Day 3448 – Sometimes Bad Memories Change Over Time

Y’all know I just loved Jen Sincero’s You Are A Badass At Making Money. One of my favorite parts was a story about some goats. I won’t give any of that away, you’ll just have to read it for yourself. But I strive to be like those goats.

I was reminded of an incident of bullying/teasing/whatever you want to call it when I was around 15. Some guy that was hanging around my friend group called me goat and made goat noises because I had some fuzz above my lip. For a long time, remembering that made me feel bad about myself. But looking back now, I think, wow, calling me a goat is a GREAT compliment! (lol, again, you gotta read the story in the book).

It was really neat to see how things that are in our past and are hard to remember or deal with, can totally change over time and now I am super proud of that.

So if someone made fun of you, maybe one day it will be one of your favorite qualities about yourself.

Day 3447 – The Secret To Getting Good Sleep

One of the bigger changes in our lives was getting more sleep. There are a few things we’ve started to do or stopped doing to achieve this.

Honestly, the biggest thing is sleeping on the floor. I realize it’s not for everyone but I get the best sleep sleeping on the floor.

One of the most important parts of that good night sleep is starting the night before. One thing I do is writing my to-do list for the next day. Sometimes this is done a week in advance because some things in my workday are the same. I have a stack of seven yellow pads for each day. Knowing I have those lists really does keep my mind at rest.

Some nights, if we happen to go to sleep at the same time, we’ll spend some time sharing what we’re thankful for. We try to go to bed at a reasonable hour or pushing our wakeup time to make sure we get the full night we need.

Sleep is one of those areas that we try to be very serious about. Not getting enough can cause so many problems, it’s just not worth the “short-term gains.”

What is your secret to good sleep?

Day 3446 – People May Remember You For A Long Time – or – Beaumont Pottery In Maryland

Years ago…we’re talkin’ like 20 years…I worked at Blockbuster. There was a couple who came in often and at one point, offered me a job at their pottery shop. At the time, I was happy at Blockbuster (it’s still one of my favorite jobs), so I turned them down.

I’ve told Bret this story a few times, mostly when we drove past the shop on the way to our business partners’ home. I’d also mention that I wanted to stop in but we never did, they were either closed or we were running late. A few months back, we finally stopped.

The shop itself is so much fun to browse, with tons of beautiful pieces of pottery, it is an experience. While looking around, I came across the potter, eating his lunch. He joked about this and then said, wait, I know you.

This guy hadn’t seen me in nearly two decades and he remembered me. Now, to be fair, I look pretty similar to my 16-year-old self, with the addition of a few grey hairs and lots of laugh lines. The wife actually remembered me too.

Thinking back on this it reminds me of the weight we carry of putting our best selves out there. People do remember you, so give them something good to remember.

Day 3444 – The Benefits Of A Sober Friend

– You always have a designated driver.

– You have someone to watch your back if you’ve had too much to drink and some random person is hitting on you.

– You’ll know if you have boogers in your nose.

– You’ll (depending on the sober friend) have someone who can go grab you more to drink.

Day 3442 – The Importance Of Routines And Systems In Your Life

One thing I’m constantly refining and fine-tuning are my routines and systems. I pay attention to my habits and try to change the bad ones and add the good ones.

A great current example of my systems at work is the reprinting of my to-do list. I’ve talked before that I have multiple to-do lists – daily ones written on notepads and a printed weekly one. The printed to-do list is mostly a guide for the week, what I want to blog about, keeping my days organized, seeing what’s scheduled, and big reminders on each day.

I just finished printing out my to-dos for the next few weeks. We’re going to Cali for the holidays, so being organized in what needs to be done is pretty important. I plotted out what I want to blog about for most of the days and other priority things that need to be done.

It’s a really nice feeling knowing that I have a plan for the coming weeks. I’m currently reading It Doesn’t Have To Be Crazy At Work, and the biggest thing is about having a calm work environment and how important that is. While I have a pretty decently calm environment and day, there are some things that add to “not calm” so I’m working on trying to minimize them. Having my to-dos all ready to go definitely adds to the calm.

I have checklists for so many areas of my life and it really helps to have a workflow for things you do often – because it can be easy to miss something. This is where Asana is my best friend, because I can set up those recurring reminders and know things will get done.

Do you have routines and systems in your life?
