Day 2945 – How To Make Big Improvements – Track Every Minute Of Your Day

As I admitted two weeks ago, I spent five hours playing video games in one day. It was painful to admit this to Bret, to myself, and to my readers. Boy howdy, it was a very humbling day. Since then, I have tracked my time on most weekdays. The only exception is when I work out of the home office. I haven’t tracked my time on the weekends, but I think I’m going to start. It is astounding how much my productivity, drive, and accomplishments take a dive on the weekends. I don’t want to necessarily work all weekend. In some respects, I don’t want to work at all. But I can be more purposeful in how I spend my time, and that’s what tracking my time has done for me – made me purposeful.

So how can you track your time? There are many ways to track time out there, but for me, I’m all about pen to paper, and using Excel to give me percentages and totals.

My best days start with preparation the night before.

Evening routine:
– clean all of the dishes
– prep the coffee for the morning
– fill all of the water bottles
– prep my doTERRA diffuser
– write out my to do list for the next day
– pick out the sermon to listen to
– copy my time spent sheet from today into a new sheet, rename it, and remove today’s time

I’m not all there for the first 15-20 minutes in the morning. If I have to sit down and figure out what to do, what to listen to, make the coffee, etc, it will not be the best use of my time.

Creating my to do list:
– I open all of my different Asana accounts (I’m only at three, not that crazy….yet)
– I move all my tasks around based on what type of day I’ll have – am I working at home or out of the office?
– I’m currently writing out my to do list on a small legal pad. This has helped me keep my expectations grounded. I mean, really, I’m not going to finish ALL of my tasks on a large legal pad, it’s too optimistic.
– I list my daily must dos first
– If there are especially important tasks, I add a star
– Once I finish my list and pack up my notes, I sometimes take the advice of Deep Work* and say something like “you are done work for the day.” It helps to tell my brain – “brain, you’re not working anymore, you are free to relax and do other things right now.”

Because I’ve done all the preparation the day before, it’s so easy to jump into my day. I already know what I’m going to do first, second, third, and beyond. My workspace is clean, my air will smell pretty (thanks diffuser!), and my coffee will be ready.

I use legal pads to keep track of my time; different colors for different clients and purposes. Over the last two weeks, I’ve split a few of the categories I’m tracking. Before, I had the following categories:
– On Jen Stuff
– On Fun
– On Home
– On Bret
– On each client

But this didn’t give me a robust picture at all.

Here are my current categories:
– Building Business – this includes blogging, reading other blogs, posting in my Facebook group, posting on social media, etc.
– Writing
– Workout/meditation/yoga
– Devos/journaling
– Self-Care
– Relax
– Organizing
– Education
– Fiction reading
– on fun – games
– social
– on home
– Bret work
– Bret growth
– each of my clients

I’ve set up a spreadsheet that totals my time and percentages and I update it throughout the day. Yesterday, I started the day with a goal of hours and percentages to hit in different categories. It was great to actually hit those goals.

Here’s a peek at my legal pads. Please excuse the handwriting. 😀

Do you track your time? Has it helped you or hindered you? Let me know in the comments below.

Day 2943 – Business Lunch With Bret

One of the coolest things that has happened in our lives recently is Bret building a business. It’s so fun to chat about business, mindset, and ways to grow. It’s not for everyone, but working with your spouse can be so fun.

And hey, chatting about business over Mexican food isn’t too bad either.

Day 2932 – Why I’m Thankful For Long Distance Relationships

I had originally planned to post about Junk Food Day, I mean how fun is that? But as I scrolled through On This Day on Facebook, my status from 10 years ago, was “Missing him….” That him was Bret, and he had been deployed overseas for about a month. We had only recently started officially dating. Bret was only deployed for a little over half a year, but he lived in California, and I lived in Maryland. By the time we got married two and a half years after we met, we had only spent roughly four months in the same time zone….and three of those months were when he moved to Maryland a few months before the wedding.

I forget that such a large chunk of our relationship was long distance. It was our normal – saying hello and saying goodbye at the airport, long phone calls, big phone bills, and lots of sleepless nights from talking late.

But I can point to that time as one of the biggest reasons we have the great marriage we have now. Being that far apart forced us to ONLY have communication. It caused us to be honest with each other, I mean, why not be honest with that much distance between you? During those hours and hours of conversations, we talked about everything. During those hours, we developed a deep friendship, which is one of the core pieces of our marriage.

While long distance relationships aren’t for everyone, I sure am glad that I had one. 🙂

This is a photo of Bret from his first visit to meet my family in 2007.

Day 2931 – I Am SOOOOO Not Perfect – or – How Goofing Off For Five Hours Taught Me A Lot About Myself

I did a little experiment yesterday – I tracked every single minute of my day. Looking at my final numbers, I realized that I need to split a few categories. I had a fun category, and I logged time playing video games, or resting, or watching videos. But, here’s the awful part, I realized that I spent 5 hours of my day on fun. What a waste of my day! I didn’t want to, I REALLLLLLLY didn’t want to, but I told Bret. Oy, not easy. But here’s the cool thing, we ended up having a really great conversation about it last night, and into the morning (lol, going to be a tired day today!) It made me remember days after I had a ton to drink, and the embarrassment of telling Bret. It made me think I was just the pits. But, today, I can look at what I experienced yesterday, and be honest with myself. I can look at those numbers that are telling the truth, not glossing over what I think really happened, and make changes. When I feel the pull of video games and wanting to just goof off and have fun, I can remind myself how quickly it can add up.

One thing that came out of our conversation was about enjoying the journey, not always looking to the next thing, but appreciating where you are. Looking back on how far you’ve come is a really great exercise too. We found ourselves talking about how far we’ve come just in our diet. Oh man, it used to be BADDDDDDDD. Regularly having cases of soda in our fridge, hot dogs, and ramen noodles. Now that is the rarity and not the norm.

I’m not sure how long I’ll track my time to this degree, or how late in the day I’ll track. There is a level of wanting freedom of time, but then again, won’t it be that much more sweeter and “well deserved” if I know I’ve put in X hours “at the office” that I can spend X hours reading fiction and playing video games?

What about you, have you tracked your time like this? Did you find things out about yourself you didn’t want to admit?

Day 2927 – Eight Years Ago Today…

Eight years ago today, we came home from our honeymoon! I can’t believe it was so long ago, but in some ways it feels like yesterday. The last stop in our honeymoon trip (which was a road trip!), was Hershey Park! Here’s one of favorite pictures of us, riding a roller coaster. 🙂
