About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2996 – Different Forms Of Progress

There are lots of ways to see progress you’ve made. Whether it’s a checklist like I’ve blogged about before, a full journal, or a physical book, to name a few.

Today I got a pretty stark reminder of how far I’ve come, how much I’ve changed, and in some ways how I’m nothing like I was 9 years ago.

I had some pretty unhealthy habits in the past, from eating junk food, to inhaling soda and energy drinks, to not working out, and you know, drinking like a fish. I seem to forget how much I’ve changed in my physical appearance. When I finally quit drinking, I lost a lot of weight. In the last few years, I drink soda a lot less, only have an energy drink maybe once a week, and eat pretty healthy and clean.

Here’s the stark reminder of how far I’ve come….

Compared to almost now (this was from December)

But here’s the thing, without a comparison, it’s hard to know how much you’ve changed. It’s hard to see how unhealthy you’ve become. I am so grateful for a very patient husband (who was only my fiance in the picture above!) who has encouraged me to care about my health but still loved me when I was struggling.

Have you compared yourself to your past self recently? How do you see how much you’ve changed?

Day 2995 – What Happens When I Want To Laugh Out Loud, But Can’t

I am a very loud laugher. I’m one of those people that you hear laughing, and turn and look, like, “what is that loud sound???” But hey, I’d rather be a loud laugher than a loud complainer.

Yesterday, I was chatting with a friend who said something very funny. Unfortunately for my laughing, Bret was on the phone…..so I had to laugh without a sound. Not fun, very painful, but it makes for a really fun picture!

Day 2994 – What It Takes To Finally Have A Breakthrough

I blogged about the power of consistency last week, and a new method I’m trying – the “don’t break the chain.” Basically, you do something every day and it creates momentum and you don’t want to miss a day and “break the chain.” I’ve also been very motivated by the little steps every day approach. I created a new checklist for 5 areas I want to work on – writing, working out, reading a book on book publishing, FINALLY finishing Tools Of The Titans, and building a Pinterest Profile for this blog.

This morning’s workout was a PR for pushups in a minute. I told Bret about it as well as saying, oh hey, I’ve done a workout every day for the past 18 days. Now, disclaimer, some days a “workout” is purposeful stretching, or how many of X can I do in a minute, but I’d rather do a minute every day instead of my previous – workout a few times a week, miss two weeks, etc. This is the longest stretch I have been consistent….ever. My longest previously was 12 days, and that was only this year. Bret always says, you can go too fast, but you can never go too slow with working out. I’m glad I finally listened to this great advice!

I’m a big believer in keeping track of certain things so you can look back and see how far you’ve come. I’m already at 6 days with my new “small steps” additions. I’m making progress through two books that I’ve been meaning to read, and I’m taking steps on Pinterest. It’s SO nice to feel like all of the important things are complete by 7/8 a.m. before I even begin my other work.

What about you? What motivates you to actually hit your goals?

Day 2993 – I’m Not Hungover Today!

Last night, I was chatting with Bret about my alcoholism memoir. We were talking about a time when I was so drunk I didn’t notice something I should have. I mentioned how much I love not having the “morning after” conversations with him anymore. Oh there were so many of those mornings. So many times I would tell Bret I quit for good, when it was just something to say to diffuse the situation. As we were talking, I just threw my hands up in the air and I said I’m not hungover today! I love being sober!

I never want to get over the wonder of this fact. I never want to take it for granted that I was completely transformed. I never want to forget how much I’ve grown.

And thanks to YOU, yes YOU dear reader. If it wasn’t for you being interested in my alcoholism stories, I would never have thought to write a memoir about my alcoholism and sobriety. It has been a great process so far.

What is something you take for granted you can be thankful for today?

I was sooooo intoxicated in this photo…..though, I’ll make that face stone sober. 😀

Day 2992 – Great Cream Of Crab Soup – Sometimes It’s Best At Random Places

One thing I try to get at every place it is offered is cream of crab soup. I adore it. I went to an Italian Deli/Cafe a few years back, and found an amazing cream of crab soup (and shrimp salad too). A few days back, Bret and I went out for a mini date (these seem to be happening a lot!) and I knew exactly what I was ordering. No coffee for me thanks! I’ll take the soup!

I have to say, you KNOW a place is good when they give you an Old Bay shaker as big as your cream of crab soup!
