Then we jumped in the indoor pool and spent some time in the sauna. Soooooo relaxing. The rest of the evening was spent reading and chatting.

img_5631

We slept with the door open all night and enjoyed the sound of the waves. We even got to see the sunrise from our bed. It was a much shorter commute to watch the sunrise that morning!

img_5662

It was such a great weekend. So very relaxing but it also put fuel to the fire of our dreams of more travel and enjoying life. Check back for my thoughts on why you can’t afford to travel!
