About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 3026 – Unplugging For A Weekend – How Did It Go?

We returned yesterday from two nights away. I put my phone on airplane mode for the drive up to listen to music, and then turned it off when we arrived. The first night at the fire was a little weird, because I couldn’t read or write since it was so dark. And when I was the only one at the fire, I was left with only my thoughts. The second day, I didn’t really think about my phone at all. There was something that happened that required getting in touch with us, but thankfully Bret had his phone on. This led me to turn on my phone the last morning, otherwise it would have stayed off until we got home.

I learned a lot about myself this weekend. I have a totally unhealthy attachment to my phone, and coping mechanisms of playing games and obsessively checking different apps. It was a great reminder that I don’t need to be attached to my phone 24/7, and I really want to bring this into my day to day life. Maybe doing things like, only checking it a few times a day, and getting back into only going on social media two times a day. We’ll see how it logistically fits in. But I have to say, it felt SO good not being attached to my phone.

While I was there, I read a really great book, The Lazy Guru’s Guide to Life: A Mindful Approach to Achieving More by Doing Less* by Laurence Shorter. It really broke down what it means to process what happens in our lives. There was a whole section on the “shoulds” that sometimes rule our lives. It talked about how to stop, process, and let things go. It was filled with pictures, and I loved it. I really wish there were more books like this. Big ideas broken down into easy to process and understand sentences….with pictures. If you know of any books like this, let me know!

Since I didn’t have my phone, I didn’t take any pictures. Again, thankfully Bret had his phone and did. πŸ™‚

Day 3024 – How To Unplug

I unplug in a lot of ways in my daily life, from turning off notifications at certain times, to stepping away from the computer. I’m away this weekend, and hopefully unplugged. My intention is to leave my phone packed away and turned off after I arrive at my destination.

So how do you unplug, and ACTUALLY unplug?
– turn off your devices, and pack them where they’re hard to get to.
– ensure you’ve taken care of all your tasks before you leave. For example, I wrote this blog post on Thursday night.
– Have other things to fill your unplugged time. I will have a few books, my journal, and a campfire to keep me distracted.
– trust that anything that might be an emergency can wait. There are so few emergencies that actually happen that we worry about.

How do you unplug?

Day 3023 – Out Of The Office

We’re heading out today for our potentially last camping trip of the year. I think I’m actually going to completely turn off my phone while I’m away, which is SO new for me. So catch y’all next week! (But enjoy the scheduled posts!)

Day 3022 – Another Book That Changed My Life – Reading People By Anne Bogel

In case you’re brand spankin’ new, you know I love to read. I read all the time. One person who has helped me embrace my reading even more, is Anne Bogel of Modern Mrs. Darcy. She has been sharing about a book she wrote for a while, and after weeks of waiting, I finally got the audio version from the library. Audio books are harder for me to get through because I just don’t have the time to fit them in and listen as much as I would sit down to read. Thankfully, one thing I’m learning about myself is the need to break up my afternoons with a walk, dance party, and laughing like crazy. In my short walks, I’ve been making my way through the book. I’ve also gotten in a few chunks while driving to my job in Annapolis. I JUST finished last night, and I have to say, AMAZING! I’m a big fan of personality tests, and so is she. The book is about a number of different personality tests, and how they apply to your life. I found myself nodding along, and saying things like YES! in my head…..or out loud…. Truly getting to know yourself, knowing what you can and can’t handle, and not judging what you find has been huge in my life over the past few years. I’ve learned some things totally stress me out and I just can’t handle too much of it…or I have to cut it out completely. Things like nudity in movies, alcohol, or the books I read – I really can’t read some of the types of books I used to. I can’t watch some of the shows I used to. I can’t do some of the things I used to.

So to find a book that helps me further know myself, and embrace myself, gives me strength to continue in the path and forge ahead without apology. It also gave me some insight into others. So give Reading People* a listen, or a purchase. Or put in a hold request at the library. One thing I LOVE about Anne, is that she has no judgement for how you read a book.

Since I have no photo of her book, here’s a pretty picture. πŸ˜€
