About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 3451 – Do We Still Fly With One Carry-On Each?

Today I wanted to reshare a video we made about flying with only one carry-on each.

So do we still travel with just one carry-on each? You better believe it! It makes flying so much easier and less stressful.

Day 3450 – What To Expect From Me The Next Few Weeks

This weekend, we are leaving for a nine-day trip to California. I want to try to be as present as I can, so I’m scheduling my blog posts while I’m gone. I’ll be sharing some of my most favorite and most popular posts. If I’m delayed in responding to comments, that’s why. I’ll also likely try to stay off social media too (haha, we’ll see how that goes!)

Peace out homeslices, here’s what our view will be very soon!

Day 3449 – TBT To Our 2013 Road Trip

Five years ago today, we were starting our 2013 road trip across the country. In some ways, I wish we were making the drive again this year. I love the freedom of the drive and having a car the whole time.

But I have to say, arriving the same day via plane is pretty nice. This year we’re renting a car the whole time, which is the first time we’ve done so.

This was also the trip where I wore my Ravens jersey for a few days straight, pretty sure it stood up on its own…

Day 3448 – Sometimes Bad Memories Change Over Time

Y’all know I just loved Jen Sincero’s You Are A Badass At Making Money. One of my favorite parts was a story about some goats. I won’t give any of that away, you’ll just have to read it for yourself. But I strive to be like those goats.

I was reminded of an incident of bullying/teasing/whatever you want to call it when I was around 15. Some guy that was hanging around my friend group called me goat and made goat noises because I had some fuzz above my lip. For a long time, remembering that made me feel bad about myself. But looking back now, I think, wow, calling me a goat is a GREAT compliment! (lol, again, you gotta read the story in the book).

It was really neat to see how things that are in our past and are hard to remember or deal with, can totally change over time and now I am super proud of that.

So if someone made fun of you, maybe one day it will be one of your favorite qualities about yourself.

Day 3447 – The Secret To Getting Good Sleep

One of the bigger changes in our lives was getting more sleep. There are a few things we’ve started to do or stopped doing to achieve this.

Honestly, the biggest thing is sleeping on the floor. I realize it’s not for everyone but I get the best sleep sleeping on the floor.

One of the most important parts of that good night sleep is starting the night before. One thing I do is writing my to-do list for the next day. Sometimes this is done a week in advance because some things in my workday are the same. I have a stack of seven yellow pads for each day. Knowing I have those lists really does keep my mind at rest.

Some nights, if we happen to go to sleep at the same time, we’ll spend some time sharing what we’re thankful for. We try to go to bed at a reasonable hour or pushing our wakeup time to make sure we get the full night we need.

Sleep is one of those areas that we try to be very serious about. Not getting enough can cause so many problems, it’s just not worth the “short-term gains.”

What is your secret to good sleep?
