About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2961 – How We Learned Some Life Lessons From Almost Eating An Entire Tub Of Ice Cream

A few nights ago, I had a dream about an ice cream sundae. That day, I purposed to buy the supplies for an ice cream sundae….and I did. Man, being an adult is great. I bought a regular sized container of ice cream. We enjoyed it so much, it was gone in like two days. I thought, never fear, I’ll just get some more. Little did I know, I would be purchasing a big threat. A 4.5 quart threat. We had some when I got home from the store. We had some that evening. The next morning. We would eat together and separate. Every time, the other would get a look of shame. Every time, we would make jokes. But here’s one thing I noticed, it felt very, very, very close to home when thinking back to the look of shame I held the morning after a big binge drinking night. I had to put a stop to the jokes, because it brought back such sad memories.

So, we have this huge tub of ice cream, and by the next day, we have eaten way more than two people should have eaten. Seriously, this tub should last two people a month, or at least a week or two. In a stroke of very good and convicting luck, I was chowing down on this ice cream while watching a film theory video about Wall-E. Seeing the gluttony of the humans was really helpful in the next thing that happened.

I asked Bret a few times around this point – “Do we need to dump this down the drain?” It was finally decided, yes, we definitely need to. Before we could change our minds, I turned on the water into the tub of ice cream.

I realized in that moment that I don’t think I was ever the one to dump my alcohol down the drain. It was dumped for me the day after my DUI. It was dumped by Bret after I went crazy on brand new bottles. It was such a surreal thought as I was running the water and garbage disposal. It was a humbling moment, but it was also an encouraging moment. We realized we had a problem and we took care of it somewhat quickly.

Who knew so much could result from a tub of ice cream.

Day 2960 – Is It Monday Yet?

I am so completely done with this week (and last week, while we’re at it). It has been a low productivity, discouraging, sad, and overall underwhelming two weeks. I am so ready for it to be done and to move on to next week. While I’m not exactly looking forward to Bret going back to school next week, I am looking forward to the routine. It has been a pretty nice summer though. We haven’t traveled as much we would like, but we have taken a few small trips. This weekend, we’ll be traveling south to find a spot in the path of totality for the eclipse. I am so excited to experience this thing so many people have said is like nothing you’ve ever seen/experienced before. I have no idea where we’ll end up, which is part of the fun. So while it’s not a normal sentiment, I cannot wait for Monday!

Day 2959 – My Reverse Bucket List (Things I HAVE Accomplished/Done)

As I was trying to figure out what to blog today, one idea was a reverse bucket list. I did a little digging, and basically, it’s a list of things I HAVE done. I thought it would be a great exercise, not only as a way for y’all to get to know me more, but also a way for me to be thankful.

1. Meet and marry someone.

2. Marry my best friend.

3. Take a four cross country road trips.

4. See Jenny Lake again.

5. Make six figures (granted, this was in cumulative years, but still).

6. Write a book*.

7. Write another book*.

8. Successfully quit drinking.

9. Pay off and stay out of debt.

10. Start and continue a blog.

11. Make money from a blog. (It’s a little baby amount, but it’s something!)

12. Read a lot of books.

13. Jump out of a plane.

14. Work for myself.

15. Encourage others to grow their businesses.

What’s on your reverse bucket list?

Day 2958 – Where Is My Mind Today?

One year ago, we were at the beach catching the sunrise and grabbing some crabs. We’re not there today, but I sure wish we were…

Day 2957 – Starbucks Chats Are My Favorite!

Last night I got to catch up with a very good friend. Even though it was the evening, I got a frap. Apparently, that keeps you up, and thus makes it harder to get up in the morning…..but frap!
