Day 2923 – Teriyaki Madness!

Since Bret worked yesterday, we did a smaller anniversary celebration – dinner at Teriyaki Madness! The food was delicious and we hope to go back again soon!

Day 2922 – Happy Eight Trips Around The Sun Bret!!

Anniversaries and birthdays aren’t a huge deal around here. Some (every 5th one) have a little more weight. But I am happy with a “happy anniversary.” Today we celebrate 8 years of marriage. It’s crazy how fast it’s gone by. This guy has been in my life for over ten years. A whole decade.

I wouldn’t want to take this journey with anyone else.

Love ya husband pants. 🙂

Day 2919 – We Get To Hang Out With These Two Today!!!!

We’re so excited to hang out with our friends who sent us off on our road trip last year…

And who, unknowingly, gave me a special bouquet.

We can’t wait to catch up with you guys!

Day 2918 – What’s It Like For A Sober Jennilyn To Go Into A Liquor Store?

One question I get a lot is if Bret still drinks around me. He does, and I have no problem with that. I even will pick up his beer. I went to a local store that I’d never been in before yesterday. I ended up texting Bret most of the time I was there, trying to nail down which beer he wanted. I looked through one line of cases, which I thought was all of the cold options. When I got to the non-alcoholic drinks (sodas and the like), the guy working there said there were more of the type of beer I had, and craft beers down that way…..a whole BUNCH more. So it went from an ok store, to a pretty epic store pretty quickly.

So what’s it like for me to go into a liquor store now? Just like going into a regular store in most respects. I’m still texting Bret to make sure I get the right thing. I’m still buying something that he needs.

When I go into a liquor store, I find myself seeing different beverages, and thinking about when I got drunk on them. What happened in that moment. Oh, hey, there’s that Rita stuff from Bud…oh yea, I got WAYYYYYYYSSSSSSSSSTEEEEED on those a LOT. It was a really interesting thought. Here I was, surrounded by the thing that took down so much of my life. Here were the liquids that brought so much, and so much heartache. Here, were things that didn’t have power over me anymore. Like any vice, it can be a good thing in moderation. A little disclaimer, my journey is my own. I don’t recommend a recovered/recovering/etc alcoholic going into a liquor store. I know myself, and I know my limits. DO NOT TAKE MY EXAMPLE AS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO!

I say repeatedly that all of my success is because of God’s work in my life. From opening my eyes to taking my sin seriously, to giving me strength to say no again and again. Yet, when was the last time I thought about this, or pointed to His continued work in my life? So I want to take an opportunity to give another shout out to the Big Guy. I have become accustom to this amazing change in me. It is my new normal. It is so much a part of me now. Sobriety. Clearheadedness. All, completely, totally, irrevocably, God’s work. If you want to read my full story, or at least a pretty good summation, check out my testimony.

Day 2916 – How We Spent Our 4th

What a great July 4th! We’ve lived in the Ellicott City/Catonsville area for over two years, but we’ve never participated in the Catonsville parade and fireworks. Yesterday, we did. We decided to walk to everything since it was close enough that it made sense, and not too far that driving was required. I’m SO glad we walked! Even though it was hot, and we were sweat drenched when we got home, it was great.

We settled in on the lawn of Bret’s school for the parade. Even though we didn’t save our seats, we got a great spot….in the shade no less! There we so many great marching bands and folks in the parade. We got some cool freebies too.

The sign on this car says “Random Person(s) Picked From Parade Route – Cheer Loudly!”

After the parade, we decided to walk down to the highschool where the fireworks were taking place. We waited about 4 hours, chatted with others, enjoyed some great food from the food trucks, and all around relaxed.

I wasn’t sure what type of firework display we’d see, but friends, it was AMAZING! One of the better shows I’ve seen…..and I’ve seen some great fireworks. I only took one photo, because I wanted to actually sit back and enjoy. It was so great to do that. During the finale, you could feel the joy of the crowd – the oooos and ahhhs, the shouts of YEA! and the clapping afterwards. It was a little surreal. I thought – I am sitting with a ton of people (and I’m pretty sure there were thousands, all told on all of the various spots around the school property), and at this moment, most of them are so happy watching this cool thing. That kind of thing doesn’t happen too often.

What did you do for the 4th? Let me know below!
