Yesterday, I finally finished getting the data entry portion of my taxes completed. Every year, I kick myself for not entering things as I go. When I enter everything at the end of the year or the beginning of the next, it means I have to dig for some information. Thankfully, I have very detailed worklogs for my clients, so I can pull those up and compare the times I worked with the charge I want to write off. Then I know, ok, I was working in Starbucks at 8 a.m. on March 6th for this client, so I can write this coffee off. But when I get to my busy times, especially December and January, it can get very complicated. The last thing I did, was print off my EZPass transactions. If you’re not from the east coast or Maryland, EZPass is a transmitter for tolls. It’s attached to your credit card and the license plate on the car. I’ve had it for years and it’s saved me so much headache. Thanks to the new governor, it has even saved me money. There’s your backstory.
When we rented a car for our summer 2016 road trip, I added the car to my EZPass account. This meant we didn’t have to worry about carrying cash for tolls. When we got back from our trip, I didn’t think about the fact that there was an additional car on my account. Nope, didn’t think about it in fact until yesterday….a good 8 months after we turned in the car. Wouldn’t you know, there were $10 worth of tolls on that little guy’s license plate! GAH! I’ll be call EZPass to see if there’s anything I can do, but it was only $10, so not a huge deal.
So friends, if you plan on renting a car and putting it on your EZPass (or whatever you use in your state) account, please set a reminder to take it off when you return!
Here’s our little Devil’s Advocate. 🙂
