About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 3376 – Taking Facebook Off My Phone And What I’ve Learned About Myself Since I Did

I mentioned last week that I took Facebook and Messenger off my phone, as well as blocking Facebook on my mobile browser and I wanted to give a little bit of an update.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed is how much of a habit it was to check Facebook. There have been so many times I’ve had the impulse to check it. Not having it on the phone and having little else to check, has forced me to put it down much more often.

It makes my mornings so much better and freer. Only checking Facebook on my desktop helps to keep it in one place, especially mentally. There is no reason to check Facebook dozens of times a day, really.

I also realized that I seek distraction a LOT of my day. I seem to find any excuse to “relax” “veg” “etc” during my work day. This was an especially good reminder.

I honestly don’t miss it.

Day 3375 – Photos From Our Thrice Concert

Whooooo, what a great concert! Bret and I are both feeling our age after being in the mosh pit, to be sure. It was the longest set we’ve seen them play and they were amazing as always.

The mosh pit was a good one and the guys weren’t jerks and looked out for me.

We didn’t know/weren’t that interested in the first two bands, so we found our way to the upstairs. We got a great view to the side of the stage. I got to chatting with the security guard, and she actually let me get even close for this epic shot. After this, I headed down to the pit.

Day 3374 – Our Sixth Thrice Concert Tonight!!!!

I’ve have absolutely loved Thrice for years. I can’t remember who introduced me to them, or the exact year/album I started listening. But they have become the soundtrack of my life. Their songs are so deep and have so many meanings.

When I married Bret, in many ways, I had NO idea what I was in for in that I gained so much more than I expected. I gained a business partner, my very best friend, and a fellow Thrice lover.

Today we are attending our sixth Thrice concert (my seventh) and I just can’t wait! It’s so much fun to mosh together, sing along together, and just all around enjoy this amazing band. If you haven’t listened to them yet, please please please check them out. Specifically – Firebreather, For Miles, The Artist In The Ambulance, Image of the Invisible, In Exile, Beggars, Come All You Weary, and Phoenix Ignition.

I doubt we’ll get muddy like this again, but you know we’ll be sweaty messes after the pit!

Day 3373 – The Importance Of Getting Out Of The House As A Creative

Nearly every week, I meet up with a local custom jewelry designer and have a co-working meeting. What’s really really really awesome is there is some chatting, varying based on the type of week either of us is having, but for the most part it’s a “hey, how are you?” “Good? Great, let’s get to work.” Our headphones go in and we barely talk for a good two hours. Friends, having a co-working friend who will work when you work and not take it personally when you have headphones in, is priceless.

The productivity varies each week too, but most weeks, I get a lot done. I work on my travel blog for the most part, but on some days where I’m really far behind (haha, like today where I’m writing on this blog at nearly 3 pm versus the normal 8/9 am).

As I’ve had this practice, I’ve found how much it really makes a difference in my week. These days, I’m pretty busy with our real estate investing business. So to have a few hours each week to get out is really awesome.

The photo below was taken at our regular stop a few months back. There is such a great vibe here in the coffee shop. There’s never any rush to leave. The staff is really nice and I just love being here.

Day 3372 – When You Have To Wait A Long Time For Things – or – The Other 40 Year Wait For Moses

This post has been marinating for a while for me. If you know the different adventures of different biblical characters, you likely know about the Israelites and Moses wandering around the desert for 40 years. But what about the 40 years BEFORE that when Moses spent time in Midian?

As I’ve been reading through the Bible this year (using the Discipleship Journal Bible Reading Plan, which is reading out of four parts of the Bible each day). As I read through the old testament, what strikes me most is how long some things took. What never hit me until the last few years is that Moses spent FORTY years in Midian.

I can almost mentally understand forty years, being at the ripe old age of 36 and some change. I think about how long it took me to finally wake up, take God at His word, and get sober (about nine years). I think about how long it took me to grow and change in different ways, and I remember Moses and I’m encouraged.

Basically, it’s ok if something takes me a really long time. Some things in life do.

So if you’re stuck in your time in the desert, or your time in Midian, remember, you’re in good company of “having to wait a long time for something.”
