About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2931 – I Am SOOOOO Not Perfect – or – How Goofing Off For Five Hours Taught Me A Lot About Myself

I did a little experiment yesterday – I tracked every single minute of my day. Looking at my final numbers, I realized that I need to split a few categories. I had a fun category, and I logged time playing video games, or resting, or watching videos. But, here’s the awful part, I realized that I spent 5 hours of my day on fun. What a waste of my day! I didn’t want to, I REALLLLLLLY didn’t want to, but I told Bret. Oy, not easy. But here’s the cool thing, we ended up having a really great conversation about it last night, and into the morning (lol, going to be a tired day today!) It made me remember days after I had a ton to drink, and the embarrassment of telling Bret. It made me think I was just the pits. But, today, I can look at what I experienced yesterday, and be honest with myself. I can look at those numbers that are telling the truth, not glossing over what I think really happened, and make changes. When I feel the pull of video games and wanting to just goof off and have fun, I can remind myself how quickly it can add up.

One thing that came out of our conversation was about enjoying the journey, not always looking to the next thing, but appreciating where you are. Looking back on how far you’ve come is a really great exercise too. We found ourselves talking about how far we’ve come just in our diet. Oh man, it used to be BADDDDDDDD. Regularly having cases of soda in our fridge, hot dogs, and ramen noodles. Now that is the rarity and not the norm.

I’m not sure how long I’ll track my time to this degree, or how late in the day I’ll track. There is a level of wanting freedom of time, but then again, won’t it be that much more sweeter and “well deserved” if I know I’ve put in X hours “at the office” that I can spend X hours reading fiction and playing video games?

What about you, have you tracked your time like this? Did you find things out about yourself you didn’t want to admit?

Day 2930 – I’ve Always Wanted To Do That – or – Did You Save Your Money? – or – How To Save For A Road trip

One year ago today, I posted a blog titled – How To Go From “I’ve Always Wanted To Do That!” To “I Did That!”. I detailed a good budget for a road trip, very close to what Bret and I did and spent last summer. I also gave a challenge – save $40 a paycheck for 2 years. If you did that, you would have enough saved for a road trip very similar to the one we took. So, I have to ask you, did you save your $40 a check this past year? If you did, you’d have $1,040 saved for your trip. $40 might sound like a big number, but it’s really not, that’s $20 a week, $2.86 a day. What small purchases are you making each week that add up to this? If you said no to a coffee or a meal, you could take your trip.

I’ll check back with you about this next year, where I hope you’ve saved $1,040…..or $2,080. 🙂

Day 2928 – What I’m Reading Right Now

Ha ha, I will say, these are just the books I’m definitely reading right now. This does not include the 3 fiction novels due next week, or the 2 kids books and fiction novel due the week after that…..or the full shelf of books from the library….but hey!

What are you reading right now?

Day 2927 – Eight Years Ago Today…

Eight years ago today, we came home from our honeymoon! I can’t believe it was so long ago, but in some ways it feels like yesterday. The last stop in our honeymoon trip (which was a road trip!), was Hershey Park! Here’s one of favorite pictures of us, riding a roller coaster. 🙂
