Day 1223 – How I Honored My Husband Through Laundry Baskets

I’ll start this post with a little story.

It was the day Bret and I registered for our wedding gifts, a few months before our wedding. No…we need to go further back. Bret, as you may know, was a Marine. One thing that’s important is that their rooms are kept clean. Some guys would have a laundry basket. Not Bret. To make his job of cleaning even easier, he would do a few things that most people wouldn’t. He only had 1 fork, 1 spoon, 1 knife, 1 plate, etc. He’d reuse them during the day. He didn’t use a laundry basket, he used an empty drawer in his dresser. Ok…now we’re caught up….so when we were registering, I wanted to register for a laundry basket and he figured we’d just use a drawer. I really didn’t think we could get away with that….I figured between the two of us, we’d make a lot of laundry. We spent a good while (who knows now…it could have been 15 minutes or 30 minutes…) looking at laundry baskets…and “discussing” what we wanted/needed….and finally we found these drawers, with holes AND handles. It was a perfect compromise. Drawers for Bret, handles/baskets for me.

The lesson I learned through this was that you learn a LOT about your soon to be spouse when you register. It was quite an experience since we both came from very different view points on “stuff.” So, brides, register with a humble and light heart. You’re marrying your life partner…the stuff helps you in your journey…but it’s not what makes the journey. Listen to his wisdom and compromise. Also remember you’ll look back and wonder what the big deal was back then. (As I do right now!)

Day 936 – God Cares About Us, Even in the Small Things

I have now been a full-time wedding photographer for just about 5 months. It’s been quite a ride so far. I’ve learned so much about myself and my business. But I think the greatest thing I’ve learned is just how much God loves me. I’m reminded of the “normal stuff” like Christ dying for my sins and giving me new life. But last night, I was very moved by how He cares down to extremely small details.

The day we were in Target looking for Bret’s ring, he was also looking at the chocolate. I was of the mind of, eh, well, that’s a bit more than I’d like to spend…so we didn’t get any.

Then, last night, I was at my small group bible study through my church. Our current leader is actually the new head pastor of our church, which is so cool to me. I ended up hanging around for a little while after and just chatted about life and everything with my pastor and his wife. I had grabbed one little dark chocolate (Dove no less) candy for Bret. When my pastor’s wife noticed, she made me take another 7 pieces. It didn’t hit me until later how awesome that was. On the outside, it looks like someone being nice and giving something away. But deep down, to me, it is God showing that He sees even the smallest need want. What love! I find I’m crying for joy a lot more these days. 🙂
