About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2825 – How Traffic Jams And Other Challenges Change Our Lives

Late last night, I finished reading A Fall of Marigolds* by Susan Meissner. It was a moving story, and I shed my share of tears. It was partly about 9/11, and partly about another tragedy. It made me think back to that day, and it made me think about how events in our lives impact things down the line. I found my journal entry about that day this morning. I was dating another guy at the time but, looking back, I don’t think, man, here’s someone I didn’t end up with, I see a step in my journey to Bret. This ex lived out of state, and we had a long distance relationship for a few years. Little did I know that relationship would help prepare me for the long distance relationship with Bret. The deaths of young friends I had to walk through, prepared me to truly say and believe “Bret will come back to me, or he will not.” I look back on the day we met, and remember the traffic jam that forced Bret to go through with meet me.

There are so many things that come across our path that are hard, that are wonderful, that will have an impact down the line. A traffic jam today, could lead you to the love of your life. A failed relationship could be the trial you need to walk through to give you strength for the better relationship later.

I’m reminded how important it is to keep a record of these things. I’m so thankful that 2001 Jennilyn wrote her thoughts and fears down. I had forgotten that I was fearful in the days and months after 9/11. How I was fearful of thunder. How a stalling plane frightened me. I tend to block a lot out of my brain. I just don’t keep a lot up there. Ha ha, there is so much going on up there already!

So I challenge you today to start/continue journaling. Give your future self a record of the path you’ve taken, so you can look back and connect the dots, and see how you were changed.

When was the last time you journaled?

Day 2824 – How To Travel More

As I’m writing my book on how to plan a road trip on any budget, I am getting a serious itch to travel, and especially to take a road trip. I love encouraging others to travel and to follow their dreams. Instead of reinventing the wheel today, I wanted to share links to some previous posts about paying off debt, getting cheap flights, and road trip advice.

One of the biggest things I want to help people fight is the “I wish I could do that someday” or “I’ll never afford to…” or “it must be nice to XYZ.” I love pushing people to realize you CAN do it some day, you CAN afford to XYZ, and you can XYZ. Even if that day is 10 years down the road, that is a date you can look forward to.

So what is your fear? Why don’t you travel more? What holds you back? Let me know in the comments below.

Day 2822 – We’ve Always Been A Little Different

2820 days ago, we were on our honeymoon. We decided to go to Poughkeepsie. It was close to the Gunks, where we went to do some rock climbing, and it was just far enough away to be a road trip. Funny that we started our life together on a road trip. It’s been in our blood since the beginning!

As I was researching the town, I found an Irish pub and we were so excited to try it. During the meal, we asked our server if they had any souvenirs, she said no. But she came back later and had two glasses for us, and she gave them to us for free. We said, wow! Thank you so much! We’re here on our honeymoon, and you just made our day! She was surprised, and asked, I’m sorry…but why did you come here? We laughed a mentioned it was close to climbing and all that jazz.

As I’m enjoying my afternoon coffee out of said glass, I realize we’ve always been different….and we haven’t cared what others thought.

So even if you think you’re a little different, it’s ok, there’s two folks who are a little different too. 🙂 And even if you think your home town isn’t that special, to a couple of honeymooners, it might be.
