About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2791 – Throw Back Thursday To Big Wishes

On our 2016 summer road trip, we pulled to the side of the road to watch the sunset and found a great surprise. GIANT wishes! I still can’t believe the size of them.

Day 2790 – Crying In The Coffee Shop – or – Officially An Author

I am sitting in the coffee shop, crying. Neither of things is out of the ordinary, but the reason today is new. I am officially a paid author. I realized I published my book* in December, but today I got my first payment for book sales. I also got my first payment for being an affiliate partner with Amazon. I officially made money while I’ll slept. It is so awesome to see the physical, er, digital statement, of a few of my goals. I found myself feeling the same way I did when I saw my book in person for the first time. Utterly overwhelmed. I’m so thankful for the spark in my soul to write and share my experiences. I’m so thankful that others are interested in reading what I’ve written. Thank you to those who have purchased my book, read my blog, or clicked on an Amazon link* and made a purchase. Y’all encourage me to keep going.

And to those who have dreams, continue to chase them!

Day 2789 – Lost Moments Because Of Drinking

I’ve been reflecting a lot on my previous drinking problem, my sobriety, and my lost moments over the years. It has been almost 2 and a half years since alcohol last touched my lips. It has been nearly 10 and a half years since my hands were cuffed for drinking while intoxicated. I’m also approaching my 35th birthday. Lots of reason for some introspection. One aspect I haven’t touched on as much is the lost moments because of drinking.

When we stopped in San Antonio, I definitely got drunk. I don’t remember much from the last few hours at the bar, and driving to the next stop. I remember asking Bret for nachos, and he got them. At the time, I had a broken tooth and used wax as a temporary “cap.” I was so far gone, I don’t remember swallowing the wax. I don’t remember the sunset from the rooftop bar. I don’t remember the whole game when we played giant Jenga.

When we visited a friend in California, I don’t remember half of the evening because I had TWO glasses of beer as big as my head.

When attending a party with some of my cousins and long time friends, I don’t remember all of the hanging out, or leaving my purse in my own car, thus prompting a freak out the next day.

On many of our getaways, I don’t remember all of the time in the hotel because of the amount I drank.

I don’t remember portions of my best friend’s rehearsal dinner because I had SO much wine. There’s even a picture of me getting a glass of wine from the server with the “are you sure about this” face. (See below)

I don’t remember full trips to the state fair because of how much I drank beforehand and during.

I don’t remember full conversations where I’m actually trying to share the gospel with someone else….again, because I was drunk. These are the moments I’m most embarrassed of.

There are family events I don’t remember because I was drunk.

There are two family vacations I have very little memory of because I drank the entire time.

I think back to these things and while embarrassment is a big thing I feel, I also feel untold gratitude that God would protect me through it all. That He still loved me, despite my screw ups. I also feel untold thankfulness that He gave me the strength to finally quit drinking for good. It has taught me, over and over, that no one is too far from God’s help. He is able to change anyone.

I don’t know your struggle. I don’t know what you have failed at over and over again. But I can say that God can work in you and He can change you.

Day 2788 – Secret To A Happy Marriage? Make Your Wife Coffee

There is one thing Bret does for me almost every day – make me coffee. It always warms my heart, my soul, and my internal coffee pot. Bret, thanks for giving me another reason to love you a little more than a Mega Stuf Oreo.

Day 2787 – 5 Habits Every Aspiring Reader Should Develop

I have a current personal goal of reading 300 books this year. Before you think that’s crazy, I’m thinking the majority of the books, probably about 200-250 will be children’s books. I’ve read 64 books this year and only 11 have been “grown up” books. I love to read and I love to encourage others to read. So, I wanted to give you some of my habits to read more.

My Top 5 Habits Every Aspiring Reader Should Develop

1 – Have a Goodreads account and app on your phone. This amazing website and app has helped me find new books, track what I’ve read, what I want to read, and get an idea if a book I’m thinking of reading will be something I would enjoy.
2 – Have a “To Be Read List” – I use Goodreads for this. Using the app, I can scan a book and quickly add it to my to be read list. I also took my account a step further and added two shelves – to be read fiction and to be read non-fiction. This way, if I’m at the library, I can quickly look through my current 390 books on either list.
3 – Have a set time that you read. Maybe it’s 15 minutes before bed. Maybe it’s while you drink your cup of coffee. Whenever it is, keep that date.
4 – Have a location where you love to read. This is especially helpful if the location is really comfortable. I’ve mentioned before my favorite spot is curled up under the heating vent.
5 – Read books that you love. Don’t read books you think you HAVE to read because everyone says you have to read them. Also, don’t feel like you HAVE to finish the book. As hard as it is to give up another check mark on my goal of books, there are times when I’m not feeling a book and I stop reading.
5a – Do a reading challenge. This year I’ve already read some books I never would have thought to read if I wasn’t participating in a reading challenge.

What do you think of my list? What ways do you cultivate a reading habit?
