About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2801 – Bret’s Current Ring Status

If you’ve followed the blog for a while, or if you’ve had conversations with us in person, you know Bret isn’t particularly good at holding on to wedding rings. As I scrolled through On This Day on Facebook, I discovered a very surprising thing…..Bret has been wearing the same ring set for more than HALF of our marriage! I can’t believe he hasn’t lost it yet! Way to go Bret! He says this ring set is so important to him because it used to be mine. I always give him a hard time and say, oh, so much more important than the one I PUT ON YOUR FINGER when I declared my commitment to you? But hey, it stuck.

Has your spouse lost any rings?

Day 2800 – What Jennilyn Forgot

Today I finished reading What Alice Forgot. It was a really well done novel. I loved how the story unfolded and how it was told. If you haven’t heard of it, this woman hits her head and finds out she can’t remember an entire decade of her life. In some ways it was a sad read as she’s in situations thinking “who am I now?” I also just finished Towers Falling, which is about children learning about September 11th. Let’s just say I’ve been thinking a LOT about my past over the last week.

One of my life “theme verses” is Ecclesiastes 5:20 – For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart. When I have conversations with people I’ve known for a long time and they talk about experiences, I tend to have forgotten them. Even a big breakdown I had a few days back, sobbing, tears streaming breakdown, and it’s a blip in my memory. I love this verse because it perfectly describes my life. I tend to forget the bad and remember the good.

I wonder what my 24 year old self would think of my life now.

We aren’t drinking anymore. My 24 year old self had just gotten a DUI 6 months prior, so I’m guessing she won’t be surprised by this. She’ll probably be surprised to find out she was an alcoholic.

We did get to marry Bret. I know my 24 year old self would be happy about that. My 34 year old self is still pretty pleased. πŸ™‚

She would surely be surprised we aren’t photographing weddings anymore. That was a dream for so long.

We did write a book! That will be happy news.

We don’t have kids, which I’m sure will be surprising.

We don’t have such a negative view of us.

It has been quite an interesting few days. What would be the biggest change your 10 years ago self would be surprised about?
