Day 3076 – Why Habits Are So Important

As I’ve been making my way through my morning, very slowly and much later than normal, I realized that my morning habits are so ingrained, that I was able to move through them easily. My brain knew what to do next. My morning “always dos” are devotions, writing, working out (though when I’m sick I mark the day as a rest day), reading a book about marketing my books on Amazon, reading Tools of the Titans (SO close to the end!), working on my Pinterest account, blogging, and posting in my Facebook group (Monday through Friday). These are things that happen every day, pretty much no matter what. Because of these habits, I’m making progress towards several goals, even if it’s slow progress.

So while I’m definitely not operating at 100%, the important things are getting done.

Do you do anything every day, no matter what?

Day 3072 – Pretend To Be A Time Traveler Day

I had a few ideas how to “celebrate” this fun day, but I thought the best way would be to express thankfulness for things I take for granted, that a time traveler from 500 years ago would be in awe of.

Running water – without a limit of how much I can use.

Hot water.

A toilet, I mean, seriously, when was the last time you thought about this? Ha ha, go camping in the woods for a few days to get an idea.

A super computer with access to pretty much every bit of information in the world….in my back pocket.

The ability to share my ideas with an unlimited number of people.

A fridge to keep my food fresh for days.

The ability to have warm air or cold air, depending on the season.

Electricity.

What’s crazy, is all of these things are expected now. These are all normal.

If you were a time traveler, where would you go?

Day 3071 – Why You Shouldn’t Ask “When Are You Having Kids?” – or – Things I’ve Learned From Not Having Kids – repost

A friend of mine shared a post about infertility, and it made me want to reshare this post. As you’ll be seeing lots of people this holiday season, take a few minutes to think about what you’re asking people you see. This is a very sensitive topic and one that I think people think is ok to ask about, but you truly have no idea what someone’s journey is.

If you’ve read this blog any amount of time, you know Bret and I are not normal in a lot of ways. From sleeping on the floor, to having no real furniture, we are just weirdos. People don’t understand us sometimes, but that’s fine, we’re happy with our life.

Here’s another “not normal” thing to add to the long list of “Jen and Bret are weird” – We aren’t planning on having kids.

It’s something we didn’t expect. Both of us came from big families and figured we’d have a big family too. As we grew in our marriage, God made it clear kids probably weren’t in our future. When we meditate on our life, kids just aren’t in the picture. It is something we have prayed about, thought a lot about, and talked a lot about. Most of the time, when people ask or comment about us having kids, we laugh it off. “Ha ha, oh we’ll see!” It’s a minor thing to us when people bring it up. Something we shrug off like reactions to us sleeping on the floor. Even if we tell them we aren’t planning on having kids, and they follow up with, “Oh you’ll change your mind.” It isn’t a big deal to us.

But then we thought about things in a different light – what if we DID want kids and we couldn’t or were having a hard time getting pregnant? What if we had lost children?

This is when the desire to share this became about others.

We have a lot of people in our world that have struggled to have kids and desperately want kids.

I am writing this for them.

Please take a few minutes to look at someone’s situation from another angle before you ask “When are you having kids?!” Pause and ask yourself if it’s an appropriate question and time to ask. It may have been easy for you and your spouse to get pregnant. You may have several kids. You may not know that the person you’re asking has been trying, desperately, for years to get pregnant. You may not know of the tears, the heartache, the miscarriages.

Think about asking instead “Do you want kids?” or maybe, just maybe, don’t ask about their plans on having kids or not. If you don’t know if they can have kids or not, it’s for a reason. I understand, it’s a natural question. But it’s a really personal one. Trust me, I understand where the questions come from. In our society, there’s a “natural” timeline of steps.

Out of my deep love for those in my life that struggle with this – please stop asking them when they’re going to have kids. Please stop joking that you’re pregnant on April 1st. Please take a minute to think before you speak. And if you still want to ask someone questions like this, go ahead and just ask me.

Day 3070 – How Hard Things Lead To The Best Things

It’s funny looking back, but our first cross country road trip happened because we didn’t have much money. It’s pretty darn pricey to fly during the holidays (the average just for flights for us is about $1000-1500+). When Bret was in school, we had a lot more flexibility in our schedule of when we could travel. We figured it would be cheaper to drive across the country than to fly. I’ve talked about this before, but I was struck today with the thought that this thing that I love so very much (road trip travel), happened because of a very hard time in our lives. It makes me wonder what the hard things I’m going through are preparing me for down the road.

Deaths of friends lead to a life of enjoying every day, and no regrets.

My alcoholism lead to sharing my struggles with others.

My money struggles lead to thankfulness every time we pay something off as soon as it’s charged.

And our need to drive thousands of miles to save money lead to one of my deepest passions.

Take heart friends, the very thing that’s dragging you down today, may be what changes your life.

Day 3069 – I Read My 300th Book This Year Yesterday, And I’m Embarrassed To Say What It Was

If you’ve been following along this year, you know I set a big goal for my reading in 2017 – 300 books. I hit it yesterday, and I am so pumped. I learned, I laughed, I stopped reading some, I found new favorite books. As it turns out, the 300th book was You Have To F@*#%&@ Eat. You probably remember that I am pretty “strict” on what I read, watch, and listen to. There are times when language affects me more than I like. I try not to cuss…..too much. I am so far from a perfect human, and Lord knows I have no problem telling all y’all my shortcomings. So here I am, my 300th book has language in the title, shows a way you shouldn’t talk to your kids, and I HAD to tell you what the 300th book was. So, in an effort to have a little laugh at myself, I figured I’d write a little ditty, highlighting the books I read. (As a note, links to books I’ve read will be Amazon affiliate links – which just means we’ll get a small percentage of what you order.)

300 books read was the goal of this year,
I never knew there was reason to fear,
What could go wrong?
Reading is my heart’s song!

There were books that changed my life,
Books that made me a better wife.
My eyes were opened to the joy of children’s books,
Even if reading them got some funny looks.

There were books that made me laugh on a plane,
I read this great book by Shane
I’m thankful for the library’s great stock,
But the stacks of books, some might mock.

One made me weep with pride in my US of A
Did I throw it all away?
I didn’t expect, when the list was complete
A year of great books, and the 300th one was You Have To F@*#%&@ Eat

Books noted above, in order of linkage:
Dream Big, Think Small: Living an Extraordinary Life One Day at a Time
Great, Now We’ve Got Barbarians!
The Martian
Not So Different: What You Really Want to Ask About Having a Disability
Blue Sky White Stars
