Day 2969 – Sundays = Re-Grouping – or – Growing Businesses With Bret Is So Fun

Today has mostly been spent in the brainstorming, and re-grouping state of mind. Bret and I had a long conversation about our roles in each of our businesses and daily life. It was very helpful to have his insight into my life and work, and that I could speak into his life. There are lots of intersections in both. I am so grateful for where we both are in our lives. We are open to change and we are open to correction. We have grown SO much in how we talk about things, and knowing our communication styles. We can see when one of us is talking about things in one way (like the planning portion) and the other is talking in the execution (how are we going to do this?)

I didn’t really learn anything I didn’t know about myself through the conversation, but it helped me to focus on the important and mentally cut out the not important. It’s a great way to head into my next work week.

What are you up to this Sunday?

Day 1767 – Is It Possible To Work With Your Spouse?

Bret and I were chatting out our most recent wedding yesterday; things I learned, things we could improve on next time (there’s ALWAYS something!) and progress we’ve made over the years. He said, you know, I think it’s like wedding XX for me! I can’t remember what number he said, so I decided to look it up.

I’ve shot 51 weddings so far and Bret has shot 32!! I can’t believe we’ve shot 32 weddings in the last 4 and a half years! I also love how much we’ve grown as business owners, photographers and as a couple. We work together SO well!

So thank you Bret, for standing by me, encouraging me and challenging me to become better at everything in my life. I would not be the business owner, photographer or person I am today if it weren’t for you. Love.

Also, thanks for helping me to prove that you can work with your spouse and it can be fantastic!

Day 1657 – Spending Time With My Husband

Can I just say that I have LOVED the last two weeks?? I have spent more quality time with my husband in the last two weeks than I have in probably the last year! Whew! It’s been so refreshing knowing he’s done with college. The last few weeks have been filled with interviews and subbing for him…but for the most part, we’ve been able to hang out more! It’s been wonderful to remember why I freakin’ love this guy and growing closer as a couple.

Bonus for me is spending more time together working on the photography business. Today, we hung some of our work at the new Be More Inspired wedding studio! Bret has such a good eye for things that it was great to have him there! And nice to have one of us hold the picture and mark where the nail should go!

Here’s a little sneaky peek! To get the full experience, stop by the open house on Saturday!

Day 1285 – The Secret To Working With Your Spouse Is…

As you know, my husband is now a business owner. This has been a super exciting time, but also challenging. Being a business owner, you’re CONSTANTLY thinking about your business. You eat, sleep and breathe your business. When it was just the photography business, I only had to contend with school and work in Bret’s thoughts when we had a conversation. Now, there is the personal training. Don’t get me wrong, I am SOOOOO excited for Bret! It helps motivate me to work even harder! That fire when you first start a business is contagious! But, if I have to ask his advice on something, it has to be a very…. ::hold his face and make him look at me:: “Bret! I have to ask you a question!” Sometimes this means waiting until he finishes up what he’s working on. Sometimes it means we have to talk about it later. One of our “don’t talk to me, interrupt me, etc” phrases is….”I’m zoning”…for me this normally means I’m editing awesome picture and listening to Metallica (is it weird that a wedding photographer loves editing pictures with hard rock??)

Anyways, today I was getting a little stressed out about things. So I said, ok, dude, I need you for TWO minutes. I turned up the music and we danced. Hoping, jumping, tossing our arms in the air, dancing. For a good 3-5 minutes. It was AWESOME. I got the stressed energy out and got a mini workout. So! If you work with your spouse….or your family member….or your friend….or even people you don’t really get along with….just dance for a few minutes. It really works. 🙂
