Day 2908 – Happy Pineapple Day – or – That Time I Cried In Disneyland

I tell ya, these fun holidays are taking me right down memory lane this week! Today is Pineapple Day, and the following story is a perfect fit. I originally posted it in January of 2014.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For this story, I need to start about 15 years ago.
When I was 16 and my brother was 14, our grandparents took us to Hawaii. We had amazing adventures and saw great things. It was a wonderful trip and I’m so thankful that I had the opportunity to go. One of the highlights for me (don’t laugh!) was the pineapple whip at the Dole plantation. It is really just this frozen yogurt/pineapple thing….but the taste is amazing. I really cannot put it into words, but hopefully the fact that I still remember how amazing it was after 15 years is description enough.
This March, you may remember, my grand father passed away.
While I was in California, I went to Disneyland!!! It was an AMAZING day! I felt like a kid again and have a whole lot of pictures and stories about that! But this story is the most important and deserves its own post.
At some point during the day, my friend mentioned that she HAD to stop at this pineapple place for a pineapple whip. I gave her a “mouth open/shut up/are you freakin’ serious” look. I then explained about the experience in Hawaii and that it MIGHT just be the same thing!
In the evening, we finally got in line for this potentially SAME thing! While waiting in the 20 minute (or more) line, I told my friend about how my grandfather had passed away in the spring.
We got up to the counter, ordered and stepped out of line. I was a little nervous to try it, because it had been built up in my mind for 15 years.
I took a bite. It was the same.
I closed my eyes to really focus on the taste.
As soon as I did, I was transported back to Hawaii. I felt the spray of ocean air. I smelled the smells of the pineapple plantation. I felt the hot sun. I remembered my grandfather.
I opened my eyes, full of tears. My friend asked if I was crying (I want to insert here that I teared up a LOT during the day from sheer joy….so she wasn’t surprised or worried about that). I said that I was and to give me just a moment to explain why. I knew if I explained why at that moment, I would burst into loud sobs.
So we walked to the next ride and I enjoyed the whip. Remembering my trip to Hawaii, remembering my grandfather, and remembering that even a 31 year old can have a magical moment at the happiest place on earth.
Day 2906 – I Left My Heart In West Virginia – or – Happy Log Cabin Day!
I just love all of the fun “holidays” people celebrate. I adore log cabins, so I was happy I could share my love today!
This view is from a cabin we stayed in with friends back in 2013. It’s funny, West Virginia (where this was taken) is on my radar for my personal retreat!
Day 2905 – Library Adventures
One thing I’m trying to make time for in my life is fun and following my heart. I had a random urge to find a whole stack of books by the same author. I did some searching last night, and mapped out my plan. I ended up visiting 3 libraries today. All within 10-15 minutes of our apartment. It brought me so much joy to spend so much time around books today. I have absolutely NO shame in admitting I currently have 92 items checked out of the library. Ahhhh, so many books. I realized while driving around that it gave me the opportunity to follow two of my passions – books and travel. Even though I only spent about 30-60 minutes in the car, I still felt the joy of travel. It was a great reminder that you can still do the things you love with a low budget, and little time. I even came up with a new fun project….but I’m going to save that for another day. 🙂
What fun things do you do to enjoy your joys?
And if you’re wondering what 92 items look like, here you go…..well, actually 90….I have one ebook checked out and I THINK one item unaccounted for…..eeeek! But I will say, in all my years of having lots of books out, I’ve only had a couple of bucks in fees.
EDIT: The missing book was hiding in my backpack! Whew!
Day 2903 – Am I A Best Seller?
I check my Amazon stats every day or so. To see how many people have ordered using my Amazon link, and ordered one of my books. I really shouldn’t because I’m not getting serious traffic or money. Ha ha, but I still can’t help myself. Here’s a little known fact – it’s really easy to become a best seller on Amazon. I priced my book at $0.00 on Sunday, and shortly after, I was at #4 and #5 for two categories in the free lists. Yesterday, I was jumping around between 6 and 7 in a paid category.
To me, success in a book launch is just one more person making a change. I lucked out, and one of my reviewers had a change from reading the book, so the book was a success before it even launched. I will say, I am at the top if you search “Planning a road trip” on Amazon.
What do you think? What makes a book launch successful? What makes a person a best seller?
Day 2902 – My Road Trip Struggle
There’s something you don’t learn about road trips and cross country travel until after you take a few trips…..they’re really, really addicting!
As I’ve been checking my On This Day on Facebook this week, I’m reminded of our amazing road trip last summer. This time last year, we were leaving our little cabin at a KOA and driving to Yellowstone.
Ahhhh, road trips. 🙂
