Day 1768 – What Does A Typical Work Day Look Like For A Wedding Photographer?

You may be wondering what my typical work days are like. I know I get asked every so often about my blog (how do you find time to blog every day??) I get the “that must be a fun job!” So I figured a little behind the scenes of my “office days” was in order.

After I get up, I check my emails and social media to make sure I don’t have anything pressing to respond to.

I’ll try to have my devotions as early as possible in my day. Ha ha, but I also have to be awake enough to process them!

After that, I respond to any emails/posts/etc that I didn’t earlier.

I try to write my blog post as early as possible as well. There are some days where I have NO idea what to post, so I put that off until something comes to me.

My to-do list is set up in two sections. The top is a Sunday through Saturday list. Each day I have devotions, workout, the current blog post day, Outlook tasks (I keep some reminders in Outlook and some on my multiple to-do lists….I probably need to clean up this aspect a little bit!) and some weeks, editing. Besides that, I list out items that have to be done that day (bank, library, meetings) and tasks I’d like to finish that day. The second section is broken down into several lists (money generating tasks, money already made tasks, personal, and a few random lists that change). I used to have a HUGE list in this second section, but I found that section would just keep growing and growing and never get completed. So I moved more items to my longer to-do list…I actually have it saved as The Largest To Do List Ever Created. At one point it was actually 10 pages long! Eeep! Over the years, I’ve whittled it down to 3-4 pages. I finally organized that into topics/areas.

I’ll try to read for at least 30 minutes a day.

Sometimes my main tasks for the day will take 30 minutes to an hour. If I have just shot a wedding or a portrait session, I’ll spend several hours or most of the day editing.

Some days, I’ll attend a workshop (going to a night time photography one in a few weeks!) or I’ll attend another photographer’s studio for a discussion on various topics. Other days, I’ll meet up with photographers or other wedding vendors just to chat about work and life.

Yesterday, I did something a little outside of my normal work day. It was one of those days where I was getting stir crazy (working in front of a computer in the basement for 6-10 hours a day can get old quick!) So I packed up my to-do list, computer and some notes I’ve been meaning to do something with for a while.

I spent about 3 hours in Panera Bread working on my next wedding timeline and my social media schedule. Can I just say that it has taken me WAY too long to finalize this?! I’ve been keeping notes on how I should approach social media for some time now. I’ve been putting it off and putting it off…..and putting it off some more! But being out of the house and pretty restricted to what I could do (the internet wasn’t working well on my computer), it forced me to finally get it done!

I also got to try a delicious new to me dish! The chicken tortellini!

Day 1761 – Behind The Scenes Of Wedding Photographers At Mountain Branch

You may think wedding photography is a glamorous job. You may think it’s fun. You may think it’s hard work. It isn’t too glamorous really….I’ve used my pant leg to dry off flower stems….I’ve spilled crab soup on my shoe….and let’s not talk about how gross we are after a 10-12 hour day. But it is SO much fun and it’s VERY hard work. Oh baby do I love it!

Last year, I started to do behind the scenes blog posts. I think y’all like them, right? (Comment below to let me know what you think!) My main reason to share these photos is because they’d never get seen if I didn’t share them here! These are not photos that will end up in the bride and groom’s wedding album. But hopefully they’ll give you a chuckle.

I always have a ton of pictures of Bret and myself after the wedding, mostly because we use each other to test out the lighting. Neither of us really enjoy getting our picture taken.

I mean, I can’t even smile right!

day_01761a

Hide the teeth?

day_01761b

Well, I’ll just pretend I’m not watching.

day_01761c

This wedding, we had a third shooter, Zephan of ZMBmedia! I guess he’s not used to the many pictures we take to test the light, because he didn’t seem to mind having his picture taken! 🙂

day_01761g

I asked Zephan to take some pictures of me shoot during the day. He got this one of me before the wedding. It’s my current favorite picture of myself. Thanks again Zephan!

day_01761h

There’s a lot of squatting in wedding photography.

day_01761i

I LOVE this shot!!

day_01761j

I can’t tell if this is a yoga pose or if I’m trying to fit in a box.

day_01761k

A lot of squatting.

day_01761l

There’s also excitement! Bret and I were SO thrilled with this part of the formals! We were taken on golf carts to this pond. It was only us, the golf cart drivers and the bride and groom! That’s a photographer’s dream right there!

day_01761m

When we test out the light for introductions, I feel like Bret walks like he’s on the cat walk…every time.

day_01761n

This is Bret’s “I really don’t want my picture taken now” pose.

day_01761o

“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t see you standing there…”

day_01761p

“Oh! You want a picture!”

day_01761q

“Maybe if I make a cute pose you’ll leave me alone.”

day_01761r

“No? Ok, well, I’m not looking at you then.”

day_01761s

“Fine, but this is the last one!”

day_01761t

“Dang it Jen! Well, I’m going to eat some cake then!”

day_01761v

I love this moment where Bret is helping Lauren photo bomb the photo booth!

day_01761w

Now, if you get BOTH of us in front of the camera, we get a little cray cray.

day_01761x

day_01761y

At the end of the day, all of our silliness and goofing off are worth it to get a shot like this with our couple. 🙂

Day 1758 – Mountain Branch Wedding Behind The Scenes Sneak Peek!

For this wedding, I had a new second/third shooter for part of the day! Zephan of ZMBmedia! He was an amazing addition to the team! He also does video of all kinds! If you need a videographer, check out his stuff!

He got a great shot of me before the wedding started! I’m so excited about it, I wanted to share it now! Don’t worry, you’ll get to see more behind the scenes shots later.
