About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2956 – What’s On My Travel Bucket List

I’m thankful to be pretty well traveled in the United States. I’m currently at 37 states visited (with Bret). After chasing the eclipse in a week, hopefully we’ll be at 38, but it all depends on weather. We have a loose goal of visiting all 50 states before traveling internationally. I would love to see so many things, but here are a few of my top picks.

Ireland When I was still drinking, I couldn’t wait to try a Guinness at the brewery in Ireland. Now that I’m sober, I can’t wait to tour the brewery and just enjoy the land.

Antarctica One of my clients regularly works in Antarctica, and I’ve seen so many amazing pictures. I hope to one day make it down while she’s there.

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta While researching living out of an RV, this was an oft discussed destination. It looks like a total blast.

Hiking all 46 high peaks I grew up visiting Lake Placid, NY every summer and some winters. It is a truly magical place. There are 46 mountains that fall into the category of high peaks. I would love to say I’m a ’46er and hike them all.

Visit the USMC museum in VA It’s funny this is on my list, because I’ve been in Quantico so many times, and it’s so close. But I’ve always had a reason that I couldn’t stop by. Maybe I can knock this one out while we chase the sun and moon!

This is just the tip of the iceberg of my bucket list. I have a large list in my personal Asana account. This doesn’t even include my Roadtrippers saved places. I have a feeling my bucket list will always grow, and I will constantly find more that I want to see. I sure am glad I have a spouse who loves to travel too. πŸ™‚

Bonus – Riverwalk again We fell in love with Riverwalk when we visited in 2014. We’ve talked about going back and staying in a hotel on the river. Definitely on the list. πŸ™‚

Day 2955 – 200 Books Read In 2017! – or – Reading Goals

Last year, my reading goal was 75 books, last night, I hit 200 books read this year. In an effort to be open about what I read, and that it’s not THAT impressive, of those 200 books, 146 of them are children’s picture books. I do count books like my 200th book, pictured below, as a “full length” book. I have read some amazing books this year so far. Some hilarious and awesome children’s picture books (this is my top rated children’s books on my Goodreads account – feel free to friend me while you’re there!), business books that have changed my life*, and books that made me live every day like a child*. I started the year with a few reading challenges, and they pushed me to try new books, and pick up things I never would have thought to read. I haven’t really looked at them in a while, but it’s nice to know I have them in case I need some reading inspiration.

I feel as though a number of the books I’ve read this year have had small things that change a character’s life. It’s fascinating that our lives can change so quickly by a small change. Whether it’s finding a bracelet or winning a trip or finding an urn from the other side of the country. I want to remember this as I take small steps towards my big goals.

If I’ve learned anything in this year of massive reading, it’s that there are so many more books to read. I am so thankful for public libraries, and will continue to be an advocate of using them. Think about it this way – your tax dollars are paying for it, so use it!

Another big lesson is there is much joy and wisdom to be found in children’s picture books. Don’t write them off because they’re in the kids section. Check out my link above to my favorite children’s books I’ve read this year.

I think it’s fitting that this was my 200th book. πŸ™‚

Day 2954 – How To Be Thankful When Life Slows Your Pace

I feel like I’m finally on the mend today, which is good because I have some work for one of my clients today! It was hard to take it easy this week. I thought this week would be one of knocking out a number of projects, making progress on things that have been sitting for a while, and just an all around catch up week. I was not expecting to get sick, and stuck in bed most of the week. But instead of getting discouraged in my lack of productivity, I decided to be thankful. Here are a handful of the things I AM thankful for this week:

– That Bret closed on his second house, which takes a little of the financial burden off me.
– That my clients are super understanding, and care about my health most of all.
– That it is a slow season on all fronts (Bret’s out of school, client projects are slower right now, etc)
– That I have jobs that allow me to take breaks when I need to.
– That I have learned over the years to listen to my body, and not push things.
– That the imperative things were accomplished.

What about you? What are you thankful for when life forces you to slow down?

Day 2953 – Happy Play In The Sand Day!

When I saw this day on my fun calendar, I thought, man, I need some ocean and sand soon! Hopefully we’ll get to swing by the ocean on our way to or from the eclipse!

Day 2952 – Bret Made Me Breakfast, What?!?!

As I woke this morning, I heard noises in the kitchen. It sounded like Bret was doing the dishes. As I emerged from my rest, I saw I was wrong. Bret was making breakfast! He scrambled eggs. He fried ham. He flipped pancakes. I was just shocked. For no reason whatsoever, he made me breakfast. And I have to say, did a darn fine job on the scrambled eggs!
