Day 3357 – The Last Lecture – A Book That Reminds You To Live And Enjoy Life – Read A New Book Month Day 19

The Last Lecture* by Randy Pausch was a book (and lecture) I heard about a few times and I finally got to read the book in March. It was a great confirmation that I am living my life with the end in mind. Given that I’ve experienced so much loss in my life, I strive to embrace each day, and I recognize the end often.

I loved how Randy talks about life and death and experiencing it all. It was a very moving book and I think well worth your time. Have you read it or seen his lecture? Let me know in the comments below.

Day 3356 – My Friend Fear: Finding Magic in the Unknown – or – I Bought A Book Today – Read A New Book Month Day 18

My Friend Fear: Finding Magic in the Unknown* by Meera Lee Patel was one of those lovely serendipitous library finds. The whole book was quite magical and helped me to look at fear differently. Meera’s art with the typed words and hand-drawn words combined into a beautiful journey through fear and how we can find magic in the unknown.

If you’ve spent any time here, you know the majority of my books come from the library. Until the last year or so, almost exclusively. But through my heavy reading, I’ve found some authors I’ve fallen in love with. Meera is one of them. Today, her new book Made Out Of Stars came out and I picked it up. I won’t link to it yet since I haven’t read it, but it seems like it will be just as great of a read. It’s a part journal, part book dealio and I can’t wait to start reading and filling it out! Have you read any of her books? Let me know in the comments below!

Day 3355 – Deep Work – A Book That Will Help You Focus On Work, The Right Way – Read A New Book Month Day 17

Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World* by Cal Newport was a really eye-opening and convicting book. It made me think seriously about how I use my time and how much time I’m on devices or mindlessly scrolling on the internet. There is so much that distracts us from our true work. There are so many things vying for our attention that takes us away from the things we really need to do.

I think one of the biggest takeaways from this is we need to really understand what we’re meant to put out into the world and then making that a priority. As well as focusing on the things that have a bigger impact on the overall picture. Whether it’s taking tasks off the best salesman so they can focus on that or knowing that scrolling through the full Facebook feed is going to bum you out, you can take control.

Day 3354 – Mother Bruce – A Children’s Book You’ll Enjoy Reading To Your Kids – Read A New Book Month Day 16

Mother Bruce* by Ryan T. Higgins was one of those random finds at the library and I just fell in love with the story and Bruce. I laughed at Bruce’s desire to eat organic and support local businesses and loved following along with his story of becoming Mother Bruce. I’ve also enjoyed the other books in the series and I’m looking forward to checking out Santa Bruce soon! I didn’t realize it was out until I searched Amazon for Mother Bruce!

If you’re looking for a children’s book you’ll enjoy reading with your kids, this is the book for you.

Day 3353 – Keep Moving – A Book That Reminds You You’re Only As Old As You Act – Read A New Book Month Day 15

Keep Moving: And Other Tips and Truths about Aging* by Dick Van Dyke was one of the more fun audiobooks I’ve listened to. An audiobook tip is to find ones that the author reads.

Dick is just so much freakin’ fun. He gave some great tips on how to age well and still have fun. What’s so great is that he actually lives the life he tells you that you should.

Bret and I listened to the book during a quick trip to a cabin on the Eastern Shore and the whole time, we just kept smiling at each other. This is how we try to live our lives – with unfettered joy and finding wonder in life. If you’re feeling a little older than you’d like, and want to feel young again, this is the book for you.
